Hi Ladies I want to get out and try on some dresses. I am not a normal girly girl an I HATE clothes shopping now I know this is a completely different experience can you give me any tips on what I should do. I don't wear makeup so don't plan on wearing it when trying dresses on and I am going to buy a new bra (id buy a new one for the big day s o need it to look like it would on the wedding day) anything else you can give me to make the shopping for the dress enjoyable and as less stressful as possible. the idea of spending a day looking and trying things on fills me with dread but im hoping once I start trying them on I will love it x

Hi! U will love it! Take minimal people with u, too many cooks and all tht... Personally I would suggest u make an effort with your appearance to try dresses on as this will give u more of an idea of how you may want to look for your wedding day... It could also influence a theme. Have a look on the net at different styles of dress u might like to try... I was hesitant and first and my sister had me in gypsy style dresses! Hated that! Lol... I found my dress after only trying on 7 nd I've ended up with something completely the opposite of what I though I wanted... Put your trust into your consultant - it's their job! Xxx

I'm very much the same as you! I dreaded dress shopping and after going to visit a few shops, I still hate it!! When I first got engaged I was sooo excited but that soon changed.

Every time I walk into a shop I feel incredibly self conscious and like I don't really belong there, I get really overwhelmed by all these dresses and end up leaving! So, having tried on a couple I know exactly the style I want and have found a uk based company who sell the exact dress I want.

Another thing that concerned me was that we've just started a fertility treatment journey and it's quite likely we'll have not long had a baby before the wedding or I'll be preg, so I was wary of buying an expensive bridal shop dress, it arriving and not being able to wear it. So the dress I've found fits the bill at only £395!!

I'm sure you won't be like me, and once you get going you'll love it. Defo don't take loads of people!! Good luck x

Im only taking my sister who is my bridesmaid and my mum IF she can make it as she is very busy.

I have an idea of what style I would like but obviously that may change once I try some on. The biggest issue I have is that im a size 16-18 (Not the biggest but not the smallest) and all the pictures ive seen are of small ladies in dresses.

Im just going to bite the bullet and go and hopefully once ive done one shop ill be ok for the test x

my best advise is even if you've got in mind what type of dress you want try all different kinds, the dress i chose was completely different to what i thought i wanted don't take too many people but take the ones who will be honest (if your mum will say you look good in anything maybe take a friend too) hope all goes well and hope you enjoy it xx

i took my daughter (brutally honest) and my mum who thinks i look great in a bin bag. I wasnt thrilled about going dress shopping, but had an idea in mind of what i wanted(the typical princess dress, It looked awful, the consultant lady brought me her choice of dress and i refused to try it on as i thought it was hideous, so after a few more disaster dresses i agreed to try on the ugly dress, and when i got it on it looked and felt amazing. So i agree with missweedles - trust your consultant and go with an open mind xx

If you go onto mori lee website it's style 2607, there is a couple that I like but this is my favourite but doesn't come out until feb.

Yeah I'll be going with an open mind and will try on anything to see how it looks.

It looks like it will just be me and my sister who is brutally honest going shopping.

How long do you recon to give in each shop when trying dresses on? Xx

I agree take few people with you. I was the same I dont see the point in going to try dresses on with make up or tan I think it ruins the dresses even if their only sample ones. I wore a strapless bra so I didnt have to worry about straps. Try and visit as many shops as possible as they all stock diff designs xx

I took my sister (again brutal) and my mum (will say anything to please! ) and just be prepared for feedback. My sister knows me well and can read my face like a book, but one dress I thought I really liked and she just 'meh'd'. I realised when I found my dress she was riht but was a bit disheartened. You have to trust their opinions but dont rely on them alone, it is your dress after all!

Pick a small independent boutique with a good reputation so there is less chance of pressure selling. Then keep an open mind and try on every style, shape and material.

Don't worry about makeup or wearing any special bra. Just wear your favourite undies but preferably not thongs! Having your bottom out in front of a stranger is embarrassing.

Take only your absolute closest with you, I only took my mum, sister and best mate.

    Enjoy the experience!

I think the ones im going to are independent stores, The two places im going to at the end of the month have a great reputation in Glasgow,

Im really only getting a new bra because I need them the ones ive got just now need replacing lol I don't wear thongs so no chance of thar happening although I could imagine the embarrassment.

Im going to try and enjoy it and hopefully once im there ill be fine and wonder what I was worried about

Hope you enjoy it. Definitely no embarrassing u undies.

For my sister's wedding, her other bridesmaid and I were in a bridal store trying on dresses and from the changing cubical next to me for the first dress we were trying on I heard the other bridesmaid shout "oh no, I'm wearing bambi knickers!". We were all in stitches! Hilarious!

    Hi,

I just picked my dress yesterday, was shopping in Glasgow also :) what shops are you going to? I got my dress in Berketex bride and also went to Sarah Louise Bridal. My best advice is wear a strapless bra and wear clothes with are easy to change in and out of. Dress shopping is totally different from other shopping. I can't describe the feeling you get when you try them on. Its amazing and you'll only get to do it once in your life and you never know you might find the perfect dress right away :) mines was one of the first few I tried on, I tried on lots of others but kept going back to the same one.

Thanks you ladies you have made me feel so much more relaxed about going now.

I know lol I didnt expect to find my dress so fast and was going to go round them all but I couldnt see past the first dress, everything I tried on I subconsciously compared to it so decided there was no point in keeping looking. I wasn't as keen on Sarah Louise Bridal, the shop was freezing cold, the woman didnt seem as if she enjoyed her job and the dresses were more expensive but didnt look as good as other places. Thats just the impression I got but there was another bride in for a fitting and she looked stunning though. If you find a dress you love in there I wouldnt let the atmosphere put you off. It just wasnt for me. I don't know about Angelic Lamont, I looked at the website but never went in. Thats a really good price for the dress you seen. The price of things is scary. I was in to try mine a few times, a couple of the days I went in were sales days and was offered a good discount but didnt want to rush into a decision so ended up paying a little dearer in the ended. It's the price of tiaras and veils that scare me lol

    Do you live in Glasgow?

Yeah the accessories are scary, I was looking at one £80 ive had to adjust my expectations slightly.

Did you have to make an apt for the shop you go your dress?

I live in Coatbridge so not far from Glasgow, what about yourself?

I had to make an appointment but it was really easy to get one, I then had to change the time and they were really flexible :) They said you can go back as many times as you like and take as many people as you want with you to see the dress. So for example if you don't take the bridesmaid initially you can go back in again to show them it. Also you can pay an extra £65 and they'll remeasure you nearer to the wedding whereas before they measured you when you bought the dress, ordered it in that size and done the alterations nearer to the wedding. Definitely worth the money :)

Elizabeth, that Mori Lee dress is gorgeous! Think i may have a look at that website, having a quick glance its the kind of style im after!

I am exactly the same, i can not stand clothes shopping! The only person that can take me on a successful clothes shop is the H2B, but thats out of the question for wedding dresses! Think i will take my 2 Bridesmaids and ask them to be brutally honest with me.

Reading this has put me at ease a little. Thanks everyone!

The best advice I was given was to wear granny pants/shorts - the assistant will be helping you climb in and out of dresses and doesn't necessarily want to see you flashing a thong at her each time.
