hi Ive just recently found out Im pregnant for the third time and Im really worried about using my surgeries midwife.
My first midwife she was great really on the ball about any issue I had high blood pressure with the first and a difficult labour as I had a large baby, when I found out I was pregnant with my second child I carried on with her but then moved 20 miles away so changed to my local doctors surgery midwife she seemed OK at first but didn't do any off the checks the other midwife done she just done the blood pressure and urine sample and occasionally listened to the heart beat, my previous midwife sent her all my notes and even a note about my previous pregnancy.

Any way I was alot larger with this pregnancy and told the midwife I was concerned about the size of the baby to which she told me not to worry and that she thought the baby was 7-8lb which I thought was great news seeing as my son was 8 13oz, i was planning to have her in a birthing unit nearly an hour from the hospital, though when I was visiting my mum I went into labour 3 weeks early when I went into the ratcliffe hospital my blood pressure was up and during labour my daughter got stuck by her shoulders and panic ensued and I went out cold with the pain, was a natural childbirth with only gas and air my daughter came out not breathing she weighed 9 13 1/2 ozs and they told me that my midwife should have picked up on the size they looked at her notes cos I carry them everywhere, and they didn't look happy with her checks.
when i returned home i never saw the midwife again and went to the birthing unit who told me if I had her there they wouldn't off been able to do anything and would of had to send me to the nearest hospital so Im glad I went into labour when I did

I just don,t know what to do shes the only one based at the surgery Ive not even booked in with the doctor yet, do I change surgeries the doctors are really good Im around 8weeks now

    Firstly congrats

Book in with your doctor and explain your worries. There may be some sort of other arrangement he can make. Or where possible you could book in with an independant midwife though this tends to be quite costly depending on your area

I opted to use a midwife clinic at the hospital when i had my second for the same reason. My first was born disabled and the midwife should have picked up on it while i was pregnant so understandably i didnt want to go back. My doctor was very understanding and happily refered to a different one.

Go and see your doctor and like modmummy said they should be able to sort something out

congratulations madison_uk.. firstly on an antenatal if you are low risk you should only need your blood pressure and urine checking it is these two things that can point out conditions of hypertension or pre eclampsia, there isnt really anything else we can do routinely. but occasionally listened to the heart beat.. this is wrong.. your midwife should lisen in at every antenatal appointment .. with a doplar or a pinard .. (looks like a trumpet) ..

The only way as midwives we can tell if you are having a large baby is by measuring the growth of your abdomen done after or around 28 weeks every time your midwife sees you .. the problems with this is it is very subjective and midwives can measure very differently.. if you were measuring highly above the lines in your growth chart then your midwife should of referred you for an antenatal scan, although im my experience i have seen women induced for small weight and women going on to have 6 7 8 pounders...

There are other factors to have nearly a 10 pound baby at 37 weeks mite indicate that you had gestational diabetes and i would suggest that if there is a family history, or you have a high bmi you mite want to go for a GTT test (glucose tolerance test)..

But you can definitely change midwives not every woman is going to get on with there midwife and i would suggest you just changed surgeries if your happy to take the extra car journey... i'm not sure how much your GP can do as they really have little to do with pregnancy care... I would suggest seeing where you nearest gp surgery is from you and ringing them to book an appointment with the midwife there :D ...

ive seen a few women change due to them not getting on with there midwife.

    hope that helps!... xx

Congratulations! Definitely make sure you are with a midwife you can trust and are happy with, yu don't want any extra stress during pregnancy! My midwife was really good - I was huge with my daughter and she was very concerned about the size of her (her daddy was 10lb 8oz, so I was panicking!) She kept sending me for growth scans and consultant checks (I was measuring 47 weeks at 38 weeks pregnant!!!) However the consultants wouldn't give me a sweep or even consider inducing me - just told me that baby could get stuck and I'd need forceps!! They wanted me to go naturally. Fortunately, she wasn't the giant we thought she would be and arrived a day overdue weighing 9lb 3.5oz (I had polyhydramnios!) Good luck hun! xxx

the whole time I saw her she never measured my stomach let alone felt the position of the baby, have no diabetes in the family but my family usually has large babies could be down to genetics. I did ask her why she never measured and she just said that you don't have to and its not accurate anyway
she never asked me questions like my last midwife either like have you felt the baby move, have you got swollen ankles etc, was a quick in and out really, hopefully I can go to some proper midwives who take an interest and have a bit more trust in them.

great news been to see my doctor who was really great about the whole thing even spoke to midwife unit for me while i was there and i have just had a phone call from them with a new midwife whos seems very nice lets hope she is.
They have also said that if im worried at all to come in on a drop in to go over any concerns and have said not to worry as they will be keeping a better eye on the size of the baby this time round and that what happened last time should never of happened and apparently the midwife in question has since retired though i think pushed may be a better word for it lol.
So im all happy now so i can just concentrate on having a new addition to the family
