Hi i'm thinking of having a winter wedding in January or February, i'm really keen on the idea but my future farther in -law keeps going on about the weather and people not being able to get there. Which is annoying me a little lol an putting doubts in my head. Has any one else ever done a winter wedding? or had a wedding when the weather has been really rubbish?
Please help!

Personally I love the idea of a winter wedding, but I can't have one due to work etc.
But the weather is never predictable, no matter what time of year you have it, it could be like this winter, here we've had no snow what so ever, so wouldn't have been a problem with travel.
Personally I think, if thats what you want then go for it. You can't control the weather, and you can't control who turns up. I've known a few people who had a winter wedding last december (when it was really bad snow nearly everywhere) and not only did they get the most amazing pictures, but also if people wanted to get there! they got there! that way you'll only have the people who REALLY want to join you on your big day there :) x

feel like a ranted on a bit there, and lost my point in what I was trying to say so in short
I say go for it :) x

My sister got married 30/12/2012.... it wasnt great weather to say the least but how much time will you actualy be spending outside.
some venues ... (like where my sister got married) clear the roads for guests going up to the venue etc. but whether it be your wedding or somewhere else they are going to have to travel in the conditions regardless.
if you want a winter wedding then go for it... the pictures will be beautifull if it happens to snow as they will be if it doesnt :-) xx

hi laura, i just got married 29th dec and we didnt have any snow but it pored down with rain however we had the best day ever and still had the xmas decorations up in the venue which looked lovely, you cant control the weather at any time of the year if its what you want go for it i wouldnt have changed the date if i could do it all again xx
Thank you for all your comments. Every one i've spoken so far as has said the same, so I think we will be going for a winter wedding :) xx
what colour themes did you go with sparkle as everyone usually has red but red really doesn't suit me lol we we're thinking of blue xx
CommentAuthorEcoFreak
We were going to have a winter wedding - our colours were royal blue & silver :)
If you want a winter wedding have one! You'll only regret it if it snows on your date but you'd rescheduled :) Xx

Laura I think you should go for it. I'm from Ireland, and everyone bangs on about not getting married in Winter because of the weather, when they really should have realised by now that in Ireland you're just as likely to get hail in June and glorious sunshine in January. And anyway, all they have to do is get from their car or whatever into a venue of some type. At least in Winter people will be prepared and you won't have a Summer wedding with unexpected downpour where every woman there is hobbling around in little sandals with her feet soaked through! ;) As regards colours, H2b's cousin got married New Year's Eve 2010 and they had a rich emerald green for the men's ties and the BM dresses etc, and pink rose bouquets with lots of greenery. Not typically Christmassy or anything but worked really well, nice rich colours.

The one thing you can never control is the weather! My friend got married the 21st June and it was a monsoon! So bad the roads were flash flooding and guests were massively delayed. I love winter weddings, so romantic with jewel colours such as midnight blue, deep red etc that feel a little out of place the rest of the year for me

I think a winter wedding is magical - I was a winter bride until we decided to go abroad but it will be in January!
I say go for it

Thank you everyone.. my h2b have spoken about it and he definitely wants the winter wedding too, i was thinking along the lines of royal blue as we are both massive football supports h2b Chelsea and me Birmingham so its very fitting. Tho I can def see me an the in laws falling out before the wedding, as they are very opinionated about every thing grr
I'm just looking forward to the planning and the big day :) xx

Im having a winter wedding too! We are going to keep the ceremony and reception local to us in case there is a problem with travelling! I think it will be amazing with all the lights still up from christmas etc and we will prob go for a deep blue too with silver :) just make sure the venue has plenty of places for lovely photos in case ou cant get them taken outside xx

h2b proposed at christmas and I said I'd love to get married around christmas time as that my favourite time of year. December is a busy tme of the month for us at work and the venues we originally saw were stipulating such high numbers so we've opted for last weekend of November. So we get to kickstart the christmas celebrations for everyone lol Our colour scheme isn't christmasy at all though - it's coffee/chocolate and cream/ivory. May end up getting baubles in those colours yet lol With regards to weather. You're not safe any time of te year . Our venue isn't too far off a main rod that will be well gritted and the road to the venue will be gritted by them so we should be ok. x

Hi, I'm getting married in March 2013 which is usually still pretty cold. I figured you're inside 99% o the time, what does it matter? Plus, venues are SO much cheaper when you book 'out of season' :) x

Tilly the difference is that they are all decked out for snow. They know how to handle it. If you have heavy snowfall here the country stands still.
Anastasia mentioned in another thread that a friend of hers lost everything - the venue couldn't open on the wedding day due to snow and they didn't have insurance. So they lost a hell of a lot of money and eventually split up because they couldn't handle it.
Bit of a gloomy story - my point is: if you do it then make sure you have insurance and these things covered. If there's heavy snow fall people can't do much.
I would have loved a winter wedding - a christmas wedding. In the snow. But we ruled it out for mentioned and other reasons too.

