We had an enquiry yesterday from one of our customers who had bought a Tanzanite Engagement Ring from a jeweller while on holiday in America. Unfortunately the stone has cracked and is now loose in the setting. Our customer wanted to know if we could fix it for her.

This is a common problem with Tanzanite as it is relatively soft and, because of its structure, it is prone to cracking, or cleaving as jewellers call it. Most tazanite is used in earings or necklaces as it is less likely to become damaged in these items.

Tanzanite is beautiful and depending on the angle you look at it can appear lilac, purple or blue. It is also extremely rare and is only found on one mountain in Tanzania. It was first discovered by a prospector in 1967 and eventually found its way onto the market in the mid 70's.

Unfortunately it is not possible to repair the customers ring so she has asked us to use a diamond instead.

So please be careful when considering Tanzanite - it is very beautiful but can be quite fragile compared with other gemstones.

I do have several jewellery pieces including a ring that i hardly ever wear for this very reason, which is a shame as it is BEAUTIFUL!

Hi Madison. I'm sorry I made you sad but please don't worry too much - if you take care of it, it will be fine. Its just that they are not as tough as some other gemstones. Our customer was just unlucky.
However they are amazing the way they change colour and reflect the light. They are also EXTREMELY rare. It may be fragile but its still beautiful!
