well we originally booked a week in maldives but are now struggling to get the money together in time cut of date is 11th febuary and we have £3,700 left to pay :-( x

so allthought im absolute devostated i have just been looking threw and stumbeled upon mexico
just been lookin and gettin prices of website who we have booked our hols wi and we can get a week all inc for either £1792 or £1698 so we'll only have to pay about £1k which is alot easier than the £3700 the place looks stunning.

now only issue is which hotel to stay in one is over 21's only but sounds a bit like a expensive swingers holiday club lol the other sounds and looks just as fab BUT it has kids there i wanted to go where there was no kids a proper full week with no kids screaming cryin running around just wanted to fully relax the two of us.

has anyone been or goin to cancun and if so where did/are u stayin? xxx

We're going 16th July to 30th July to the Riviera Maya (pics in my albums). I know people will say 'oh it's hurricane season' but what I've read is that it rains for maybe 20 minutes and then stops. Or it rains for two days and then that's it. I don't mind a bit of rain - as a ginger I'm not a sun worshipper! It's 'gourmet all-inclusive', adult-only with a swim-up suite! Can't wait!

Am I right in thinking that the first is the Riu Palace, and the second Temptation resort? If so, I would go with the Riu; Temptation is popular with young people and can get very lively, with drinking games etc. It isn't a swinger's resort exactly, but you can expect a lot of topless women, and a lot of s*x-orientated games eg strip teases, position games, and so on. I don't obv know what your tastes are, but this would not be my cup of tea full-stop, and certainly not for a honeymoon.

Other resorts I'd take a look at are: El Dorado Royale; El Dorado Casita Suites; BlueBay Grand Esmeralda (beach is not good though). Also maybe have a look at the DR; you can get some good deals there.

Any questions, let me know; been to Mx 3 times and am familiar with most resorts.

Are you sure? Those second pics are of Temptations I think; and neither the Riu nor the Sensatori is adult's only; the Sensatori has a small adult's only section (pool and rooms) and one adult's only restaurant, but otherwise it's family-friendly.

I personally am not a fan of Cancun and prepare the Riviera Maya as the beaches are more spread out; if you give me your holiday company, departure airport, and dates, and budget, I don't mind taking a look for you and giving you my recs?

    OK, in Mexico, I've found:

    Gatwick:

Grand Palladium Colonial: £1812 for 7 nights dept 22/04
Riu Palace Mexico: £2082 7 nights dept 22/04

    Manchester:

Ocean Maya Royale (adult's only): £1900 for 7 nights dept 23/04

    Dominican Republic:

Catalonia Royal Bavaro (adult's only): 9 nights for £1972, BUT dept date is 25/04 from London
Ocean Blue and Sand: £1926, 9 nights, dept Gatwick 25/04

Dreams Punta Cana: £1982 7 nights dept Manchester 24/04

IMPO you can't really go wrong with any of the above; but check out reviews. DR's beaches are much nicer than Mexico's IMO and IME; but typically, the resorts in Mexico offer more ;bang for your buck' (though if you haven't been all inc somewhere similar, my personal opinion is you'll probably be blown away by either). The other nice thing with the DR ones from London is you could go for 9 nights rather than 7.

Do also remember though that you will probably need to pay fees to change; usually £35 pp per changes; and they might not match internet prices, so just bear that in mind.

Also, they have loads for Cuba for under £2k for 8 nights, but departures from Manchester are 27/04. They have some fab deals though inc the Ibersotar Tainos in Varadero for £1728; or, you can get 15 nights at the Blau Costa Verde for £1862 (beaches are amazing!); they also have others inc the Sol Rio Luna y Mares for under £2k for 15 nights (I've stayed there and really liked it). No idea if you can go a bit later, but again, might be worth considering seeing as you get an extra week (and because it's all inc, you won't need any more spending money)

Ooh lovely! The Senatori looks great!

Make sure you visit Crococun while there; you can hold and interact with animals inc baby crocodiles, snakes, Mexican hairless dogs, deer, parrots, and so on. Wild monkeys visit all the time, and are SO cute: they will take food right from your hand, it's amazing! It's about a £5 taxi ride each way from the Sensatori, and costs about £12 for entrance (plus tip). Puerto Morelos is another of our faves; it's about £10 each way from the resort, and it's a small fishing village with a few restaurants and shops and a Mayan handicraft market. We buy all our souvenirs there as they have a nice selection, good prices, and it's very low pressure. If you're into diving or snorkelling, this is also where I'd go to do it; resort courses or trips organised with your rep are rubbish, the groups are too large. There are several dive shops in PM, and we took a snorkel tour with a private guide for just £14 pp for 1.5 hours.

Please think really carefully about the dolphin swim. These programmes are really cruel, the animals aren't bred in captivity, many of them are taken from the wild, and some are killed or suffer a lot of trauma in the process. The enclosures are in no way big enough for them, and human interaction on a daily basis can lead to things like disease and infection, and some of the tricks they do (eg getting out of the water a lot) can give them sores.

We did one in the DR despite people advising us against it, and I still regret it, and wish I hadn't been so selfish and pig-headed. It was not nice seeing them in small enclosures (and the facility in the DR is WAY better than most in Mexico in terms of size, how they treat the animals, etc), and I felt horrible contributing to the business.

There are places where you can see and swim with dolphins in the wild, inc Egypt and Hawaii, and I wish we'd waited.

If you want to do it, that's up to you; but I think any true animal lover will just find the whole thing depressing.

If you like animals/sea-life, have a look at snorkelling with sea turtles in Akumal. I've still not done it, but everyone says it's amazing. And the bonus is that they're not in captivity :-)

Also check out a place called the Jungle Place. It's a spider monkey sanctuary (it's a rescue centre for monkeys who've been kept as pets/by photographers) and they do tours where you get to interact with the monkeys eg hold them, feed them, etc. Again, I've not done it, but I've interacted with them at Crococun and they're amazing :-) They have a website which has more info as well as prices.
