I know at some point someone has posted on here about photographers and how much they are to hire depending on what you want. My H2b and I have been discussing or should I say debating on whether to have a Professional or Amateur, my H2b went loopy when I said I think it would be nice to have a professional where by he says that its alot of money we would be better off having a friend of ours do the job, now dont get me wrong I do not have a problem with that at all, its just our day and like any bride and groom we want to have memories we can treasure and say ' wow that was amazing - the photographer really caught the moment there, from how the light picked up the colours to how the scene was shot how it picked out different emotions'..I know they cant create miracles, but im sure you know what I mean. I dont want to look back on the photos years later and think oh my god what the hell happened there, without causing offence or upset to anybody ill just say its a big responsibility to ask someone who is not a professional photographer to cover a wedding specially if they havent done one before and the amount of pressure it puts on that one individual to turn out perfect shots is immense, Im not sure i want to inflict that on anyone.
Not only that you have peace of mind that your photos are in good hands, not many chances of photos getting accidentally deleted or blurred, I dont know its hard for sure. We are making and will continue to make cuts right across the wedding planning - my dress will be coming from bay of e, so will most of the accessories and the gifts for attendants, some of the H2bs attire will also be, the wedding cake will more than likely be made by a friend of a friend, the flowers are a wedding present from a friend who is a florist... so is there any harm in spending a good portion on a photographer?

Brides & Grooms what do you think?

I think there is no harm but believe it or not you can find some gems for cheap. Third year photography students at uni or one's fresh out are great. They need to buid their portfolio and have the training but can't start charging the big bucks till they've got a few under their belt. Just make sure you view their course work etc first and have a pre wedding shoot if you can to see what they come up with.

I'm lucky in that I've worked in the film industry for a few years and have racked up a few favours owing from directors etc and I'm part of a very media based church that want to help.

There are more pros than cons when having a professional for sure, currently looking at what Vamps said - photography students, cant go wrong if we have a look at their work see what they have done, I will be picky though, but then its our money and our wedding so have a right to be. : )

Personally I think if you can afford to have a pro then have a pro. I say this as an amateur myself. Pro wedding photographers are pro for a reason and it is their experience you are paying for. They know how weddings work and how to organise everyone to be in the right place at the right time. They know how to group people together to make the best shots and how to take the most flattering poses of the bride and groom. Yes when it comes to landscapes, architecture, animals and a few snap shots of people I can take a good photo but there is a difference from what you have time to set up the exposures to the light settings and going for all out action that is at a fast pace. I was asked to photography some one's wedding and it is amazing at how hard it is to control everyone, get them in place and get them all looking in the right place at the right time. In some of them I had to spend a lot of time in photoshop editing to put some one's head from one image onto another to get one decent group photo.

If you go for an amateur then you need to allow a lot more time for them to work in order to get things right. They may not take into account just how close people have to be standing together in order to make the group look united and that you have not just fallen out with your hubby. Its why pros are always asking you to move in etc.

The way I see it is that the photos are the one thing you have left after the wedding. They are the things you hang on the wall, hand out to friends and family and look back on in years to come. If they are not right you will never forgive yourself. I would say if you are on a tight budget to get a pro in for the main parts and then use an amateur for the rest of the day. At least then you know that the important bits are covered.

Thanks Jo thats great : ) Its great to have another amateur photographers opinion, our best mans friend was originally going to do all the shots - both my h2b and myself love photography and love spending time shooting pictures of animals and landscape but you are right, people are hard to photograph, we were a little sceptic about using amateur for our wedding, Id love to have a pro for the whole day but very expensive but like you said - they are pro for that reason. Think will use our friend for the evening time, i just dont want to upset him by saying we only want him for that time - being a photographer surely he will understand. : )

I dont think theres any problem with getting a amateur, I know quite a few photographers that have just started up/are at college and some of them have just started photographing weddings and some of their images are just as good as proffesionals :)

What a lovely way of putting is Suzky - very true too : )

Very nice Kye - Its not what you know its who you know isnt it : ) oh i couldnt agree more, nothing worse than feeling forced into poses for photographs definately much more natural not posing, alot of the time you get the best shots too as people are far more relaxed. : ) xxx
