Hi guys i was wondering if you can help me. i got engaged last month (Yay!) after 6 years together. we really wanted to go away to celebrate but cant afford to as were both students so have decided to host an engagement party instead. its only a village hall that were doing food ourselves and disco and deposit already paid and a couple of invites already sent. brilliant! my dilemma is, it is on my grandads 65th birthday (which i knew, but only time we could do it) and when seeing him yesterday he suggested we have a joint birthday/engagement party. now what i want to know is, is it really selfish of me to want to have my own time as this is man who NEVER has parties for his birthday and i only get engaged once! i should add i'm looking to have a long engagement due to funds so i just wanted to enjoy this for us :( any help/suggestions would be great, thankyou in advance.

Personally I didn't have an engagement party because OH and I wanted to use that money towards the wedding as well as the fact our families are scattered with none living closer than 30miles away.

I would do something on the evening to acknowledge his birthday... I mean, he's only 65 once right and he is your Grandad? It doesn't take anything away from your engagement party to bring out a Birthday cake for him and sing him a Happy Birthday song.

well what we were gonna do is take him out for a meal in the day time and keep the evening for us. if i thought he was bothered i would never have booked on his birthday, just don't know how to approach the subject without looking selfish i guess :/

I think its cute that he suggested it. My grandparents have now all passed away and will not be there to celebrate with me on the day and if I had had an engagement party on their birthday I wouldnt have minded but thats just me - how many people would be there for him that wouldnt have been coming to your do? It is my H2B grandads birthday on our wedding day but we are embracing it and have had a cake made as a surprise and I am going to present it and get everyone to sing during the speeches, that way we still have our day and he feels a bit special.

well everyone is hopefully coming to the party, but i think they would go to a meal to, my granddad lives in london n were in the midlands so when he comes its usually for a week or two. i know what your saying,i guess i just wanted it to be a night for me n my OH and his family are gonna want to come to party for him not for also my granddad who they've never met yet. i dont know what to do,as i still would obviously acknowledge his bday in the day by having a meal, exchanging gifts etc so i dunno.

Why do you have to have it specifically on that date?
