I am selling my wedding dress (old one) and have advertised it on G*tree, i only put it on yesterday and have had an email from a lady who wants to buy it and send it to Nigeria, I stated on the ad that i would like payment on collection but she has said she would like to use paypal or internet banking, which is good i suppose as its safer. She has said she cannot collect the item and has offered me £60 extra for p&p...now i have no idea how much it would send to post, do you think this would cover it?

You can use the royal mail website to get an idea of the cost to post it. You'll need to know the dimensions of the box as well as the weight to calculate it. It may be cheaper to send via courier such as DHL or someone else, and you can find these carriers online. My only concern would be if this is real. On gumtree there are warnings about fake email addresses being used for paypal transactions, so if you do go down this route, make sure that you definitely have the money in your account before sending it. Great that you got a response so quickly though!

I hope I don't get into trouble for this. The buyer could well be genuine, but a lot of companies will not post to Nigeria as the fraud rate from there is really high. Essentially, they pay the money into your account through paypal, but then draw it back at a later date saying that it's a fraudulent transaction - we've had it happen to us at work. Even with internet banking, payment can be withdrawn.

After reading the email again i think she wants me to send it to Nigeria though i have replied to confirm where its going. Yeah i have said to her that i will only post it once the funds are in my account...Not sure what to do, she has asked me to remove it so nobody else can bid on it...i'm sure its genuine but you can never be sure can you xx

Hi Thanks for getting back to me i will want to know the recent condition of this item and its total condition amount.I 'm sending it to someone as a Birthday Gift in West Africa(Nigeria),via Royal Mail via usps.International Signed For,but unfortunately I'm not opportune to come get the item myself,so i will really appreciate if you can kindly post the item for me which i will offer you the sum of 60 pounds for postage and packaging of the items Abroad.I will want us to sincerely deal with each other through PayPal Online Auction or Via Bank Transfer, cause i believe its safe for both of us..I will love you to get back to me with all the answers and also PayPal money request or your bank details and the overall cost of the total amount plus p&p and your gumtree ad number,so payment can be made asap and i can get back to you with the postage address...do me a favour by removing the item on gumtree so another buyer will not bid for..
Very true OWB. I recently sold something on the bay to a UK seller who (to cut a long story short) then claimed they didn't receive it. They made the complaint on the last day possible and I disputed the claim, but paypal/bay came down on their side and refunded the money back, without my permission. In this case it was only £10, and it was easier to let it go than get too angry about it. But if it was for any more than that, I would have been seriously peed off. Just be careful.

Even if the funds are in your account it doesn't prove anything. Payment can be withdrawn on paypal for 30 days (I think). If it's a stolen card or fraudulent bank account details then this can also be withdrawn at a later date. We lost £150 last month after 3 transactions went through from Malaysia, only for the card holder to realise their details had been stolen, the bank then sent us a letter saying they were going to take the money back. So now we're going through a financial investigation.
Try to speak to her and really get a feel for if she's genuine.

I have just spoke to h2b about it and apparantly a girl at his work put her IPhone for sale and she got an emaai asking if she would send it to nigeria as it was a gift for ther son and she said it was a con, she never sent her phone so i dont know how she kows it was but he is going to find out exactly what happened. Either eay i am not 100% comfortable with this..another thing putting me off is i advertised it for £700 but stated i was open to offers and she hasnt tried to offer me any less, she's just said she will pay the £700

I would avoid it like the plague.... on Ebay i only sell to UK buyers and do not post abroad as don't know who are dealing with and Paypal tend to protect the person paying so nothing to stop her in a few weeks claiming it was fraudulent and getting the money back. Be carfeul honey !! xx

I would honestly ignore it. We list things on gumtree quite a but and we get so many people from Nigeria wanting to buy. It's always a scam. They always have some story attached.

Plus it's not just about claiming their money back, they can try and access your PayPal account by denting you a fake PayPal email with a fake link to enter your details. They can then try and clear your bank account by transferring money out
Another thing to be weary of is if they ask you to use western union accounts

Avoid!!!!! I was contacted by someone wanting to buy my phone on the bay of e and they contacted me and basically suspended the buyers account (as they brought it on buy it now). And I tried to see my car on autot***** and all I got was emails like this. If you google Nigerian PayPal, you will see loads of reports of scams. Basically, they send the incorrect amount, and you send the item and they send a dispute by PayPal. PayPal always seems to rule in favour of the buyer. If it seems to good to be true - as you only listed it yesterday...- then it probably is!

I agree with most - Avoid as its does sound like a scam, and as you said yourself your not 100% about it so your probably right, wouldn't like to hear that you had lost all that money and the wedding dress to boot. xx

Another Nigerian scam is, I occasionally had requests for me to photograph weddings for nigerian people.
It went something like, they would want to book my services.......then on reading about scams this is how it panned out, they would send payment somehow, for the full amount, but accidentally pay too much.....and then ask for it back. HOW can you accidentally pay too much?
Money Laundering is what it was.

go on parcel 2 go . com and get a quote using measurements. their prices arent too bad & i use them regularly. I actually used them to send my old dress & it came to £20 but that was in the uk. i rolled it up into a black bag so it was smaller etc
