Anyone else getting married for less than £500? I feel like we are the only people who are getting married despite having no money! Basically we are getting married at our church, having photos by friends and family then having a buffet put on by the church. So we have no car, no photographer, no evening do, no DJ or anything - we're just sticking on some CDs using partner's and best man's old DJ stuff.

Got an amazing dress off eBay for £93, the buffet is being done for free, the rings are £30 each from Argos, the cake is being done for free, somebody will drive me to church, best man and bridesmaids are paying for themselves as are any overnight guests, made my own invitations and making my own thingies to make the table look nice - what are they called? Oh the flowers are being done by a lady at church too, a friend (a mobile hairdresser) is doing my hair and my friends are doing nails, make up etc... and obviously don't have to do table plans or anything like that I just have to keep my Mum and Dad apart! We're not having a honey moon either. Got my dates wrong too didn't realise half term was so late this year so I get married on 21st Oct and go back to work the followig day - gutted!

To me the most important thing is being married, not the wedding but it would be nice to have what everybody else seems to have :-( If we actually waited until we could afford to get married we'd never do it - you'd think a bus driver and a teacher could afford to get married.

Good for you, wedding should be about what you want it to be about.

Many people put off getting married cos they think its our of budget, but I think if you want to do something, you will do it, no matter what it takes.

See many people going on shows such as battle of brides and don't tell the bride, and all they do is bitch and moan, they are only doing it for the money and not for the marriage itself.

I dont think it matters how much you spend - the most important thing is marrying the person you love.

I agree with Vickie above those programmes make me squirm....they are mostly ungrateful divas who want to be on TV!

Technically speaking you can get married for cheaper if all you do is pay the registrar, and just have 2 guests who are the witnesses. Then buy them maccy ds for the wedding breakfast. Haribo rings, sorted!! :)
at the end of the day, you can spend £500 or you can spend £50,000, so long as it is the day you want, and the people that you love can be there, then it makes no odds how much it costs. Its the union between two people that counts more than budgets and dresses, and as long as you love each other, its all good!!

£500 is difficult, as it often costs nearly this just for the ceremony, if you're getting a lot free then that helps! A £1000 is just about realistic for most budget brides.

Wow go you! I think £1000 is a realistic budget wedding, as said before. Getting married at a registry office still costs £200 ish?. but good luck! xx

Will you still be married at the end of it? if the answer is YES.......then its a perfect wedding.

There are loads of here that are doing it on a budget......and it CAN be done if you are clever and crafty.

we are doing ours for £5000, well done you for having your budget wedding, i do love a bargain, friends of ours got married in a registry office, six guests and they all went for fish and chips afterwards, she wore a secondhand dress but looked stunning, they were both on benifits as both had been made redundant at the same time, now both working and very happy with their lot xx

That's it, and the end of the day a wedding is only one day. I do think the meaning of the day can sometimes get lost in a blur of lace, favours and color coordinating bridesmaids xx

I suppose you're right I think I watch too much "Don't tell the bride" or at least I used to when we got engaged and I'd be like "I want that I want that" then I bought wedding magazines...big mistake! I do reeeeally want to be married to my partner I just want to be his wife. The thought of a huge wedding with sit down meal and all the biggest/best/everything co-ordinated and fabulously expensive would make me tremble even if we DID have the budget but you know just to be able to afford professional pics would be nice. I'm so upset i couldn't have the dress I wanted though before we got into financial trouble (again partner's 2 redundancies within 13 months!)...it was £1000 but it was "THE ONE" (and there was an example in the bridal shop window that I had to drive past everyday grr) but hey ho my dress now is lovely all the same.

I think many people try to compete with each other on weddings I think with all these e-mails from various wedding providers I signed up to ages ago (which I need to unsubscribe from) are getting right on my wick lol. Here you can have a car for X amount...that's our entire budget :-/

Because we're getting married in our church our pastor is willing to be lenient with the price and the registrars fees were £70 when we gave out notice this week (I was excited much - needed a lie down!).

