    Hi

I love the idea of saying a little personnel piece to each other at the top of the isle. However my partner thinks its a little cheesy and the guests don't want to here gooey stuff. What do you guys think?

Surely weddings are a 'gooey' enough thing anyway so may as well make the most of it lol. We're not as I wouldn't have a clue what to say and I'd probably freeze and forget everything with the nerves. I'm happy knowing i only have to repeat a few words at a time so less likely to mess up lol. If you're confident enough though then I don't see why not if your fiancé opens up to it.

We are going to add in a little bit of our own after the "official" wording. And we can make up our own for exchanging the rings too nice thing about a non-church wedding is we can say what we like :)

We are definitely writing our own. It's nice to add a personal touch and say something that really means a lot to the both of you in my opinion, rather than just saying the same old stuff that thousands of couples have said to each other. It doesn't have to be soppy or gooey, just something from the heart!! x

I really want that we write our own, but I still haven't talked about it with h2b. I think he will be fine. It's our special day, I don't really care about what people will think... I want our special day to be the most special ever for us :)

im in the 'its cheesy' camp im afraid, but neither of us are particularly soppy or romantic, even the 'humourous' stuff is too cheesy for me... not my cup of tea at all, so im glad he was on the same page as well

We didn't, ours were standard Catholic Church ones.
You could write some and show your h2b and ask him if he thinks they're cheesy?

We stuck with the standard church ones. We were told we could add to them if we wanted but not take way, and we felt they said enough. It can be nice to say something personal but I personally don't like the idea of silly ones like not snoring or putting the loo seat down. I just feel it's a serious moment that should be kept serious.

Nope, sorry.. Too cheesy and yucky for my taste and think it's very cringeworthy! and embarrassing!Personally I would prefer to have the traditional vows and have the personal vows for when we are alone as its meant for your OH when you are cuddling in the first dance or when you make love for the first time as a married couple .... Or something like that anyway! X

See I don't think it has to be cringeworthy, cheesy or embarrassing or any of those things? It is the same concept as using the traditional vows.. you are making promises to the person you love.. it shouldn't be embarrassing if you really mean them, the only thing that should matter in that moment is you and your OH, not worrying about if you sound cheesy in front of people. I have already started writing my vows and they're not cheesy at all, they are serious promises just like the traditional vows are. I mean I wouldn't be like 'I love you so much, you mean the whole world to me' or anything like that. I am promising to love him and cherish him etc. x

I didn't mean to offend you Flossie - it's just for me it is mushy stuff that I prefer to say in private to my OH as I get embarrassed by saying that stuff with other people around lol x

We chose not to do our own vows as we felt it would be an added pressure to come up with something meaningful and original on top of the 101 other things we had to do. Instead, we chose our own individual vows from the ones given to us by the registrar; we both looked at them 'blind', without the input of the other, and ended up going for the same for the declaratory words (replying 'I am' to the question 'Are you, X, free lawfully to marry Y?') and legal contracting words ('I (name) take you (name) to be my wedded wife/husband'), but went with different ones for the extra vows; I went with 'I look forward to sharing my life with you and, as we journey through life together I promise to cherish, love and care for you always', and he went with 'And I promise to care for you and to love and respect you always')

I really felt that that, with the readings and music, was more than enough and was glad we didn't write our own as I think it'd have put extra pressure on us, like I said, and I do also think there's only so original that you can be.

You could always compromise though and either you write your own and he goes with a 'regular' one, or perhaps you could expand and adapt one of them and make it more you eg through the language eg instead of 'I look forward to sharing my life with you and, as we journey through life together I promise to cherish, love and care for you always', you could have 'I have loved our time together so far and I am so excited about us spending the rest of our lives together, and look forward to the many years of love and laughter still to come'.

For us, we found it too cheesy (as you put it), but it's such a personal thing and you really should do what you want. It's nice we are given the choice these days. We chose from a selection of vows that were in a booklet provided in the end, rather than our own.
