I recently contacted a local wedding cake maker about an estimate and for design discussion. I have long been admiring her work through her shop window, but have never been able to get a hold of her personally and was always told to 'come back when she was in' by other staff.

I finally found a Facebook account and got in touch through there, shared my phone number and waited. She told me she'd give me a call the following morning. Never got a call.

A few days later I found a message via Facebook saying that she hadn't forgotten me, it's just that she was super busy and that she would call me in the morning just after 10AM. Guess what? No call until 6 PM when I was in the middle of cooking!

Burned leeks aside, we had a really nice chat about what I wanted. I told her I had seem a cake on her site that would be PERFECT and I'd only need a few changes. My theme is steampunk/victorian with an ivory, gold and duck egg blue colour scheme. She ooed and ahhed and said that she had done a steampunk cake before for a birthday and that it shouldn't be too difficult at all. I mentioned that I wanted the same kind of cake only with an extra tier and alternating colours to match the them. She said it would be super easy to do and I should get back to her with the colours as a design. (I'm an illustrator you see, so I told her I'd sketch it and show her what I meant.)

She quoted me £150 - £200 for what I had told her and explained that if I wanted extras like pearls or diamantes that it would cost a little bit more and that if I had foam or silk flowers (Which I do!) that it would bring the cost down, as sugarpaste can be expensive and tricky.

I spent a while on my design last night making sure the colour tones were just right and posted it, only to get a message back saying "Would work with the other aspects we spoke about interweaved into the flowers BUT not within the budget you quoted Im afraid Rachel. Start saving your pennies now x"

I'm confused. I already discussed the changes BEFORE she quoted me and the changes are only really an extra tier and colour changes. (Oh and a tiny amount of gold chain, but I only added that to fill in space and I can take it or leave it.) But, she was already OK with that. We even discussed deposit prices and so on. I haven't added any pearls, diamantes, or shimmer powders and such to it, so I don't get it.

Cake is for 30 to 37 people.

Is it normal to bump up the price for colour changes, even though you discussed it before you agreed the price quote?

Hmm, this would annoy me TBH. She seems a bit unorganised: not calling when she said she would (twice), not giving an accurate quote...

I would email back saying what you've said here (that you're a bit confused as to why it will cost more given you had discussed these changes before she quoted) and see what she says. If she's still adament it will be more, ask her exactly what it will cost, and go from there. £200 is a decent budget for that size cake (we're paying £420 for one serving 4 times that many people), so I'm sure you can find someone else to do the design you have in mind if she comes back with an extortionate quote.

    Thank you for the advice.

I have contacted her to ask what she would quote me for the design. When she gets back to me I intend to quiz her just why it would be extra, especially with her already OKing such changes beforehand.

It's not even until 2016 haha!

it sounds like warning bells are already ringing.

That was a silly and flippant comment to make, 'start saving'.

The professional thing to do would be to give you the quote and explain why the extra charges (ie the additional teir) which would be fair enough.

I'd see what she comes back with, but start looking elsewhere, just in case.

I would look elsewhere if I were you hun. There are lots of good and talented cake makers out there who would be able to make it for you. She has been clever, by talking to you on the phone you have no hard proof about what it is she said to you, or exactly how much she quoted to make it. Make sure that whatever you do, you always get things in writing so that they can't change them! xxx

I think you should look for other cake makers and get other quotes hun. She sounds rather disorganised to me and unreliable, I couldn't trust her personally from what you describe. There are lotsnof great cake makers out there.

Apologies, but I'm feeling like a real doofus right now. Supremely emotionsal for some reason.

On advice I went to one of the only local cake makers left to choose from and I had high hopes when she replied all professional and cheery. Such a stark contrast to the previous one. I was even saying to my H2B how happy I was with her reply. She said she'd be going away for a while so would meet up after she returned when she got back. I said that was not problem, showed her the design and explained the date and everything. We swapped mesaages and such and everything was so positive! I thought that I'd finally found someone I could mesh well with to make it.

I logged in just a sec ago to find this:

    "Hi Rachel,

Im afraid I only use hand made flowers. Cake decorating is my hobby and passion not baking. I only do that because the two come hand in hand.

