My mum and dad had a small wedding at their local chuch, and they had a small get-together with family afterwards. my mum paid £30 for her dress, she looks stunning in the pics i've seen. that was almost 30 years ago and still going strong. If my marriage can even be half as happy as my mum and dad's, i'll be a very lucky lady! xxx

My parents decided to get married because they really wanted a party and wanted their parents to pay.

They had a civil ceremony with their immediate families and two of my mum's friends (who snuck in). My dad wore a kilt suit and my uncle was his best man. My mum wore an antique Edwardian lace dress and my two female cousins were her bridesmaids in sailor dresses.

After the ceremony they had an enormous party at Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms with a friend DJing and more friends providing the catering. They also had clowns and jugglers and stilt walkers. They played their families off against each other in order to get more and more champagne... I think they were still drinking it for years.

So all in all they had a pretty offbeat wedding. It was a big wedding and while it would be a minute budget today after inflation, they didn't exactly scrimp on everything.

My mum and dad have been married 51 years!!! My dad is not Catholic but theirs was the first full mass wedding at mums local Cathoilc church. Mum had the most amazing princess dress with deep red roses. They had a traditional wedding breakfast at a big posh hotel that has been knocked down now, then everyone went to the train station to wave them off for their honeymoon in Blackpool. Mum wore a beautiful going away outfit with a hat and the pink spot lining of her coat matched her suit. They have fab photos of them leaning out of the train waving down the platform just like out of one of those old movies. They looked fab!
They are currently in their mid 70s and bicker like kids! ha ha ha

My uncle was due to move to Canada and sold his house to my parents, they had 6 weeks before he went to Canada and they moved in - my mother refused to move in with my Dad before they were married. They had a beautiful white Wedding at Mums parish church followed by a lovely buffet at the pub - this was 34 years ago when they were 20 and 21. Funny thing is this is also the church where Rich's sister was married and we live right next door to said pub and church :)

Oooh re reading some posts it reminds me - Mum bought her stunning dress new it cost about the same as what im paying today for mine - it was the most expensive thing for the whole day. Then my Dads younger sister wore it on her big day and my Dads Sister in Law's sister wore it to her wedding - so My Dads sister in law went to 3 weddings were the bride wore the same dress lol

My mum and dad got married 4 weeks after getting engaged! My mum's from Sweden and during the 80s the EU working laws were different to today apparently, so it was hard for her to get work in the UK without being married etc. That sounds really dodgy, but they'd been together for a few years by that point (my dad used to travel back and forth to Sweden every other weekend just to see her!) and they knew they were planning to get married eventually, but decided not to wait and just did it! They had their parents and a few friends (about 10 people max) present, my mum wore a blue dress, it was the middle of February, it snowed, the pipes in their house froze...! Oh and the best part of this story is my mum went into the florists the morning of her wedding and asked if they could make up a small bouquet of flowers because she was getting married that afternoon - the florist almost had a heart attack! They only have about four photos of their wedding day, taken on a normal camera. But they've been married for 25 years now :-) Bless 'em!

My mum got married at a registry office in a green suit and is like your mum Becky wishes she had a dress like me. My Dad was in an ordinary suit and then he got a lift home in the back of his mates van and slept on the sofa as my mum had my brother (2 then) in their room lol. But there have been married for 25 years now...

i think that may be why my mum is very involved with my wedding and is loving the planning as it is a bit like the wedding she never had..xx

My mum and dad got married 25 years ago and both tell different stories about it. Both agree it happened in a registry office and that my mum was pregnant with me at the time but I have never seen any pictures although I have helped organise all our old fam photos. Never thought about it until now and never asked but there probably aren't any photos. Might explain a bit about their reaction to our wedding

My parents are both Catholic and got married in the local church - and had my cousins as bm's (they were 7,9 and 11 at the time). They were allowed to choose their favourite colour dress and each wore knee length dress (one in blue, one in lemon and one in pink). From what I've been told it was very traditional - and they celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary yesterday!!

my mum and dad got married as she was 7 months pregnant with me and my dad's mum wanted them to get married.

they got married in a registry office and mum mum had a big dress which covered her bump and then a reception at home in the garden with about 20 guests. small and intimate! my mum still has her dress and actually wore it last year as a fancy dress party as it still fits her 23 years later! xx

my mum and dad got married when they were 5 months pregnant with me. They got married in the church me and h2b are getting married. They had a pretty expensive one but only because my nan and grandad payed. My mum didnt want to marry my dad but nan n grandad said she had too. she went on to have two more kids with him, he had numerous affairs and she finally left and divorced him when my brother was 7. lol

but they are both happy. my dad has remarried although he has still had affairs (a.s.shole) and i think my dad put my mum off men for life, although i do hope she will find someone and settle down with them x

awwww what a cute thread... me likey...

my mum and dad got married nearly 25 yrs ago (they celebrate it this dec 23rd) i was a bridesmaid in apricot and shinny white shoes....

they had been together exactly 3 mths before they married!!.... it was a simple day... they married in the church that they got for free because my dad was head of sports at the school so they married in the school chapel, they walked out of the church under and arch of hocky sticks that the kids at the school had arranged in secret (my dad used to play england aand gb hockey) and there reception was in the school conferance room and the school catered it

so it cost my parents a whopping £50 quid for the notice of marriage

the dress was made by my nan and so was my dress... the pictures are so beautiful ... and very happy memories...

they could have spent more but they didnt see the need....

when i think how much we have already spent on our wedding and how much is left to pay and what we could have bought with that money instead... i keep thinking omg am i being silly i could by a house!! But at the end of the day its not how much money you throw at a wedding or where you get married, or how you have the wedding... it will never be to everyones taste ... and at the end of the day as long as your happy and love your h2b you could wear a bin bag and still feel the luckiest lady alive... and it just goes to show you dont have to spend tonnes to have a life time of happy memories... and thats all that counts ... is marrying the right guy that makes you feel special

My mum and dad have been married 29 years (celebrated this 20th march) and they we're both 20 and had been dating since they were 15, they had a lovely church wedding and when my mum took her dress to the dry cleaners 3 weeks before their wedding day the bloomin shop had burned it so my mum was well upset and couldn't find another dress but 2 weeks before they got married my mum won £1000 on a scratch card which helped buy my mum buy a new dress, pay for cars and a 2 week honeymoon in benidorm :) xx (pics in album called family) xx

My parents got married on Christmas Eve (family tradition I am breaking!) in a tiny little church on top of a hill next to a loch. There was LOADS of snow, and my Grandad who had had a few too many already needed pushed up the hill! My Mum had a white dress, with a full length coat with fur around the hood, and a big white furry muff. She later made the coat into my christening gown.
That was 37 years ago. Sadly the split up in Sept 2009. boo.

I don't know my real father but my mother married my step-father in August 2006, I can't remember how long they had been together but it was less than 2 years.

They had the ceremony at a hotel with a 16 year old me, my 14 and 11 year old sisters, our 8 year old cousin as bridesmaids, my mum's best friend as MOH and her 2 year old daughter as flower girl and our other cousins as pageboys. The reception was at a members only restaurant nearby!

It was quite an expensive day, their rings alone cost £6000 and my mum's outfit around half of that... they went on honeymoon in Spain, ended up moving there four months later! They are now getting divorced, they separated in December 2009.
