Wedding Hats for Mother of the Bride

Fiona Wells is from ‘Colour Me Beautiful’, Europe’s leading image consultants, and she has given us some sweetly simple tips to find the perfect wedding hat for you, whether you're mother of the bride, mother of the groom, or just a wedding guest...

Fiona says “whether you’re attending your best friend’s wedding or even off to Ladies Day at Royal Ascot, a hat or fascinator brings the perfect finishing touch to your outfit.”

Here are Fiona’s top wedding hat tips;

1 Remember height and scale. The rim of your hat should never extend beyond your shoulders. This is particularly important if you’re petite as you’ll look swamped in a large picture hat.

2 Compliment your face shape with your hat shape. If you have a rounded face look for styles with soft rounded crowns and brims, hats in loosely woven straw or soft fabrics are perfect. Hats with flatter crowns and straight brims in fine crisp straw are perfect for those with a square or rectangle face shape.

3 If you’re a mature woman a hat with a straight or upturned brim is ideal as it will help to lift your face. If you’re self conscious about a double chin or heavy jowls then avoid hats with a down turn brim as they will cast an unsightly shadow over your face, similarly they are to be avoided if you have a short neck.

4 If you’re going to be photographed wearing your hat then you need to be careful about wearing a black or dark coloured hat. You don’t want your picture to be spoiled by the appearance of unflattering dark shadows across your face.

A hat or fascinator brings the perfect finishing touch to your outfit

No matter how fabulous your hat it can’t really be considered an investment buy so if you’re going to splash out it pays to consider how much wear you’ll get out of it. It’s also worth remembering that the perfect hat will not only make you feel great but turns a plain outfit into something really special so occasionally it does pay to spend a little more and get something really different.

6 Matching your hat to your outfit always seems contrived and makes it appear as if you have limited imagination. Use your hat to make a statement by choosing one in a complementary or contrasting colour to your outfit, just make sure that the line of your hat complements your ensemble too.

7 Fascinating fascinators. These are great if you’re not sure about a hat. They might only be a frothy concoction of a few feathers attached to a hair comb but they’re the perfect way to dress up a pretty summer dress.