If you are wanting to use artificial flowers, have you tried ***** ***** on Nottingham Road. They don't make their own flowers so Im sure will be happy to use something else. Their cakes are very good and I believe they are quite reasonable.

Should you change your mind and decide to go for the hand made option, by all means let me know and I will be pleased to arrange to meet you.

Sorry I cannot help you at this time.

    Regards"

Uh... OK. Yet ANOTHER sudden switch!

    I replied:

"Would you have any objections to me adding on the flowers myself if I can get hold of them?"

    I got this in reply:

"What I was trying to say Rachel is that baking is not my main interest. I don't bake for a job, this is purely a hobby, so I only offer a limited choice of flavours and only bake cakes because I need something to put my decorations on. There are plenty of people out there more qualified than me in the baking department such as *** at ***** ***** or ***** at the cake shop at the top of Church Street. Im sure they will be delighted to offer plain cakes in a range of flavours or even source the flowers for you if they can."

I'm confused! Why market yourself as a professional cake maker if... I don't... What!? Is anyone in this area even remotely suitable? The heck!? D:

(Starred names out for obvious reasons)

Oh and now she is ignoring me. :/

I only have 3 choices left in the local area and one of those I don't even like their cakes. :C

Does it have to be the local area? We found that companies within about a 20 mile radius would not charge extra for delivery and set-up, so, unless you live somewhere very remote, I'd probably widen your search.

    WTF?!?!?
I think I can translate the email - I don't use artificial flowers because I can't charge you more when I do.
I'm so angry for you. It looks like your wedding is still a ways off, a lot can change in 3 years. You will be able to find someone that will be able to provide the perfect cake for you. It's a shame you have to deal with mental people like this in the meantime.

Since I have no transport I've been focusing on local (IE: This and surrounding towns) cake makers. The ones I haven't contacted are just, in all honesty, because I'm not fond of their work. (Eee, that sounded harsh. D: ) If you or anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears!

I have looked at a few in the city (Derby), but only a couple have stood out. I'm waiting to hear back from them.

And yes, Sarah. If my co-ordinator hadn't asked me to bring quotes on saturday to her I wouldn't be doing this.

Melty: but most will include delivery and set-up in their fee ie you won't need transport. Ours is costing £420 and that includes delivery and set-up at the venue, which is about a 25 minute drive from where the lady lives. So, have you considered expanding your search to, say, a 15-20 mile radius, rather than focusing on local towns? Or have you done this already?

It's more or less the worry of me visiting the p;laces to chat in person and try samples and whatnot. Unless they'd be able to come out to me, that would be the issue. Delivery and such is not an issue, so long as I get to talk and view in person. :)

Besides my mother (Who doesn't do decoration on cakes at all, but makes nice ones), I am pretty much the only cake baker/decorator in my family. I have thought about making it myself, but I would need a ton of practice. I have 3 years, so I guess that's enough to a certain level, but... Yeah. Still not pro.

I'm having trouble with ANOTHER cake maker now. They outright REFUSED to make me a red velvet tier and gave me a huge lecture via email about how it's unhealthy and so on and so fourth. I explained that I prefer it traditional and made using beetroot and NOT with food colouring. They THEN started picking on my design by saying how out of proportion it is!

JEEZE LADY! I drew it in 5 minutes! Give me a break!

Really hope you find a good one soon. Does your reception venue have a list of preferred suppliers? They normally can suggest a few decent ones to check out.

These are, amusingly, the local areas 'best of the best'.

Today I decided to go and see a new cake shop that hasn't been there long at all. The owner is quite young and seemed nice enough on the phone.

... I may have a winner here. She was friendly, non-judgmental, offered to try baking the flavours she had not made before, even went as far as to show me examples of everything she'd use! And the best part? She quoted me £109!

    I nearly fainted. xD

If anyone spoke to me like that I swear to god, Id end up arrested. was that supposed to be a professional?!

Since when was cake supposed to be healthy. Good grief!

Hopefully your newest place comes out good for you!