How irritating that I'll be back at work the following day - no idea why they changed half term this year

Wow you have done amazingly well. So nice of your church to do all that for you both. Our budget is £2500, it's both our second marraiges. I've got a huge close family, so we're getting married away in Gretna, which I wanted anyway.
We have ordered a cake and real flowers and we are paying for venue and registrar and photographer (at cut rate though, we got discounts) We're not having cars (hotel we're staying in is over the road from the venue) and I'm not having any bridesmaids. We are paying for 11 guests hotel for 2 nights and 19 guests wedding meal, which is the bulk of the budget, but I've made all my own invites, place name cards and holders, thank you scrolls, favours, individual menus and all our table decorations. My wedding dress cost £60 instead of £900 as it was ex-window display. My H2B is hiring his suit, his best mans suit and my son's suit (my son is giving me away as I lost my Dad 19 mnths ago). Included in this amount is a 5 day mini-moon in Gretna green. We're not having an evening do, the hotel we're staying in have given us a small private function room for the day, we're just having some wedding games, a drink and the hotel are lending us a CD player. We're pretty chuffed with the final amount, it would have cost us loads more if we'd have got married at home.

I agree with everyones comments above its nice to have alot of money to spend on your wedding and if your rich enough to have what you want thats great but lets be realistic here everyones going to have the same at the end of it all no matter where you get married, a wedding certificate no matter what everyones entitled to have what they want and spend what they want and im happy knowing that we will only be having what we can afford we are getting married in a church and going to a golf club after for the evening do its perfect for us in every way yes i did want the abroad wedding but that would have meant that everyone i wanted there would not be possible i will say that i have my dream dress but will def be getting most of my stuff in sales nearer the time xx

I totally agree it would be nice to have everything you want, but you need to draw the line somehwere.
i orginally set a budget of £6000, but i found the venue of my dreams and im getting that for 4500. so cause
we loved the venue so much, weve put the wedding back by a year,
I am mega saving, and totaly looking for ways to cut costs on other things, and looking for ways to make extra money.
........ but all i can wait for is to say I DO.

Thank You! I seem to get a lot of hassle from friends/family coz my budget is under £500. I got my dress from Ebay £19, The register office is £145. My bridesmaids are paying for their own dresses, the groom is using his own suit, as are the groomsmen. We are having a late afternoon ceremony, going straight into an evening disco/buffet. My mother is making the cake, family are doing the food. At the end of the day it's being married that matters, not throwing money at guests etc.

we getting married on a budget too, and im sticking to it, alot of our bits are coming from ebay too. i love the place. all our wedding clothes are coming from there, flowers are been done quite cheaply same with cake and all because we giving them ways to branch out into a market they havent covered before.

but because we have so many guests coming to us from england we had to book a hotel for everything as it allowed our guests to havesomewhere cheaper to stay. they pay the hotel room costs not us.

We spent about £6000 on our wedding and like Donda, we got married at Gretna Green as well. Donda I agree - it would have cost more to get married at home, and we couldn't find anywhere here in Leeds that matched up to Gretna (the registry office is in the city centre so not good for parking or many pics etc) and we loved the idea of the history behind Gretna as well.

In our budget we managed to have a week in Malta, all inclusive for our honeymoon as well, so don't think we did too bad - but I only had one bridesmaid, had artificial flowers, 17 guests and cut out non important things like favours and chair covers. We also got our cake bought for us from my parents, and for the evening of the wedding we were allowed our own CD's in the hotel bar (which turned into a great night as most of the guests spent most of the night dancing).

I think this is great! So many of us get wrapped up in all the little details and worrying about what our guests will think about centerpieces and entertainment and favours etc that we forget the actual reason they are there, to celebrate two people who love each other promising to spend their lives together, and that is what it is all about, not how much it all costs! So good on you! xxx
