We've all been saying on here that 1st anniversary is paper. I was told this morning in a card and gift shop that actually it's cotton and the 2nd anniversary is paper. I questioned this and the lady insisted it was as she had a printed list by the till.
So I've just looked it up and according to w1k1pedq@ paper is in the US and traditionally cotton is in the UK, then it's the other way round for the 2nd anniversary.
Slightly confusing but think I'm going to stick with the UK tradition, reckon we've been adopting the US way over here.
Any thoughts? x

I really didn't know this, Im going to do UK too I think - H2B hates that we are too American (Daughter likes Disney Channel lol)

I agree that things are very American for many things now.
I just find this one really confusing. The shop and w1kqped1@ say the same thing but every other website says paper is 1st and cotton is 2nd, even in the UK.

I had no idea paper was the US tradition for wedding anniversaries I forget that our tradition can merge and continue too however I think paper is a good for your first anniversary the gift could be getting a copy of your wedding certificate and framing it and handing it to your husband for your first anniversary year gift I'm not to fussed to be honest but good to know thoe IDL

bearing in mind that Wikipedia is american based and that anyone can go on and edit/add anything to it i wouldn't trust it anyway.
According to Debretts website ( being the ones who seeming uphold the rules on etiquette etc )......
The historic origins of wedding anniversaries date back to the Medieval German empire, when husbands crowned their wives with silver and gold wreaths, marking 25 and 50 years of marriage respectively.
Other anniversaries have evolved from more commercial origins during the 20th century. Nevertheless, the anniversaries listed below are a useful guide, and may help with the selection of appropriate gifts:
My parents have been married for 30 years and she said as long as she can remember its always been paper for the first anniversary
After 7 years and 11 months he proposed to me 18.10.13
Our son is 5 years old and our world
Getting married 15.08.15.
Life hasnt been easy but we have each other :)

Thanks Heather. After Lala's post I decided to go with the majority and ordered something for paper. I was so confused though and it's likely a lot of people in Epping are doing things the other way round.

Oh lala my h2b will be disappointed it's our 3yr anniversary next month and he keeps going on about 'giving me the wood'. I'll let him know he's got it wrong and needs to wait another 2 years.
