Hopefully! September 2011 we'll be looking at buying our first home together! We still live at home with the parents at the moment! However I think the price we are looking at paying was under the old stamp duty figure anyway!

Just a word of warning if you are buying with someone else you both have to be first time buyers and you cannot have owned property anywhere in the world! I have a pair of clients who had hoped to benefit but they miss out as although he is a first time buyer she isn't.
It ONLY applies to first time buyers.

As long as neither of you have owned it outright so if you have been living in rented accommodation you should be fine. You also have to intend to live in the property as your main residence!!

Quoting from the official guidance that has been issued by HMRC:
"The purchaser or purchasers must intend to occupy the property as their only or main residence"
and then again later
"The purchaser must be a person who intends to occupy the property as his or her main residence".
It's basically an attempt to bring help first time buyers get on the property ladder an to get them back into the market in the hope that this will stimulate the market and get it moving again.

I got lucky, I bought mine at the end of last year before they changed the stamp duty threashold so i didnt have to pay on mine :)

We had a rush of people trying to complete before Christmas so as to avoid stamp duty and it was a bit of a nightmare for us as we were sooooo busy!
