Hello, I’m Ruth Douglas, an independent celebrant based in beautiful Devon. I create relaxed, meaningful and completely personal wedding ceremonies that celebrate who you are and what matters most to you.

If you are at the start of your wedding planning and wondering what a celebrant actually does, you are not alone. Many couples begin by looking at the options offered by registrars and then discover that there is another choice. A celebrant-led wedding allows you to have your ceremony exactly where and how you want it, with words and moments that feel genuine and true to you.

What it’s like to work with me

When we work together, we begin with a conversation. I take time to get to know you both and to understand what feels right for your ceremony. We explore what makes your relationship unique and what kind of atmosphere you want to create.

I guide you with gentle structure and practical ideas, always leaving space for your personalities to shine through. You can include readings, vows, rituals or music that are meaningful to you, or keep things simple and heartfelt. My aim is to help you create a ceremony that feels joyful, natural and authentically you.

Ceremonies that reflect you

Your wedding ceremony can take place in almost any setting that feels special to you, whether that is by the sea, in a garden, woodland, meadow or favourite venue. You are not limited by licensed spaces because the legal marriage paperwork can be done separately at your local registry office.

Your celebrant-led wedding to be completely personal. You can choose who speaks, what is said, and how your story is told.

How I work

I take on a small number of ceremonies each year so that I can give every couple my full attention and care. From our first chat through to your wedding day, I am there to offer guidance, ideas and reassurance.

I work in an open and inclusive way with couples of all genders and backgrounds. What matters most is that your ceremony feels authentic and comfortable for you.

My approach is thoughtful, creative and calm. I help couples shape their ideas, find the right words, and build confidence about what is possible. Together, we create a ceremony that feels balanced, honest and full of meaning.

My background

Before training as a celebrant, I spent many years working in community and creative roles that centred on people and storytelling. Writing and language have always been part of my life, and I value the way words can bring comfort, connection and joy.

Becoming an independent celebrant was a natural step that brings together those skills and my love of helping people mark important life moments with warmth and care.

I create completely bespoke ceremonies just for you. I work with you to tell your story, your voices, your way. Whether your wedding is on the beach, in a barn, woodland or garden, I'll create a ceremony that captures the vibe of the venue. You choose what to include in your ceremony. If it is important and meaningful to you, we can include it. I work with you from the first day, here to answer questions, random thoughts, and calm last minute nerves. I'm here for you and to advocate for you. Legal marriage formalities (via register office) are separate. Your ceremony with me is about meaning, not paperwork. I work in Devon, the South West and throughout the UK. I take on only a limited number of weddings each year so I can give you focused attention and craft something truly memorable.
