Congratulations firstly....enjoy being engaged for a bit too.

It depends on a lot of things such as,
Money - do you need to save up
Venue - some get booked up 2 years in advance
Do you have a special date in mind?

We been engaged a year tomorrow and get married in August so just over 18 months planning and been fun, glad we didn't rush it but equally glad it wasn't too long xxx

I don't think there is a set rule - we got engaged Dec 12 and have set our date for Dec 14 so 2 years. This is due to financial reasons (dates we can sell shares) and personal reasons (always wanted an Xmas wedding). Happy planning and conratulations.

there isnt a set rule! more importantly enjoy being engaged!!
secondly, like millz has said it depends on a lot of different things!!

we were engaged 9 months before all my family found out due to some personal issues, and didnt set a date until May last year...and getting married May this year... so officially actually engaged for 22 months!! and planning for 12!!!

We got engaged at the end of 2010 and will be getting married this June - 2 and half years was enough time to save and take our time planning. It's really up to you at the end of day! Enjoy being engaged for a bit and start doing some research into venues etc and go from there.

We didn't start planning for 2yr 9 months because we were long distance. As soon as he moved in we started looking at venues and set the date for 10 months later.

As you can tell, everyone here has a different experience. The important thing is what works best for you two, not what's 'normal'

So enjoy being engaged, chat about what type of wedding you both want etc, have some fun researching stuff on the internet. Before you know it you'll have a feeling of how long you'd like (or need due to saving) to plan it.

I got engaged just over 2 years ago and have just over a year and a half until we marry, but we booked the church and reception venue with 2 years and 4 months before the wedding date and I have been planning since then, so its completely up to you xxx

too long?! bloody hell haha, we got engaged in april last year and we're only just getting round to setting a date, argh, and then it will be another 2 years off! well, just short of two years, afew of our friends have got engaged and got the weddigns planned within a year, others have taken alot longer. its just down to circumstance and what you want really, so unless people are willing to cough up to bring it forward, take as long as you need!

    Congratulations!!
I think everyone's pretty much covered it - there's no one size fits all when it comes to wedding planning! We're getting married in September and will have been engaged for a few months over three years by that point. I think saving up is a big part of it - you really don't want to be stressing too much over money - a little bit of stress is unavoidable! H2b's aunt got married a week or so ago and had only been engaged for about four or five months and her wedding had everything you could ever want, so it can be done in shorter amounts of time too!
I think you and your h2b should sit down, have a chat about what sort of day you want, whether there's a special location or date, etc, as others have said. As you discuss what you want you'll probably get a better idea of how much time you need to get there.

But also, as others have said, enjoy being engaged!!!!

Our wedding date is 1/11/15 which will mean we had a 5 year engagement!
There are no set rules! (my first wedding was all done in 10 months so less is possiable)

If you want 12 months then have 12 months if you want more have more and if you want less then again thats up to you!
The only things you need to consider is what you can afford and what suppliers you want to use, the longer you have the more chance your suppliers will be available as lots of things like venue and photographer can get booked up to 2 and even 3 years in advance.
So work out what you want and your budget and go from there

Oh and congratulations and welcome to the site

It depends on different circumstances as I'm a teacher we decided on a summer wedding and 7 months wouldn't have allowed us our venue so we've settled on an 18 month engagement just means I need to pace myself more rather than get too excited too early!! X

We got engaged last January and were originally planning on getting married 26 months later but after 3 months and a few changes to work commitments it got pulled forward to this year!

Like the others have already said it depends on lots of things - cash, date, availability, etc
But most importantly that you get the day you both want!

It will all fall in to place once you start throwing some ideas around :) x

    Congrats and welcome!

We got engaged and started planning pretty much straight away....when we get married we will have been engaged a little under two years.

From a personal point of view I'm glad we have a longer wait as I think I would have found it quite stressful to do in six months or something and I wouldnt have enjoyed the planning so much, however everybody is different.

We got engaged in April 2012 and we are Getting Married July 2013. We started planning straight away but we need to wait so we and parents could save up and we wanted a Saturday in the Summer which the venue we wanted is quite popular.

I would def recommend leaving it longer than 12 months to plan, as we have had no stresses (so far) and we have taken our time finding suppliers plus you get your pick of who you want the longer you leave it esp if it is in summer.

    Good luck

I have been engaged since 2008 but i have changed the date a few times, before i settled on the date that i have now.
People that i have spoke to usually says around 18 months before your date, is enough to plan the wedding, but then it depends if you have the money or not. As sometimes you have to book in advance as places get booked up.

    Met: 1st February 2014
    Engaged: 1st June 2014

There isn't a time limit, it's completely up to you.
We will have been engaged for 18 months when we get married. We thought 18 months would be a fair emount of time to plan and save up. Also, we both wanted a summer wedding and we got engaged in december so it worked out pretty well for us.
It depends on a lot of things - time of year you want to get married, if you have a specific date in mind, if you need time to save up, if you're chosen venue will be already booked etc

I got engaged in July 2012 and getting married Aug 2013. Didnt really start planning a majority of it until Sept 2012 so really less than 12 months in the making. I have managed to book everything I wanted no problems and so think it is easily done in a short time if you were in a rush..... Although I am having a Friday wedding which helps.... I remember visiting the car man 1 year to the day before the wedding and he had 7 cars, if we had the wedding on the day after we had planned (which was a Sat), all his cars were actually booked already....

    Congrats!

I got engaged in April and I'm getting married in March. I could have planned it in less time really if necessary but it's been nice to plan things at a leisurely pace and enjoy every minute of it. I agree with others, depends if you have to save up and when you can book your venue. I'd say more than a year isn't really needed unless your venue is super busy! x
