Hi. All along I've said I would like to go to Liverpool for my hen night and everyone was up for it. But now that its time to arrange it all alot of people are saying thy dont know if they can afford it as they have to pay for something to wear for our wedding then accommodation at the hotel. I feel really bad so I've said ill just go local but my best friend said yesterday we booked the wedding in September 2013 for October 2014 so people have had enough time. It's probs goin to cost everyone about £150 in total. But is it selfish To ask people to pay to come away for a night? I just feel like if I do it local i could do that anytime and it won't feel special.

Like Lala said they don't have to buy something new for the wedding, I've reused the same 2 outfits for the last 3 weddings ive attended an reusing on agsin for upcoming one in going to.

Is there any other ways you could reduce cost? Cheaper hotel, fitting more people in per room? On a sofa bed or sleepeze?

I know alot of my hens won't be able to go on my chosen Cardif hen, so im having 2 one to cardif with my main hens Moh, bf, and few close others. And then having s bigger hen with everyone invited to a more local venue x

£150 is quite a lot; can you not find anything cheaper? Travel and accommodation are the main costs, so maybe find a cheaper hotel, or look into going somewhere closer to home if travel is bumping it up? Also keep costs down on the night eg look at getting a Taste Card trial, and find somewhere that will take it, as that can save on food and drink, or, just go somewhere cheap and cheerful to eat. Similarly, don't go to a really expensive club or get a VIP package. That way, people can keep costs down by not drinking as much.

Failing that, I second Becky's idea of having 2: 1 in Liverpool for those who can afford it, and then 1 in your local town for those who can't. I'm doing something similar for mine; 3 nights away with my 4 bridesmaids and my mum in February, followed by a cheap and cheerful night out on the town the week before the wedding with a bigger group.

Nowadays Hen Do's and Stag Do's have become bigger affairs than they ever used to be. It used to be a night out in the brides home town for a hen do and the night before the wedding. Now they have become something a lot more than that and some people are against it.
dont get me wrong, I want a hen do away and have booked a large house in lincolnshire which we will all stay in and bring activites to the house.

I think that £150 is a reasonable amount and is what I would pay for a hen do without question. I do draw the line at £300-£400 for a weeking in Marbs as that can just be ridiculous.

I wouldn't expect people to pay alot of money for a hen do. If I was single, and had alot of time to save up, I'd consider going to one, but I wouldn't pay out £150 or so now to go out with friends.

I agree that £150 is too much for a night out with friends. i wouldnt pay that at all.

For my friends hen do in a couple of weeks, I am paying £100 for a buffet lunch, beauty treatment, "goody bag", t-shirt, transport from aberdeen to edinburgh and an overnight stay in a hotel and club entry in Edinburgh.
I think it will then cost be £50 for evening meal and drinks on the night out.
So, I think £150 for all of that is a really good deal and was more than happy to pay it. But if it was £150 for a meal and night out in a local pub then I would not go, regardless of the entertainment!

Mine is £150 per person and that is for hire of the house for 3 nights (people can stay as long as they want, 1 or 3 nights), all food and drinks which we will buy in bulk before we get there and acitivites for everyone.
I personally dont think it is much as it is a full weekend away all inclusive with a pool and jacuzzi and topless butlers. phwoar.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that it is hard to put a figure on how much one should pay for a hen do.

The break down of the hen night would be £25 travel, £27 hotel, I'm imagining people would probs take about £50 out for there drinks in the night. Which i thought was really good considering how much some places can be. in all £100 but then people strt saying well its gona cost us more for food an then something to wear but I thought u wud still need that even if we went local. I've decided I'm just gona have a night away for whoever can make it and then a night in town for ppl that can't. Then at least I'm giving options. Don't know if some of them are just being awkward!

Thanks for all your help in helping me decide.

OK, now you've broken it down I think they're being unreasonable.

Essentially, their costs are £52, plus money for food and drink; a meal can cost as little as £10 depending on where you go (eg a pizza at a chain restaurant with a soft drink costs from £8), and they don't have to buy alcoholic drinks. As for having to buy a new outfit, WTF?! Never heard so much nonsense in my life!

Sounds to me like they're making excuses; in which case, I'd be inclined to still do it, but only with those people, like your sister, who actually want to.

Thanks guys. Was really worried that I was being selfish with a few of them saying it was goin to cost too much. But your right it won't cost much as we'll just go to a pub for a pub lunch which is no more than £10. And we won't be drinking all day as we won't get there til 3ish and by the time we go for food and a look around then back to the hotel to get sorted it'll be 7.30ish when we go out. I'm going to text everyone tonight and give them the option of coming or having a night out at home a few weeks before then at least I'm not leaving anyone out.

I don't think it is selfish at all. I am having a local one and going to Portugal for my main Hen Do.

From the start (for Portugal Hen Do) myself and Chief BM (who has found an amazing deal of £86 each for an All Inclusive Apartment Easter Weekend for 3 nights/4 days!!) spoke to everyone before and asked each person a limit and have ensured that with Flights as well it is under what people had said was their max they could go up to.

I don't think its selfish to want one, but you have to expect that not everyone will be able to afford it, for me my friends in a couple weeks is not dooable as i cannot get a sitter and can't afford the £40 taxi home plus alcohol for the night

That's really cheap if you just include accom and travel..... I'm sure they would want new clothes regardless anyway so I can't see how it would be much dearer than a local night out :/ anyway, if they are claiming it to be too expensive, why say they'd need new clothes?

    There's no logic sometimes.

Butlins for me with 6 of my closest friends and no one else £150 full board 3 nights. Plus a meal out locally for the staff I work with and anyone else. I've been a bit selfish not wanting anyone else to come to butlins but I find it hard to let my guard down and these girls have been my friends for years.

I thought you ment 150$ plus expenses at first. They would have to pay for drinks, food and clothes whether you do it at home or away, so I dont think 50$ for a night away is unreasonable. Especially if you had planned it for a while. I would go ahead with it. Once people agree to coming, others wont want to feel left out and will also agree to come.

I don't think it's selfish my sister in law to be went abroad for hers and did a local one for those who couldn't afford it. Especially if it was planned ages ago they could have put money back and probably have an outfit In their wardrobe they could wear. Like marrying.ryan. When people start agreeing to go others won't want to feel left out. I couldn't attend my sister in laws because my oh spent loads on the stag do and I regretted not putting money back because they had an awsome time x

Sometimes it has often worked out cheaper (in my experience) to go abroad then it has to have stayed in the UK for a Hen Do.

Depends where you go but, when I have been in another country, most bars just want their bar to be busy so for 5 Euros you often get shots and drinks and sometimes even fish bowls! Do that in 3/4 bars then that's 15/20 Euros for a night out!! Especially if you are a Hen Party!! And you have probably had a fair few drinks on top of what you may have drunk before even leaving the hotel!

Personally I think £150 would only be ok to ask bridesmaids to pay that, I wouldnt go on a hen do costing that much unless a bridesmaid, prob £50 is my limit lol!!
Im having a bridesmaid weekend away to Cardiff, 2 nights in a hotel, cocktail making including lunch and a dreamboys show including dinner and club entry, its costing £100 per person. There are some really good bargains out there if you look hard. Im then having just a night out for all the other ladies, so they can spend whatever they can afford on drink and club entry if they want to!

I dont think its fair people r using the excuse of a new outfit etc - everyone can dig an outfit out of their wardrobe or borrow from a friend etc! xx
