I am in the same boat - I have started emailing shops to see what sizes they stock. Tend to look for stockists of Sonsie, D'zada, callista n sincerity plus. I am going for my first look in a couple of weeks - v nervous. Good luck to u :)

My mum (size 20) went for a Benjamin Roberts dress, which was a regular style dress just made to order to her size. There's no need to limit yourselves to certain ranges or styles. The downside was she didn't get to try on the sample dress, but she asked me to wear it & move about in it, and she could visualise it and was happy. The seamstress in the shop made a panel for the back to hide the bra strap, and it matched fabric and style perfectly. Just don't freak out when they tell you what size dress you need - mum needed a size 28 apparently, but then again, I tried on the sample 3 sizes "too big" for me & it barely fit my hips!!

Why not find one you like and get the woman who cant be named make them for you, im a size 22 and had mine made to measure and its perfect all the ones they tried on me in shops were 16 or 18 if lucky and it made me feel down but once I knew the style I wanted I ordered it and it was best thing I did x

My first wedding dress (never worn, escaped that marriage phew!) was a size 22 (you are always a size or two smaller than the bridal gown size) and it was beautiful. A romantica of devon, satin with gorgeous embroidery cost me £800 and they only had a stock size of 14 for me to try on. Most places will lace you into almost anything that you want to try on and you can visualise what it will look like with that perfect fit. Dont be stressed about it, at the end of the day, you are going to find that dress, and look beautiful on your wedding day!! I am going this weekend for my appointments, and I dread taking my clothes off in front of people, but I know I am going to find that perfect dress even if it is a larger curvier size. xxx
PS and now I have seen the link on here to try and sell your wedding dresses, I think I might go list my old one!!
I love the mori lee dresses on the curvier brides they look amazing. Which is why I'm going to she who can't be named with the style I like x

I was a nervous wreck about trying on dresses I'm a 20/22 and I went to a designer day at my local wedding dress shop with no intention of trying on just wanted to look at styles, shapes colours etc. Anyway the lady showed my silhouette the new plus size range from romantica and I loved them, ended up trying them all on and deciding on one there and then :) x Good luck with the dress hunt :) x
Back with my 1st love after 12 years apart.
Not letting go this time :) x

I so hear you Kat - I'm upset about this myself as I've always wanted to loose weight but I struggle so much... Some of the reason why we aren't getting married for so long (not all the reasons I can assure) is because I won't fit into any dresses at all and I know I wouldn't be happy on our wedding day until I loose what I want to let alone letting a photographer near me! I am refusing to try on dresses because a) they won't fit, I know this for a fact and b) emotionally it won't help me to get depressed about pretty dresses I can't try on and having people looking down their noses at me. Although I haven't told my fiancé, I am practically in tears at the thought of trying on dresses.. I go around with her so that she can get ideas of dresses but sometimes I find it so hard because she is so slim and beautiful but she is able to take something off the rack and it fit enough to get an idea of things yet here I am all fat and ugly not able to fit into anything barely getting a leg into an entire dress, I really do wonder what she sees in me sometimes! Anyway, going off track a bit but when me and the OH have gone shopping they have all told her and us that ignore the sizes they use in the shops because it doesn't correlate at all when it comes to wedding dresses as they use a completely different system - Not helpful!! Also, if you look online I have found many places doing plus size dresses. I know there is a place in Manchester and can get the name of it if you would like? I really hope you get the dress you want huni, every bride deserves to look stunning on their wedding regardless of size and I am sure you will :) xxx

I adore the julietta dresses by mori lee, I dont think the model looks 'large' in any of the dresses I think she looks gorgeous with curves to die for. Ive tried on mori lee dresses and the structure in them is brilliant hun. If you go on the mori lee website and use the contact us page they will email you with local stores that carry the julietta range. Good luck hun hope you find your dream dress xx Love your dress LMC its stunning xx

Thanks HappyBunny - I have found a shop local to me that stocks Julietta! x

there are some dresses that are made especially for bigger girls. i got a gorgeous dress that wasn't made for the bigger bride but i tell you something it looks better on larger women than on smaller one!
just ring the shops and ask what sizes they stock. i went to a bridal shop that specifically stocked only larger sizes so they are out there!

