I have had the idea that I could have 9 or 10 smaller cakes, 1 for each table. I could have these placed in the centre of the tables to act as a table centre piece, I am only having a buffet meal as all my guests are expected to arrive in the evening (I'm having a small immediate family only ceremony the week before). Ok so my question is- should each cake be of a different type or flavour? There will be 7 people seated at each table so each cake will serve 7 and each table will be provided with a cake knife and desert plates.
A cake shop nearby does some really lovely inexpensive cakes about the size I want and I'm so tempted to do this. I'm not a big fan of wedding cup cakes so I thought this would be a good idea. :-)

Ok I know that once the cakes have gone there is no centre pieces but this idea I like as I've no taste in decor and I would find dressing the centre of my tables a daunting task!

If this is what you want, go for it :) You could have different flavours for different tables, but everyone will only have a piece of one cake so there's no need to have different flavours if you don't want xxx

I was thinking of having different cakes because it might be a talking point between guests and its a bit of variety in colour too I suppose.

I'm so quick to change my mind but for once I think this idea will stay :-) A local ice cream parlour in the area has been in business for decades and making their own flavour of icecream and its very popular amongst my people and as my fiance's family have never been to my hometown I'm going to serve their ice cream along with the centre piece cakes :-) I feel that finally I'm getting somewhere with planning :-)

Oooooh Sonya, Im from P'boro too! Please tell me which ice cream parlour, I have been looking for one & did not know we had one here!

Yeah, I think I would go for all one flavour, that way you don't end up with something people don't like. With 7 different flavours you'd be bound to have one that was less popular! Coffee for example !! Yuk! (Ok maybe that's just me! lol) but I think i'd be a bit miffed if I ended up with a flavour I didn't like and I could see different ones round the room!! xx

Ooh I love coffee cake! But yeah maybe I should just stick to flavours that are not so much a hit or a miss. I love carrot cake too but I find that those two types either people love or people hate and there's no inbetween.
So, its down to strawberry gateau, chocolate cake (but not dark chocolate) possibly caramel cake, also they can do a cake with white chocolate. And as my mum, and older aunts and uncles love traditional wedding cake (yuck!) they can all have that. Anyway the cakes out of that bakery are really beautiful and I used to work with one of the owners and I know for a fact I won't get any complaints. Lemon cake is a possibility. No one is allergic to anything and the only diabetic is my dad. Gotta think of a few more varieties of cake, though I'm thinking not Black Forest gateau or anything with cherries as they can also be a hit or a miss. Any one got any ideas of other flavours of cakes??

I went to a wedding where they did this and it was gorgeous.
they was sort of the wedding cake, the decoration and the favour all in one....great idea
I can resist anything but temptation
CommentAuthorMrs-Mouse-2-be
Yeah I was thinking it would cover favours too. Although I think for favours I want to incorporate local things that both of our hometowns are renowned for just to spark a little bit of interest and introduce a bit of my fiance's home to my folks and make him and his family feel at home. My hometown is often nicknamed "Spade town" and he is from Melton, home of the pork pie. Originally I wasn't going to have favours but now I can see the benefit of having them :-)

Oooh orange cake and almond cake :-) good thinking :-) I like a good Victoria sponge too :-)
Last time I tried to bake a cake it cost more than what a shop bought one would cost and all I could taste in bits of it was baking powder so I had obviously not mixed it well even though I thought I had. Fortunately I won't be making my own food at all ha ha I can't cook.

This is a great idea, I'm having different flavours of cake, lemon cake, vanilla cake, chocolate cake and of course fruit for my mother etc. we are having cupcakes but I love your idea x x
CommentAuthorPB
I think its a lovely idea and i like the idea of different flavours/styles of cakes for each table....you could use the cake flavours as your table names even? xxx
CommentAuthorMrs-Mouse-2-be
Steal away :-) Well my cakes are working out to be between £12-£15 each.
The guests at each table will have to cut their own cake. This should get guests interacting with each other and might be good if some guests at certain tables don't know the other guests. I'll just have to remember the side plates, cake knives desert forks and napkins for each table.
I have a question though, I've been looking online to see if any companies can personalise the little icecream spades, but I've not had any joy :-( does anyone know if there are companies who do this?
CommentAuthorMrs-Mouse-2-be
The cake flavours as table names yeah great idea instead of boring old 1, 2 etc yeah thanks Poulton Pride that's a wonderful idea :-)
CommentAuthorGlitterfairy
I think it is a lovely idea to do. I had sweets in bowls so once the sweets were gone so were the centre pieces really. Well the bowl obviously were still there, but they were not the same without the sweets!

Personally I think a vintage stand in the middle holding cupcakes. Not so messy! No cutting and guests love them. I had both cake and cupcakes, and the cupcakes went like hot cakes !! :)
CommentAuthorMrs-Mouse-2-be
I don't like the idea of cupcakes, I prefer the idea of a cake being in the middle and the guests having to interact with each other by cutting it and sharing. The vast majority of my guests will know each other well, but my fiances family wont know anyone apart from themselves so its a good icebreaker I think. Also I'm planning on putting a decorative cover over the cakes and I'm having a jug of cream placed at each table too. Besides there's more value in these cakes and they are working out cheaper than what the same bakery will make cupcakes for so I'm happy. I could always cut the cakes myself before I put the decorative covers on them anyway or my bar staff who are also hotel waiters could come and do it after the meal is served so its no problem.

This is the first time I have heard this idea but it sounds like such a lovely idea!!! We have people on our guest list that dont really eat cake or anything sweet. I was thinking of a couple of homemade cookies as favours and a large cake but hearing this idea sounds so much more fun and different. We are only having a buffet too so it would go with the more casual feel!! The flavours as table names is a lovey idea too xxx I think all those different flavours on each table will be too much and you will always end up with one flavour left on most tables. I would either stick to one flavour for all of them or have a couple of flavours like vanilla and chocolate if you really wanted to offer a choice x
CommentAuthorMrs-Mouse-2-be
I'm really set on one flavour per table and sticking with the cake names as table names. Knowing most of my guests (as most of them are my family) if they don't like their cake they will likely swap their slices but to avoid this I am deliberately ruling out certain flavours like coffee cake, cherry cake and carrot cake etc.
Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, lemon, caramel, orange cake are all staying so I just have to think of four more flavours. Or just two more flavours then repeat two flavours for the top table.
Not everyone likes traditional wedding cake anyway and a lot of it gets wasted so I think I would rather spend less money and have a real talking point between tables than anything else.
CommentAuthorRuthW61
i think this is an ACE idea.. do it how you want its your day! i am struggling with table dec's centres as i have so many ideas but cant decided on what would look good! x
