Do any of you know whether you need to get permission to print the words of hymns in your order of service?? I went looking for lyrics for ours earlier and there were references to getting copyright permission etc. Have to say I never thought of it!

If the writer died more than seventy years ago, it doesn't matter...I think for a lot of hymns the church owns the copywrite...here's an extract from the ccli website which is involved in copywriting religious music:
Copyright Licences & Wedding Services This page is intended to provide guidance about which licences might be required, either by the church or the wedding couple, for wedding services that take place in churches.
Church Copyright Licence (CCL) This permits the words of authorised* hymns and worship songs to be included in the printed wedding orders of service. Don’t forget that your CCL licence number must be included somewhere in the order of service, together with the copyright details of each song reproduced. You must also remember to include details of these songs in your annual Copy Report.
*An authorised hymn or worship song means one which is included in the CCLI licence schemes.
PPL Church Licence
This licence is not required for wedding services. It covers the public performance of sound recordings during church activities, but is not required for acts of worship/weddings/funerals.
PRS for Music Church Licence
This licence is not required for wedding services. It covers the public performance of live music and sound recordings during church activities, but is not required for acts of worship/weddings/funerals.
Video/Audio Recording A Wedding If a wedding couple asks to have the service recorded by a videographer, family friend, or even Aunt Sally with her mobile phone, a licence will be required if the recording is to include music.
The videographer or wedding couple will need a Limited Manufacture Licence (LML) from the PRS for Music website. This licence covers both recording live music and over-dubbing previously recorded music.
Permission is also required from all participants in the service (musicians, readers etc.) if their service is to be recorded.
Professional videographers will be aware of the licensing requirements but, nevertheless, CCLI suggests that churches advise wedding couples to ensure they have discussed copyright issues with their videographer or the person making the audio recording.

We didn't need any permissions to reprint the lyrics for any of the hymns in our OOS for our church wedding xxx

Hi, I was looking into this just last week and found the CofE website has some info about it. There is a list of popular hymns on there where you can read the lyrics and listen to the hymn, at the bottom of the lyrics it says whether copyrights apply or not. I will pop a link to the hymn list on your wall x
