I've been going round and round in circles trying to pick a DJ! We haven't been to too many wedding/parties recently that have had a DJ, so I'm struggling to make any decisions. How do I know if a DJ is good? I've got about 15 quotes- all ranging from 150-800- what makes them so different? I don't mind cheesy music, just don't want to end up with cheesy chat- think peter kay - lol

Make appointments so u can listen to their stuff, it could range from the quality of their sound systems, to how they set themselves up, how long u have them for etc...

I just asked the venue who they recommended and went with them. X x

Mine was easy, the venue has a recommended DJ, who my dad happens to know so when we got a quote he knocked £50 off the price.

Most venue's have a recommended DJ, so ask your venue? We went with our venue's dj as it makes things so much easier xxx

I had an offer pop up on my wall saying that there was a 20% discount to PU members for bookings taken before the end of the year, so I contacted them to see if they would play the kind of mixed playlist we wanted and to get a quote. From day one they were awesome and they called a week before the reception to confirm our playlist and the 'definitely don't play, under any circumstances, no matter how much someone begs you' list LOL! And they were fantastically priced. the DJ the company sent was lovely and played everything we wanted and nothing we didn't :) So, in short, have you tried contacting companies that advertise on this site?

we were quite lucky that we know 2 pub djs and 1 dj that does it as a part time job. we went to a 40th and the part time dj was fab, playing all the music that me and h2b like plus others that everyone liked and the deciding factor was that he does karaoke too (which i love). go to gigs/parties/pubs where they are playing to get an idea. another idea is asking guests to write fav songs on their rsvp to give to the dj-no dj can go wrong with the music then :-) xx

I don't envy you ! I was so glad when ours came with the venue! The one thing you should ask is are they prepared to play from a list of does and don't you provide - if not - veto them! Also, ask if they are prepared to download any songs they don't currently have - ask if they charge for this. x

When we picked our dj, we got a lot of different quotes, and like you they varied a lot in price. We didn't go with the cheapest (about £150) because it just seemed too cheap - and also the website didn't have much information on at all.
The dj we booked in the end was reasonable (about £200/£250 or so) but his website was fantastic as well. It listed testamonials from previous clients, photos from parties he'd worked at, venues listed that he regularly worked, his blog, again with pics.
He also listed his experience (15yrs), showed his insurance certificates and equipment used - and also if we could have a say in what was played, and if so, to what extent.
He also had an online enquiry form, so we could see what dates were booked etc. Oh and another important thing - his address was on the website (not just a mobile number like some dj's). We felt more reassured with this, as it's always better to have a physical address if you're paying out this amount of money lol.
We finished up giving him a playlist with 'must play' tracks and 'desirable' tracks - with the rest up to him, based on our tastes. And he didn't disappoint on the night - even getting most of the guests up for a dance (even ones that we wouldn't have expected to lol). He wasn't cheesy either, with loads of voice overs, but still managed to create a good atmosphere.

We are using a guy we have seen at 2 other weddings and at various wedding fairs in our area, maybe go to a few venues and see if they suggest anyone? Does you venue have a list of suppliers they recommend?

Hi SaraA20,
You might like to read my thread called "Words Of Advice Before Booking A DJ..." as this covers most, if not all, the things you should be looking for when requesting quotes from DJ's.
Hope it helps.

Scott.

hey hey scott
Sara i would say the best way is by recommendation .....always have a meeting with a possible DJ and see if you are on the same wave length , ours was superb
Sara, very good advice from the above Mod ;-) Pre-event/Pre-booking meetings are the best way to find out if the DJ is really for you.
Many DJ's will include a pre-event meeting within their quoted price, but will normally charge for a pre-booking meeting as the booking is not definite, so they charge for their travel expenses and time.
