Sometimes it depends on how much notice your venur wants for the final numbers. Probably about 3-4 months.

We sent ours in January 2014 for an August 2014 wedding, but we hadn't done save the dates and were aware that people might be booking summer holidays. I would still probably do them sooner rather than later, as we found that a lot of people were very slow to RSVP.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.
We sent ours mid-late March with an RSVP deadline of 1st May for our 2nd August wedding. We had a second batch with a deadline of June 15th so we could 'bump up' day guests if we got any declines. We didn't have to get numbers to our venue until 2 weeks before, but I had draw up the table plan and collate all the options in a spreadsheet so that the venue knew how many of each dish they were doing, who was having what, and where it was going. I also wanted to allow time to make the seating plans. So basically it depends on a number of factors but realistically I'd get them out at least 3-4 months before, with an RSVP deadline of at least a month before to allow you to chase people/get numbers to your venue.

We're getting married in April 2016, so are sending out save the dates with this years Christmas cards to save a bit on postage!! Our date is a Friday so we wanted to give people lots of notice to get time off and will probably do invites 6 months before because of this. X

Ours should have been sent over a month ago. We factored in when our wedding is etc. For most ours is at the end of the holiday year and on a Friday so people would need notice to hold a holiday back. We also have an invitation to send to Australia, which I wanted to send with our Christmas cards that we send over there.....however ours have been delayed and we still don't have them and the deadline for getting them to Aus for Christmas was Friday. I think anything from 3-6 months is ideal, especially for daytime guests
