I took my pretty engagement ring to the jewellers as it had developed a small crack on it about a month ago its only just over a year old. I haven't got it back yet, the guy finally tells me that he might not be able to fix it as he has had to try to repair a break which only became apparent when he tried to fix it.
Is he feeding me baloney or can white gold crack where you can't see it.
Does anyone know where i would be able to get the stones reset into a new piece if he can't fix it.
all help gratefully received.

gold is a very stong metal and is very hard t brake or crack , i would get a second opinion on that and see what they say if it is the case then maybe a manufactuers fault xx

i have the exact samw thing with my engagement ring hopfully getting it back tomorrow my ring the band splits into 3 and crosses over itself and one of the crossover bits has cracked. luckaly i got the insurance when we bought the ring so they have to fix it or replace it with another. you can only see the crack on mine from the inside. i think the jewelery advisers on here (the kissing company) can reset stones or i might just be dreaming. hope everything works out xx

I'm sorry to hear your ring has developed a fault.
This sounds like a 'casting' fault to me. Some rings are made by pouring molten metal into a mould. The resulting ring is then polished and crafted to make the finished product. However it is possible for the casting process to leave 'air pockets' or impurities in the metal which weaken the ring and after time cause cracks to appear.
As this is definitely a manufacturing fault, even though the ring is over a year old you should ask for a replacement as it is clearly not 'fit for purpose'.
In a case like this I would not recomend repairing the ring as the crack will probably appear again at a later date.
You should insist on a replacement and if he refuses take it up with your local Trading Standards Office.
You don't say if the jeweller is an independant or part of a chain. This will affect how you pursue the claim.
If its a chain, ask for the store manager and tell him you want the contact details for their head office so that you can lodge a claim. Then email them with the details and tell them you want a response within three working days. Copy the Trading Standards Department in on this email. If you do not get a reply within the 3 days or you are unhappy with the reply go to the Trading Standards office and ask them to take up the claim.
If its a local independant jeweller then you should ask for the owner or shop manager anddeal with them directly. Again if you don't like their response take it straight to Trading Standards.
If they won't replace the ring you would be able to get the stones reset by any reputable firm. We do this on a regular basis, especially for white gold rings as they tend to go yellow after time and need to be replated with Rhodium. We usually re-set the stones in Palladium as this is pure silvery white and never needs replating.
Hope that helps

Hi Smooch
I may be calling on your expertise. would you be able to give me a quote on putting the stones in a new ring if i email you a picture of the ring as it was/is.
Its an individual jeweller with individual rings. I'm not sure they'll do anything because I took it somewhere else to be repaired and not back to them. It was after a year and I just couldn't work up the energy to go and see the original people.
