last week when i went to my venue, the manageress suggested something that we are going along with. rather than putting 1 red and 1 white on the tables....and risking throwing away unused half bottles , we are having the waitresses go round and asking what they prefer.....red or white. they will open just as many as is required, which is usually considerably less that opening bottles and leaving them to pour their own. people can get greedy or wasteful when its free, so if it is poured for them they are more likely to just drink what they choose when asked.

We're giving a choice of red, white or rose. I don't know many people who drink rose, so personally, I wouldn't choose it if you can offer only one choice; white would be my suggestion. I know a lot of wine drinkers, and every single wine drinker I know will drink white, about 70-80% will drink red, and only maybe 30% rose.

Obv I don't know your guests, so I'm just going on people I know.

Could another option be to include a tick box on your RSVPs? We're doing this on ours, so we know roughly how many bottles of each to put out. Either that, or if it's being served, simply get the waiter/waitress to ask people their preference and serve it accordingly.

But yeah, I personally would not go with rose if I could only offer one; I'd go with white, as it's the safest bet. And I'd go with a medium-dry white; don't go too dry or too sweet

thanks for all the advice girls. I think the question on the rsvp is a great idea so i know how many to buy as dont want to be left with loads as i dont drink it and dont want too little as the bar wont open till about 6pm and the meal will start at about 2-2.30 ish so need to keep all the guest watered! lol

I think having a tick box is a great idea. Personally, I like sweet rose so that'd be my choice but I know your average wine drinker prefers a more medium or dry wine... wouldnt be for me but found a lovely compromise at our venue when we were last there x

I know quite a few people that ONLY drink red, and the same for white and rose. I personally wouldn't risk only rose...

Thanks for all the advice girlies. No point going for the getting the waitresses to pour as I am getting the wine elsewhere and if i get my caterers to pour i think it costs extra. there is no corkage fee so once the bottles are paid for theres no going back i guess. I might buy them quite early bit by bit so i dont notice the cost. My inlaws have already offered to do a france trip and supply the wine for us which is lovely of them.
I'm definitely going to go with the tick box on rsvp though so i know what to get.

Do you know what... my sister got married in August 2009 and had a big garden reception, she bought lots of wine, had a couple of barrels of beer and champagne for toasting as well as plenty of fresh juice. Me and h2b were the only guests to touch the wine.... out of 40 guests. We were hammered LOL... but yeh anyway my point is - don't go overboard and be out of pocket, if you want to put a bottle of pink on a table then that's fine, it's free and it's what you want!!
