I'm getting married next may and haven't started looking at dresses yet, when I got engaged I had this big plan to get to my ideal weight before I try any on, I started off really well and the initial weight dropped off but I've maintained since xmas and struggling to stick to the diet/exercise. I know that I should start looking but i'm too ashamed to even go into the bridal shops :-(

I think it's time to just bite the bullet and try on dresses you may find it isn't as bad as you think. Actually, I'm pretty sure you'll be pleasantly surprised. Maybe just a low key appointment just for you will get you in the mood for dress buying? Feeling the way you do now I would suggest not bringing an entourage to your first appointment.

How about looking online if you feel uncomfortable going into shops?

I had the same plan hun, dont worry your not the only one.

I was petrified of going in, and i mean seriously. the thought alone was pure dread not excitement. and if you knew me you truly would understand but eventually made an appointment, mainly because i knew i had to and had to have at least 7-8months leaway for making/alterations etc.
I was nearly in tears walking up to the shop... however once i was in there, was completely different, was swept away, the most amazing experience.
I couldnt believe i was trying on dresses, i still had a good 2 stone to go. I'm still about 1/2stone - 3/4 stone off my goal but still.
I ordered my dress 2 sizes smaller than the one i was trying on. i thought the shop one was going to be too small but turns out my measurements there and then fit the size below and with 2 stone to go, they ordered me the one below that.

Trust me, if i can do it you can do it too! you still have a good couple of months ahead of you before you really do need to start going on but if i was you, get online start looking around and take it from there. you really will be pleasantly surprised i can assure you!!!
As sarah suggested, maybe go by yourself? or with 1 other person for moral support, ill come along if you want me to!! honestly it wont be as bad as your thinking it will...

coming from me, i should know! i still hate changing rooms and shops now, and dont want to go holiday clothes shopping still but of all the things now i cant wait to get back and try my dress on again!!!

    xx

Thanks ladies, I've got a few days off the end of May so i'll maybe go then, and only with my mum, i'm more worried about the sales assistants judging me.

trust me they have seen anything and everything and are not there to judge. for me, i voiced my concerns and out right asked them to be honest and as didnt no exactly what dress i was after etc they found ones that suited my shape and hid the bits i didnt like and showed off the good bits etc. theyve seen all shapes and sizes and go through it on daily basis. to be honest they wont see much of you as you clamber into the dress they're pretty much holding it up for anyway! x

the want to sell you a dress, they won't be judging you - it's their job to make you feel beautiful so you say yes to the dress x

dont get yourself stressed out hun, im v self conscious about strangers seeing my bod... but a few dresses later and you'll be standing proud and used to it! the excitement of getting into a dress tht is so pretty will take your mind off of the fact that you're in your undies and not at the "perfect" weight!!

I was same, hate looking at naked me lol but my bloke bought me some nice undies so I wore them and felt nicer. I was aloo paranoid about them getting me in dresses but it really wasn't a problem. It wasn't as scary as I imagined and I actually enjoyed it!
I would however be wary of ordering a down side unless you know for def you will lose as my dress can be altered down sizes after doing in but not up sizes but that may be dependent on the shop?

dont worry, its their jobs to make you feel special and comfortable, buy some nice new undies, get your hair done and you will feel a million dollars! i went to school with one of the girls and told them to excuse the granny panties, and she told me that some girls have actually gone to try dresses on with no knickers on!!!!! i was gobsmacked! so dont worry theres worse out there than you can imagine!

I agree with the others. I was dreading it but loved it in the end. There are so many styles of wedding dresses which is great because there are dresses to suit all shapes and sizes. I'm pretty self conscious but when I found my dress I felt so confident. I bet you'll have a great time :) keep us posted xxx

I have a very small frame and I was nervous at first trying these dresses on. I was worried that I would look like a teenage pageant contestant rather then a bride. But once the dress maker got to know my shape and taste she found all these beautiful dresses that suited me really well. Her suggestion was to chose a dress you like or think will suit you and get your mum or who ever is with you to chose dress styles you wouldn't necessarily think about, that was how I found 'The Dress' :)

I finally went on Saturday, I honestly do not know what I was so worried about, the sales assistants were all great and were picking out different styles that they thought may suit my shape better and I totally agreed with them. Actually looking forward to going to the next few shops and determined to get the dress ordered by end of August :-) Think i'm finally getting into the wedding spirit :-)
