Hi all, I just like some thoughts on this. Initially we decided on the cupcakes from waitrose to save money but now the mil to be has offered to buy the traditional cake. I'm slightly torn between convenience and free cake to colourful cute cupcakes that will require setup and we probably have to pay for it. Problem is because our evening reception is different venue to register office and we need to set it up on our own on the day itself so it will involve some planning and going to be a bit tricky :( however, I have put much thoughts into the selection and set up of the cupcakes and was kind of looking forward to it. What do you do?

If you like the cupcakes then stick with it - a free cake is only a bargain if its what you actually want, otherwise its just a compromise. Personally I would thank her for the offer and explain that you really want cupcakes and if she's up for it then you would love for her to make the cupcakes for you.

Hi ladies thanks for the input. I think the h2b is insisting on the traditional cake after a phone call with his mum now. We can't set up the day before as the venue is booked :( I'm just going to go with it. Just need to come up with creative ideas on how to dress the cake up now :)

We too are having both but we are not having cupcakes we are having mini cakes and a 4 tier traditional cake on top of that. There is a pic on my profile. Maybe a thought for you as you get best of both. Xxx
Our daytime theme is 'afternoon tea and Pimms' so we aren't having an extra cake as it could be cake overload! But in the evening after the hog roast we're having mini cupcakes. They're gone in 2 bites but there shouldn't be any waste either xx

Could you not have both so have your top tier as the cake from your MIL and the cupcakes underneath?

Have a look in my album, we are having a single cake and cupcakes, but on a stand, so they look tiered.
