Hi all. I am a newbie and have been wedding planning over the summer. We have quite a tight budget and I have taken the decision that hair and make up will have to be DIY as we would prefer to spend the money on other parts if the day.

What would others advise on this? Are you going with a professional or DIY?

    Thanks

    Becky

im going professional for hair and makeup. most people say that professional makeup stays on all day and looks better on photos and i dont want to have to worry about reapplying makeup later on in the day. also i want something different doing with my hair and wouldnt have a clue how to do it myself lol. my makeup is £75 including trial and my hair is £60 including trial x

    I too am going professional.

I am lucky though in the fact that my sister is a hair dresser and the hairdresser I had before my sister qualified is also a friend of my Mums. My Make Up artist is a daughter of someone I used to work with.

I am being charged £140 for hair and that is for me and my SIX Bridesmaids. So £20 a person. The plan with hair though is for my sister to wash, blow dry and straighten everyones' hair the night before so the hairdresser can just come in a style.

My make up quote is £150 again for me and my SIX Bridesmaids so that works out around £21.50 a person.

That's a great price and cheaper than what I've been able to find so far in local area.

I've been tempted to buy some good make-up eg. Mac so that it stays on longer. Don't want to keep stretching budget and thought that DIY make up and hair (sister is trained hairdresser but isn't keen on having to do everyone's hair!) would be an easy save but don't want to regret it later!

I know what you mean about having a sister who is a hairdresser to do everyone. I wouldn't want to put the pressure on my sister, plus she is a Bridesmaid too so would probably like to have her own hair done for once rather than still doing everyone elses. This is why she is prepping everyones' hair the night before so she is still involved too.

Yep, she is a bridesmaid as well so doesn't want hassle but no budget for hair and make up at min and can only stretch if find VERY good deal, which can't find yet! Think we will all end up doing own so pressure isn't on sister! Don't mind doing my own hair and make up but don't want to end up looking same as I do every day!

I am having my hair professionally done £50 including at least 2 trials but I am unsure about make up. I was planning on going to a Clar1ns counter in a department store and having them do my face nicely with a wedding look and then asking for the items used as birthday presents from my mum. But I am concerned that I will spend all day worrying that it needed re-doing and in the morning ill spend all morning faffing. I dont usually wear make up though unless im going out for an evening etc and I dont want to look too overdone. I had a quote £75 including a trial so I just need to decide.

Think I need to have another look around for hair prices, I must just have looked at the pricier ones!
I am happy doing my own make up but it is just it staying on and looking good for photos. May go to a make up counter and ask them for make up trial and see what need to buy. A friend ended up spending over £100 on wedding make up to do herself, which she could have used for a professional but she was happy as then she had lots of good make up to keep using for the rest of the year!

Yes thats a good plan. I have quite a lot of the aforementioned make up and I have been to their counter in House of F in Manchester and they are good at explaining and doing. I was hoping that I would really only need a new well matched foundation and a YSL mascara and I could make use of the eyeshadows I have.
I like you am very torn!

I think doing your own hair and make up is fine, I am not having a make up artist as i feel i can do my make up well enough and it will last all day. if your sister is happy to do just your hair for the day.. i would let her do it..

I am having a hairdresser for my hair on the day.

There are lots of hints n tips on the internet if you look around for how to make ur make up stay all day.
I use MAC make up and i would say it is by far the best invest i have made.. the quality is amazing and it will stay all day..

Thanks, really think investing in MAC will be way to go on make and getting trial from them will help me know what to buy.
Will have to look around on hair but again don't mind doing own hair and if it saves money from our massively diminished budget them I can cope with that!

I'm really lucky, two of our close friends are hairdressers and another, who is best mans girlfriend, is a make up artist. They are doing mates rates so will be quite cheap.

It may sound crazy but how about contacting your local college and using students who will be qualifying and have plenty of trials. They would be grateful of the experience and will only charge you a small amount for products they use xx

I was only going to have my hair done, but i found a good deal so am having the air brush make up. I had a trial before booking and it really did last all day. My friend wne to the mac counter and ended up spending £200 on make up for the day. Fine she can then use it again, but budget wise i wasnt comfortable with that.

I did my cousins make up for her wedding, whilst we just used what she had having another person do it gave her a different 'look' for the day, she was very happy.

There are lots of options, but i personally would have to have at least my hair done as i am useless with it!

Professional hair but DIY makeup. I've been doing my own makeup for years so I know what suits me and what makes me feel comfortable, anybody who did my makeup always made me feel like a clown, no offence to them, I'm just picky. I spoke to someone in a high street makeup shop about what colours would suit me with my colour theme and I have some pretty good ideas.

Still deciding on my hair, for my make-up I'm going to visit the benefit counter and get them to do a look for me and then purchase goodies to re-create it, that way I get a load of lovely benefit goodies in the bargain, plus I know benefit works well on me as I used it to do my own make-up for a boudoir shoot and the make-up on the photos looked awesome.

Going for a mixture... I'm having full works done by professionals... Hair, makeup, manicure, tan/moisturise, nails, pedicure, eyebrows, massage ... my bridesmaids are mostly doing their own makeup except one sister having makeup done by m@c pr0 and another sister having her hair professionally blow dried on the day. Best mate BM has short hair and does her own and is always tanned as shes a commercial airline pilot so abroad a lot so sunbathes! My other BM is H2Bs sister and is a natural beauty and good at her own style with ease so leaving her to choose but she says she wants to do it herself.

I'm gonna ask if the girls will wear a certain colour nail polish but will not be imposing it!

If I couldn't have a professional do my hair and makeup, I would have a friend do it. Knowing me I'd be to stressed on the day to be in charge of it.
