    Hi everyone

So my mum gave me my granddad wedding band (he passed away before I was born) so I can have it melted down into a band for me! Been to the jewellers and all is possible and cheaper than buying lol. I thought it was a really nice idea!

Then when I told my h2b, mother-in-law to be they thought it was 'superstitious' as my mum used it as her wedding ring but her and my dad split up, hence the reason I have it.

Thought I would ask everyone on here what they think? Is it tempting fate? I believe in making your own luck but just threw me off when they said that!

    Thanks everyone!!

The way I see it, you are taking something 'flawed' (in it's memory) and altering it to re-make it. Sort of giving it new memories.
I dunno, that sounds a bit soppy now but I hope u know what I mean...

I wouldn't worry as you are changing it to be your own future

    Xxx

Will you be doing every superstition then??
Trying on the Wedding ring before you marry is supposed to be bad luck??

I really don't believe in all that stuff!!!

I wont wear my grandma's crown type thingy she had as she wore it for both of her failed marriages and my mum wore it for her 1st marriage as well which didn't work out.. Personally, I have a major superstition against 2nd hand things lol.. xxx

i pick and choose what im superstitious about, i know its all a load of tosh either way though lol, but if you end up attaching negative associations to it, you're not gunna end up wanting it. So I think you just need to decide whether it bothers you that it has come from a failed marriage, but i assume your grandads was a successful one. A ring won't make any odds to how your marriage will turn out, otherwise by default, your mums should have worked as that came from a successful marriage (at least, i assume it does?), or whether you like the fact that it is now becoming an heirloom, there will never be 100% happy memories attached to heirlooms the further they go down the line, so this could just be your time to attach better memories to it again

Why are you getting it melted down and not just altered btw? Ive got my grandmas ring and all I did to that was resize it

thanks for all the replies guys!

think im goin to have it done as i really like the idea of it, i never met my grandad but hear such wonderful things about him, would be great for him to be a part of my life! and as you say it becomes an heirloom almost! my engagement ring is my h2b great grandmas engagement ring and i just love the thought of keeping all the family spirt alive :)

velcro- its far to thick for my little hands (i have tiny hands) its 5mm thick and the thickness that suited me in the shop was 2.5mm!!

I, like Velcro, pick and choose what am superstitious about and some things like about seeing the dress before the wedding, am superstitious about, but things like seeing other parts of the outfit, trying on ring before married, and even groom turning to face bride as she walks down aisle is meant to be bad luck, which i think is a lot of rubbish and you make your own luck, not a superstition. I think if you're okay with using it then go for it, technically, you're melting it down anyway and turning it into a new ring, so a fresh start really xxx

No I don't believe in superstitions and I think it's a brilliant idea that u want to use this piece of jewellery to make it something for you on your big day! If we were to believe all superstitions then no one would get married on a Saturday as according to superstitions every other day of the week brings u some luck in an area of life apart from Saturday where there is no luck at all....and since most ppl marry on a Saturday I think they are a load of tosh!x

I think it's your grandad's ring so whatever happen when your mom had it doesn't really matter. Can't wait to see how your ring turns out x

You could have it melted down into the new ring and have it blessed by a minister or someone spiritual to cleanse the ring of any karma that might be attached xx

Will you end up with spare ring? I just remember a lad I went school with whose dad has his wedding ring made into 3 (very thin) rings and gave each if his kids one.... Just wondering if you could utilise what is left over somehow?
