Information For Severndroog Castle

You can get married under an 18th-century decorated ceiling and enjoy amazing views out of the medieval-inspired windows into the woods.

Severndroog Castle is the perfect venue for couples looking for a small, intimate venue, where you can get married under an 18th-century domed ceiling and enjoy amazing views out of the medieval-inspired windows into natural woodland. A variety of hire options and catering packages are available, from drinks and canapés receptions to three-course meals or street food options in our outside space.

Hidden in the ancient Oxleas Woods in South East London, this secluded Castle feels very private and personal. On arrival, a path will lead you into the woods, you will turn the corner and the romantic fairy-tale Castle will be standing before you.

The Castle has two rooms, and with exclusive hire you can also use the Tearoom and courtyard space. The Lady James Room is lined with arched windows and retains its original 18th-century decorated ceiling which is dressed with a large brass candle chandelier. Romantic in atmosphere, it is licensed for weddings. The William James Room is more masculine, with a wooden beamed ceiling and windows looking out into the woods.

At the very top of the Castle is our Viewing Platform, which offers spectacular 360° views of London. Access to the Platform is included with all hires. After the ceremony you can capture the romance of Severndroog, known as the ‘castle in the woods’, by having a photoshoot on the viewing platform, the Lady James Room or outside amongst the trees. If you marry in Spring, you will have a carpet of bluebells in the woods as your backdrop.

The maximum occupancy of the building is 48 people spread across 3 floors; each individual floor holds 26 people seated or 38 standing. With a marquee in the courtyard, the number permitted on its grounds can be increased to 75 persons for a standing buffet. The maximum occupancy of 48 within the castle walls still applies. Please be aware that due to the many stairs in the Castle, access for people with poor mobility will be difficult.

About Us:
Severndroog is a tower built in the 18th century situated in the Oxleas Woods in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Built on Shooters Hill, one of the highest points in the city, the viewing platform boasts some of the most spectacular views in London. This Folly was restored in 2013 and preserved by the Severndroog Castle Preservation Trust. It is a community treasure hidden in ancient woodland with a rich history, which is upon request available as an intimate venue where people can celebrate together. Severndroog is a registered charity so your hire fee contributes to the maintenance of the building and keeping it open and accessible to the general public.

Historical Background:
Severndroog Castle is a folly built as a tribute to love by Lady Anne James to celebrate the maritime achievements of her late husband Sir William James. She filled the rooms with mementoes he had collected throughout his seafaring career. It is thought she brought guests here to entertain them and could see the tower she had built to her beloved husband from her home in Eltham. She named it after William’s most famous battle, the capturing of the island fortress of Suvarnadurg (Severndroog), which lies off the coast of Mumbai.

“Perfect Wedding Day! We recently had our wedding at Severndroog Castle. Our experience was top notch from start to finish. The wedding coordinator was helpful from the moment we decided to look round the venue, she was always prompt with her replies with any queries we had. The day itself was perfect. We had exclusive hire and the team were so helpful on the day, they all worked so hard to make sure everything ran smoothly, even helping my now husband to fill popcorn boxes for our guests! We highly recommend the beautiful castle for weddings, it is like something from a fairytale!” - Chloe and J

“Forget the Eye or the Shard, you just have to climb to the top of Severndroog Castle for the best views in London”
