Hi We are getting married in July 2014 and its in a Catholic Church (hopefully). When should we apply for a marriage licence, do we have to register our prospective wedding date anywhere official like with the council for example? If we have to do this then when should we do it?
My fiancé was married before but he forgot as it was his ex that booked the registry office.

    Ok thanks!

We are also having a Catholic wedding. We are getting marreid September 2013. We met with the priest a couple of months ago, and he was very helpful. He penciled in the date into the church diary. Apparently you need to do a notification of marriage with the registrary office at your local council within 12 months of your wedding. You cannot do this any sooner. This currently has a fee of £35 per person, and you have a 20minute interview done individually.
Within 6 months of your wedding, no earlier, you need to obtain a baptism certificae from the church you were baptised. Apparently each church updates the records of when you had your communion, confirmation etc, even if it was at a different church. Sometimes the records have not been updated, so 6 months is probably the best time to apply, incase you need to go chasing round different churches to get your details correct!
You also need to visit a solicitor, to sign off a form (can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, but i will look it up when i get home tonight, and let you know) which apparently they should only charge you £5 for.
If you are getting married in 2014, you don't need to worry about that just yet, but i would visit the church you wish to get married to as soon as possible. My mum was under the impression you didn't need to book too far in advance, but we went 12 months before we wanted to get married, and the couple of dates we wanted were already booked up, so we had to change to fit around the church.

There are 2 churches my Fiancé has suggested we get married in. One in particular is his favourite, and the other one was the church his mother always attended. Now I have suggested we get married in his mothers church but he wants the other one more. I guess he might feel this way because his mum died a few years ago and it might upset him on the day.

Anyway thank you for the advice and omg there is so much more to do now :-)

No problem! That's the way i feel at the moment! I've got the church and venue booked, but nothing else. We have our appointments for the notification at the registrary office on 10th December, but when they said interview, that set me off worrying i might give the wrong answers (we live together, so anything they ask, if i don't know, i never will!!!) . My plan is to wait for the january sales and see what bargains i can get then, and start full steam ahead then!

Let me know if you need to know anything else - we are going to see the priest again next month, and i could put your questions to him as well :-)

I don't know exactly! I was too busy trying to dodge the priest's request for me to join the choir, that i wasn't listening properly. I'll pull the envelope out tonight, and let you know!

usually the vicor or the priest would do it all and you pay them as they are a registrar in their own right and they have to read your bands out in church as apposed to them being posted in the registry office.

Depends where you are - I found out why the wedding coordinator at our venue was so insitant for us to call the registry office as soon as possible to book the registrar - in Liverpool this can be done up to two years in advance!! I thought we could only give 12 months notice too, but I was wrong!
I went online and completed a form saying who, where and when. So although we still need to go in & see them and fill more forms in, the date has been booked with our names.

If you want to get married in a catholic church I would speak to your priest as soon as possible as your H2B has been married before they might not marry you. So I would speak to them first. I know that in my church they wouldnt marry you. Im not getting married in a church as my H2B isnt religious but we will have a blessing.

With Catholic churches they can be very funny with you marrying at a church other than the one of your parish and also a lot of them wont marry anyone who has been married before, so first thing you should do is get in touch with you parish priest and the priest of your chosen church as they both have to agree for you to be able to marry in another church and then they should be able to tell you where to go from there xxx
