I'm going cake tasting today! Yum....(it's not a bad life is it)
My fiance loves fruit cake but I think it looks like dead flies and tastes like....well I won't say!
I love the idea of cupcakes, lots of different coloured ones with sugar roses etc etc all on different cake stands AND I'd love to make them myself as i'm a secret Stepford wife. BUT everyone thinks it's going to be too much work so i'm going to the world famous 'Slattery's' cake shop which happens to be at the top of my road (nightmare for the waistline)

Just wondering what everyone elses plans are for their cake!

And any ideas on canapes? I think i want sweet french macaroons and petit fours but will people want savoury stuff do you think....?

Ooh Slattery's! Wow, massive jealous! My CBM lives in Manchester, think we'll be going cake tasting there - although I'm getting married in Yorkshire, so prob won't be buying from there :)

I think I want cupcakes - mainly because it seems to me that a couple can be squished without disaster, but a whole cake that gets dropped doesn't bear thinking about.

My MoH is making a load of cupcakes for the bottom tier of my cake, personalised for the wedding party and child guests. I'm gonna ask MIL2B to make ours, if she wants to, cos when I house sat last weekend I found some amazing cake books, so I'm guessing she's a secret cake genius. I know what I want, and plus she'll make cake that I can eat.. I'm gluten intolerant, but so is FIL2B so she knows what she's doing :)

Having a different layer for each one is becoming very common and is a fantastic idea to cater for everybodies tastes. Were having an 8-tier chocolate brownie cake covered in chocolate truffle (exactly like lindor chocolate) Im going to see if i can have the top tier chocolate orange as its my fave :D x

love the different layers idea (everyone happy)
Well I went to Slattery and the woman thought it was a better idea to make my own cupcakes if i was capable!!! She said they could provide sugar flowers etc for the decoation if i wanted them and they're starting cupcake classes in may, so i might book onto one! She said you can freeze the cakes for a month and then decorate them the day before!
Tried the macaroons they were fabulous! and picked out the sort of extra desserts I want for the evening buffet.
    Blooming delicious!!!!!

One of my friends knows a lady who has just started a cake business and she brought some down for me today (my bday present) and now I am thinking that I want cupcakes for the wedding!! She has said she can personalise them for us (wish I had the patience to make my own tho)

Hmm, not sure if I want to go to Slattery's with my CBM now - about the first thing she said when I said I was getting married was "Well WE can make cupcakes - any rubbish ones can just go at the back!" No dear, NO rubbish ones, thank you! And if Slattery's were to tell her she's right then I might not be able to stop her!

Lucy - will you have time to decorate them all the day before?!

We were going to have 3 tiers,
bottom tier - sponge (no jam or cream, it's yucky)
    middle - chocolate sponge
    top - fruit cake
but then someone mentioned carrot cake and since both me and H2B are a bit partial to some carrot cake I think we'll add a small 4th tier on top (as in small enough for just 2 people, lol)
    :0)

Mara.. beware with having fruit cake as the topish tier... I've been advised on having fruit as the bottom tier as it's much heavier and will sink through the other tiers :D

Thanks Shell. That will give me something to think about. I just didn't want too big a tier of the fruit coz not many people like it, but I suppose I'd rather a lot of fruit cake in the freezer instead of a ruined cake on the day. thanks again, I nver would have known. x

Fruit cake on top is fine, but you have to support it with dowels.

We are going for a home made cake - we both love baking and our known among our friends for the couple who ALWAYS make birthday cakes for everyone (in whatever shape is desired). Both the mums are super bakers too, so the current plan is decide on what kind of cake we want (probably a mixture as we cant decide) then get the mums to bake and decorate (under strict guidelines). If we get any time though I think we will try to decorate it together, but as has been mentioned already, there will be loads to do, so time may run out.
