I think i'm being paranoid.. but how much cover do i really need?

i've found some with £1000 cancelation cover, which would be enough for us to rebook

then there is £500 baggage cover which is ample

£10,000,000 medical expences which is plenty i think!

and something to do with going bust covered too.

this is for about £33, half the price thomas cook want to charge me haha.

would have been a tenner cheaper but hubby has asthma and we cant risk not putting it on because even though he hasnt had an attack for years, we dont want to risk him not being covered if god-forbid he does.

what are the views on cover?

    xx

I know what you mean about declaring illnesses. I had to go with PINK insurance because I had breast cancer......and I needed a cover that would cover for return of cancer that would mean cancellation of the holiday. it cost me £120 for both of us for 2 weeks in USA

    ouch £120 is a lot!

Its coming up £33ish for insurance via comparethemarket, and then about £12 via quidco, but quidco haven't asked about illnesses yet so will shoot up. plus i don't get a cuddly toy from them :p

thomas cook quoted us £68 for us both, but again, didn't take into account his asthma

Never buy insurance from a travel agent, they're insanely pricey! Price comparison sites are the best and definitely declare medical conditions.

If you think you may take a couple of trips a year then get an annual worldwide multitrip as it works out much cheaper.

That seems pretty good to me. This time last year I had 4 medical conditions I had to declare and I actually couldn't fina anyone to insure me as we were going to the USA. I got discharged from a consultant which took the decleration down to 3 and then my GP said I didn't need another follow-up which meant I only had to declare my allergy to bee and wasp stings and my RA. Meant for the first time in my lift i could get 'normal' insurance and not through a specialist company! i was over the moon with a £50 policy LOL! I used to have to pay £120 odd quid for a single Euro trip!

I have an annual policy, which costs me £50 for worldwide cover, and covers my endo and asthma (my asthma bumped it up a whopping £20, grr!)

£33 is good if it covers both of you, and covers your partner's asthma.

Couple things I would look at would be the cover for documents (eg passports) and cash, as some are seriously stingy. I would also consider getting something with more baggage cover; we travel with thousands of pounds worth of stuff, and £500 would never be enough for us personally. Also check out the single item cover, as some have pretty poor limits. That all said, do also check your home insurance, as some items may be insured abroad, in which case, a higher level of cover isn't needed so much.

I'd also look at the excesses, as sometimes cheaper policies can have larger ones, and for a few £ extra you might get lower excesses.

Finally, always check the small print, and be aware of what is and isn't covered eg check out what sports and activities are covered if you plan on doing any (things like scuba diving can be extra, as can motorised sports), what you need to do should anything get lost or stolen (most stipulate that all valuables must go in hand luggage and be stored in the safe, and that in the case of theft, a police report must be made and a reference number obtained, often with 24-48 hours of the theft), and if medical treatment is excluded if you don't get recommended jabs or take recommended medications.

    Thanks barbie :)

The excess's on the one we looked at is only £50 for each section :) We won't be travelling with more than £500 stuff each so is plenty for us.

Single item cover is £150 each item, again, nothing other than my phone which I will check with the house insurance as that is named on there on its own.

Do you cover with your bank? I get it through Barclays as a perk of being their customer and my H2B does too with Halifax which we didnt know about.