and also they should have a wide ranges of sizes also i dont think its fair when you see a dress you love and its eiether too small or too big! xx
CommentAuthorFionaR41
hi, i lost weight and when i got my dress i ended up with a size 20 - i was convinced i could fit into a size 14/16 but as i had put on nearly all the 3 stone i had lost there was no way those sizes would fit. !!! ... i got mine for the port of free in h0rns3a . they had some lovely bigger desses and the lady in the shop said it didnt matter what size i ended up with it was the look that mattered when it was on. looking in the wedding mags on sale there are quite a few ranges for larger ladies.
I do think the usual shops should stock larger sizes rather than the standard 12/14 that they all seem to have. Years ago i went to a wedding show and some ladies were stepping out of the changing rooms with the backs fastened with rubberbands - not the look people want to see when walking past & cant imagine it would give a true idea of how it would look on the day.

Thanks girls I Iove my dress! Funnily enough I wasn't convinced when I saw it on the hangar....
I think all shops should carry bigger sizes as its easier to put a skinny Minnie in a big dress with clamps to make it fit then to have a larger girl who can't get one over her b••bs! - that's from experience and it's a good job I can laugh about it!

You'll find a lot of bridal shops have a dedicated section to bigger sizes. A lot of designers can also make their dresses for bigger sizes. I was talking to my dress maker about this, out of curiosity, as a lot of the mainstream dresses in the shop were between the sizes 10-16, she boasted how she managed to get a size 20-22 bride into a size 16 dress. They are clever like that and can do some tweaking if you want to try on the dress.

this is my mori lee jullietta dress
when I went shopping for dresses I didn't even look at this to start with as it looked quiet a slim fit on the hips and thighs (which are my biggest area)and I was looking for more of an a line to hide them but the assistant got the dress out and made me try it on and I have to say I fell in love its a little on the big side and really skimmed my bad areas and actually needs taking in a little on the hips and thighs. I think its worth trying the plus size ranges of designer dresses on has then cut them all better I couldn't even get a size 20 on over my hips and thighs in a normal designer range x

Hi Kat, Im a size 28 and tried on sample dresses in sizes waaaay to small but it did give me an indication of what suited me. I discovered a sweetheart neckline and a line gown were the most flattering and if I chose a bodice with pleated diagonal drapery it knocked inches off me. So that's what I kept in mind when I had a look online for dresses. I ended up picking Venus by Bonny. There were two similar gowns but I preferred the bodice of one and skirt of another so decided to have my dream dress made by She Who Must Not Be Named and it came out perfect! Why not do the same? See what suits you and then have the best of what you tried on made into one perfect dress. xx

Hi i'm in the same boat to, searching the net and heading out to bridal shops to look for the perfect dress, i know what dress i want but can't find it in the shops. So thinking i might have to buy it online which i'm panicking about :-/ in case the sizes are different to ''normal'' clothing. Hope you have some luck soon at finding your dress :-) x

completely sympathise with all of you ladies. I am a size 22/24 and dreaded the thought. Did NOT want to go to a "normal" bridal shop and feel even fatter than i already felt. So i too went to 2 specialist plus size shops, and it was the BEST experience of my life. I was made to feel like a proper princess and it's amazing when some of the dresses are TOO big for you!!
I would hate the thought of being held in at the back and trying to imagine what it looked like as i don't know about you, i just don't think that really works.
If you can find a couple of specialist shops to go to, then DO! I drove almost 2 hours to go to one of mine and it was worth it! They had a large selection of Sonsie dresses and they are amazing (great corsets), but all of the dresses in plus size shops ahave plus size brides in mind so don't stick to one designer etc, just try them all on! What i thought would suit me (something with sleves to hide the monsters that are my arms) really didn't and in fact made my arms look 10 times bigger!
The main piece of advice i'd say is to just ENJOY IT!!!!! Enjoy a few hours of it being just about you, not all your guests or your H2B, just YOU!! I'd try wedding dresses on every day of the week if i could, i loved it! I tried on about 20 dresses in total!
The shops i went to were in Essex and one in Catford (London, they also now have a branch in Beckenham).
Chin up - it's supposed to be fun!! xxx

glad i've been of help! Don't dread it, embrace it!! I'd be surprised if you don't love it by the end of your appointment!! You've got to be a bit selfish and take some time for you in this whole process!
