    Hi Ladies....

I don't see any point in spending huge amounts on a suit, when H2B wont ever wear it again, he hates suits. I have found one on the bay from China it is £38.99 plus postage. The postage states that it is only £4.75 however I'm unsure of "customs charges". I have never bought anything outside of the UK before and was wondering if you ladies could shed some light please.

I have posted the link on my wall as feel that it seems to be good value for money. It is one where the trousers are stupidly long and states you may need to hem them yourself but that is easy enough especially with that magic hem stuff that you stick on and fold lol.

Would just really like to know if there is likely to be customs charges and if so how much I would be looking at. I don't need a shirt as he has one, and I'm already looking into ties so they are no problem just the jacket and trousers are needed.

    Thanks lovelies!

Items over fifteen pound you'll have to pay vat, so an additional 20 percent. I believe as the value is less than 135 you won't be paying customs charges.

So I'd estimate total charges about eight quid xx

so if the suit is £38.99
    postage is £4.75
I would actually be paying £63.54
    (£46.79 for the suit, plus £16.75 postage/courier)?

vat & customs would only be on the price of the suit as written on the customs form, since it's 38.99 it shouldn't be too bad.

Yeah, around that, but I'm not sure if you would get hit by the courier charges - depends who the supplier uses. A friend of mine ordered some dresses from the states thinking she was going to get a good deal, however she got a bit of a shock when she was notified that she had to pay nearly £200 vat and customs! There are websites that help you calculate customs charges xx

If you buy goods online from outside the EU for delivery to the UK, you'll have to pay Customs Duty and Import VAT on top of the purchase price if the goods are above a certain value - though Customs Duty is waived if the amount of duty payable is £9 or less.
Some Internet sellers outside the EU have arrangements with the UK whereby you pay them the VAT that's due on the goods you're ordering. They then pay the VAT to their postal authority - which in turn pays it to HM Revenue & Customs. Note that these sellers must be authorised to do this. They'll have a special number that will be on the Customs Declaration. The declaration should also carry a message saying 'Import VAT pre-paid'. When this arrangement is used you won't be charged any import VAT or a Royal Mail handling fee when you get your parcel. Note that if the above procedures aren't followed properly you could end up losing the goods.
In addition you'll have to pay UK Excise Duty on any alcohol or tobacco products. Cigarettes and hand rolling tobacco must also bear UK health warnings and fiscal marks, and containers of spirits that are larger than 35cl must bear a UK duty stamp.

I ordered lots of bits and pieces from the site with a light in the b0x - had no idea I would need to pay VAT.
Delivery van driver also wanted £5 admin fee from me (and VAT) for paying it on my behlaf and wouldn't deliver without me giving him cash at the door

Have you had a look around actual stores hun? I'm only asking because Matalan do suits cheaply and M&S have suits for sale for £59 (I believe the homestore that is british do these too) so they might work out cheaper, plus he could try them on first so there would be no need for you to do anything to them. And yes, you wont know any charges until the item is here in the UK, so you could be paying double that! It all depends on what the company put down as the worth of the product, so it isn't necessarily based on the price that you pay. For example you could pay £40 when it is marked down as half price, but the value of the package would be £80 xxx