I love winter weddings. We were tempted to go for a winter date ourselves. I even had a dream about a room decorated with natural branches with tons of icy blue and silver glittery baubles hanging everywhere. It looked beautiful in my dream, lol!
With regards to the weather, British weather is unpredictable at the best of times. A wintery day with clear blue skies or even snow would look amazing. The only thing is that it does get dark very quickly and the venue we are thinking of booking has a lovely wooded area, it will look beautiful in late spring but does currently look a little dead! x

What people do not consider when having a winter wedding is the venue! It's ok saying if it snows it doesn't matter aslong as the guests can still get there. When you book a venue it has staff & this was the problem for the lady I knew, no staff turned up because of the heavy snow so they could not open. Guests will struggle to come because they want to share your special day, staff would rather stay in bed!!
Apart from this, I love winter weddings x

We made sure we booked a venue that was really easy to get to on a main road. It's just off the motorway and shouldn't be too effected by snow. Also all of our family live in Bristol so we don't have anyone travelling far. I also made sure I got decent insurance!
CommentAuthorMrsDanks
I say go for it but do make sure you get wedding insurance just in case, it will be all lovely and magical. Because its not wedding season you may get lovely discounts on everything (fingers crossed). @ landy88 - I love the fact your sister got married in the future lol. xx

Honey you cant predict the weather at any time of the year... it seems to rain all through the summer and then last year we had a heat wave in October, random !! You can have some really nice bright days in January/February whereas July can be horrible so whenever is pot luck really !!
Finally marrying the love of my life !!

But rain or a heatwave will never prompt a venue to close down. Snow may do.

My photographer was saying that he's thinking about stopping winter weddings as the light isn't great for outside pictures (and he loves a landscaped shot!) and there's always so many issues with weather etc. Worth bearing in mind.

I would have loved a winter wedding. I love wintery things!! We couldn't have planned in time for this winter and were to impatient to wait for the next. Go for it. Just check with the venue about snow fall. If it snowed at my venue we'd struggle to get in as it's down a slope and not near a main road. Some other places would be easier x
Here comes the bride......

We're getting married on 12/12/12, and I'm really excited about having a winter wedding, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit worried about the weather, especially as we are traveling 2 hours to Gretna Green, Scotland for the wedding, we have booked our 14 guests and ourselves into a hotel right near Gretna for the day before and the day after the wedding. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it's ok, and we don't get snowed out of the place, don't mind getting snowed in LOL

I guess it depends on the photographer and what you want. We made sure our venue had some great indoor features so if it's too dark or the weather is bad and we can't go outside we can have lovely pictures taken inside. I know that snow is the only weather (bar flooding) that has the potential to close venues in this country but I'm willing to take that risk. There are so many venues going bust at the moment that risk is always on the cards. We rarely get terribly bad snow, especially down here in Bristol. As I said, just make sure you get good insurance - NOT the cheapest insurance. Check all the T's & C's and make sure they cover weather issues. I guess you just have to weigh up if the risk is worth it to you. To us it was.
CommentAuthorLittleMissBossy
There can be good pics taken inside - but the best photographer in the world takes better pics in daylight. Indoor photography is different and often difficult - pics using a flash are just awful. So he/she'd need to bring a lot of light equipment to achieve a still natural look.
Still doesn't need to be a no no but it depends on your priorities how important pics are to you.

CommentAuthorCraftyKirsty
Exactly. Maybe think hard or write a list of your priorities on the day and then way up your options from there. Luckily the photographer we picked had already done a winter wedding at the same venue and the photos were lovely. But then you never now how it will go on the day. Think hard about what matters most to you.

I'm having a winter wedding - december 22nd.
When we first got engaged we said we would love a winter wedding and were going to look into it, everyone was really negative! Saying things like, oh its too close to christmas we've got enough to do and why, its cold. Its a romantic idea but it wouldnt work in reality. It really annoyed us so we done it anyway!! Stuff everyone else. lol
CommentAuthorKATG
have a winter wedding if you want, but make sure you have insurance incase your venue closes down, or your celebrant cant get there. I think the argument of things being accessible in the snow may depend a little bit on where your venue i. Typically (i know not always but definitely typically) the south have less severe snow than the north. I considered a winter wedding but when we discussed it with the venue his eyes went so wide and he said that cancelled 3 last year because it wasnt sage to get over the forth road bridge and people couldnt get there - but then that's scotland x

I'm getting married 12/12/12 and I can't wait. I've been to a few weddings and as a 2nd time bride u cannot guarantee the weather anytime of the year. My last wedding was in the October and it rained all day. Summer weddings can also have rain. But I've noticed tht with the winter we av more chance of sunshine and frost than rain. I'm sure whenever you book it for, it will be lovely regardless of the weather x
