Sooooo i'm toying with the idea of karaoke..me and 2 friends are not too bad singers, one is a professional so she's actually rather good. Thing is if i get it do i risk her singing and people being like 'omg!! youre amazing' and having her steal some limelight...i'm looking at it as getting people up and having a bit of fun but i don't want it to get to serious...

    What does everyone else think?

If she really good other people may not want to go depends on your family and friends really
I have some who wouldn't get up after her and some who wouldn't care I love the idea but my H2B would hate it so we won't be having it

Personally I find karaoke cringey even if the people are good, you can't really dance to it either x

I find karaoke cringe too! But I do find that it does get people together and people who don't know people seem to relax more with a bit of karaoke because its always a laugh. There will always be one person who is really good, so I don't think it'd steal the limelight as long as you and your H2B do a song together :) x

I would say yes, but only for a VERY small portion of the evening! Our friend got married last year and had karaoke in small parts, immediately after the evening guests arrived and then one or two songs on the hour, so you had to leave a note with the DJ of who wanted to sing what. It worked out well! You would get lots of dancing then have a wee croon at the hour, then more dancing. I wouldnt sing myself, but my H2B and his brothers all got up and sang A little Respect by Erasure, it was amazing!! lol Even if my Dave did tear his tongue tie!! Ouchie!

Pros... can really get people having fun
Cons... some people like me are shy no matter how many drinks, and maybe think they sound amazing and perhaps dont... it can become cringy. My pals got round this by making sure that you couldnt sing on your own for karaoke, it had to be a duet or more people!

For me personally I don't see karaoke as a form of entertainment for a Wedding. Hen Do/Stag Do yes.

Not everyone likes it so may segregate some guests. Also, when I am at a Wedding I prefer to be able to dance away and sing along to the music whilst dancing when nobody can actually hear the cat being strangled!!

I am not sure it is the right setting - certainly at our wedding. Depends what you/ your guests like to do I guess.

I like the idea of doing a couple of songs and then letting the DJ do a bit so there's something for everyone. Your friend could kick it off - people might hear her then have a few drinks and think they sound as good as her. Or you could ask her to wait until later in the night if you think its more likely people will be put off.

I love karaoke although I am truly terrible!

    My concerns would be:

    1. You lose control of the songs/type of music you want.
    2. It kills dancing...the dance floor will be dead as your best mate from school tries to jolly your uncle roger into performing a duet of 'ivory and ebony'. Somebody else will be tryin to rustle up interest in a five part harmony of bohemian rhapsody whilst a gaggle of girls fall out over who gets to sing 'hit me baby one more time'. In the meantime, those who want to dance will have to suffer abrupt changes in pace as 'Angels' segues gracefully (?) into 'killing in the name of'...and the one person who can't sing but loves to be the centre of attention puts her name in fifty times. Meanwhile, your guests are forced to endure eighteen 'individual' versions of living on a prayer and someone tactfully sings the song you know was your ohs and exes 'song'. Or your beloved late grandmas funeral song. Or a song that reminds you of an awful time.
    3. Guests will end up watching the performers, rather than socialising with each other.

It does depend on your guests though - however as most weddings tend to have a much broader age range than a normal night out would, I'd maybe skip it.

it would be a big NO for me. firstly OH is petrified by the thought of karaoke. secondly i think its best saved for a drunken night out i would only get up on karaoke if i was completely hammered and i don't plan on getting like that on my day… xx
