Morning all! Just thought I would share a little trick with you!

When h2b started fishing for ideas as to what kind of engagement ring I wanted I said I would far rather have a bigger sparkle than real diamonds. So my ring is still 18ct white gold but the stones are zirconia. I got engaged in September and when I have been going to try on wedding rings - I've noticed how dull my ring looked.

I decided to clean it and it has come up so sparkly and gleaming its amazing!!

All I did was add 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate soda to a small bowl of warm water then dropped the ring in the bowl for about 5 mins. I then wet a toothbrush and put some bicarbonate powder in it and rubbed the ring gently all over. Then rinsed with warm water and voila!!

It's gleaming! And it's safe to do on all rings and stones :)

Thanks for the tip. I was only looking at mine yesterday and thinking that it is already looking duller. I was thinking that once I put a wedding ring next to it, it would really show up at being a different colour.

Will try this out. Thank you!

I do the same but with neat washing up liquid. I do it every few months. I have an 18ct white gold for 2 years and dosnt even need replating yet!

Great tip thank you! I've had an 18ct white gold ring for nearly 4 years, never been cleaned! I know sounds bad but I have never notice how dull it was, until it goes anywhere near my engagement ring that is! Which is also 18ct white gold, will try this! x

I've never thought of cleaning my engagement ring, as I always take it off at night, when cooking, cleaning, in the bath etc.... it still looks a bit dull though. On my hen do I went for a swim in the hotel pool and forgot I was wearing my ring, only realised when I got out and noticed how shiny it looked!

Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)

be careful with the brush though...not too hard.

I clean mine in a egg-cup of neat vodka, then polish it with a gold cloth - comes up with the most amazing sparkle :)

I just use a toothbrush and brush gently, gorgeous sparkle, then hubby comes along and straight away presses his finger pad on it and ruins it!

Whereas platinum and diamond are both pretty resilient, I'm going to take mine to be professionally cleaned ... the only chemicals I'll put near it is the handwash I use!!! Girls...be careful with gold especially higher carat golds as they are soft and can scratch easily. Platinum displaces so moves around but never falls off if that makes sense!

I used to be a jeweller and loved cleaning peoples engagement rings, seeing the looks on their faces when they saw the difference from before was always very satisfiying. there are a few things you can do to keep your rings looking gorgeous for your day and beyond :

Any white gold jewellery is plated with rodium, this is the plating which over time can rub away ( although easily replated) things like hair spray, perfume and handcremes can make your ring lose its sparkle much quicker so if possible always remove the ring before using these types of cosmetics.

Using a soft brush is a must , too hard and you risk movement in the setting and no one wants to lose their stone ! Remember to clean the ring from behind the setting too as this is where the light hits the stone and reflects all that gorgeous sparkle.

Platinum can be buffed by any repitable jeweller ( many for free) and that gets rid of surface scratches, often if your wedding ring shopping some gentle hints will get your ring cleaned for from the sales staff :) Although if your ring is white gold buffing is a no go due to the plating it will turn a yellow ish hue not what ou want next to your shiney new wedding band.

You can also buy small polishing cloth's which are great for that last minute clean :) xx
