I need to have my wedding band moulded round m engagement ring So I had a ring company out last week who post it off and make a wax model of my engagement ring the a wax model of my wedding band and can see how they fit together. So then got another ring company yesterday for a different opinion and they make a CAD 3D model of my engagement ring instead and design everything on the computer. She was obviously selling her company as the ring would cost more but was very negative about the wax moulding, saying it could ruin my engagement ring, do I want it dipped in wax, etc.... So now I don't know what to do. Any one had wax models made before? How was it? Did it hurt your ring? Any advice would be great please ladies xxxx

I wouldn't think wax would do any harm. Is it the kissing company? I think they have a specialist on here, so maybe they can help xx

I was going to do this because i have a halo e ring but decided against it as i would sometimes like to wear my wedding band on its own and cldnt because it wld b such an odd shape!!! I dont think wax wld hurt it at all, i spoke to quite a few jewellers and that seems tobe the common practise, even designing it on a comp, they wld still need to take some sort of mould to ensure a correct fit xx

The first company was kissing company and they were good but I'm not keen on posting a 50 year old sentimental ring off in the post so could go to jewellery quarter in town instead but I'm still confused if wax moulding is ok? My ring has diamonds in it and very detailed....

if i am being honest with you, i wouldnt be too happy bout that either!!! Most good quality jewellers can make a ring to match an e ring. have u tried any near u? I have also heard about a company called smooch? I decided to get a diamond band, i quite like the gab between an e ring and a wedding band xx

Yeah that's the kissing company. I think it's a nice idea actually, I was thinking about them because I have quite an unusual shaped engagement ring and couldn't get a wedding ring to fit it but I'm not sure they'll be able to do anything. Xx

My e ring is funny shaped and I used kissing company who provided a cad drawing. I must admit I was very impressed with the service. I felt that a computerised design would give a much better fit than wax bit I would say it is personal opinion.

In terms of sending my ring off they used Recorded delivery and the ring was insured with them

Yeah it was the kissing company.... they didnt offer me the CAD drawing option?! My engagement ring has lots of diamonds in it and quite detailed so dont want the wax sticking to it and ruining the detail but i have never had a bad review on the wax models..... maybe it was the 2nd company finding the negatives so i booked with them. AAARRRGGGHHHH to many decisions !!

    Millz090,
May I clarify what we do for this type of ring as it seems you have not been given the correct information by your Advisor?

The process we use is as follows:

We send your engagement ring to our workshop by fully insured and tracked Special Delivery.
As soon as your ring arrives at our workshop we send you a text to confirm it has arrived safely.
Your ring is then photographed and checked for any loose stones etc
It then goes into our CAD studio where our designers scan it with a 3D laser to produce a virtual copy in the computer.
They then 'print' a hard wax exact copy or your engagement ring and this is what we use to produce the matching wedding ring.
When the CAD design for your wedding ring is complete we email you a very realistic image of the wedding ring and the engagement ring so you can check that the design is exactly what you want.
If you want to change anything we'll do that and send you another CAD image to approve.
Once you are happy with the design we clean and polish your Engagement Ring (including re-plating with Rhodium if its white gold)
Then we send it back to you again by insured and tracked Special Delivery.

We do thousands of these fitted rings every year so we are very confident in the process.

If anyone has any queries about this please don't clutter up the forum as the Mod's prefer us to deal direct with customer service issues. We're not allowe d to give out contact details but you can find them on our Facebook page or our website.

I wouldnt of wanted my e ring dipped in wax either so ur not alone and reading what they have posted about I think that would be ok, can understand that there is worry about teh sentimental fact but if having wedding band made to fit you will have to send it away no matter what and at least it is tracked and tehy let you know when arrives etc x

Thanks for the clarification.... i have looked at so many rings recently im going crazy.

My concerns were the postage as i had to sign to say if it got lost then you wouldn't pay out but just make a replica and apparently it could get lost with Royal Mail or in your factory.... this doesn't cover sentimental value as a family ring passed down. Becuase i have to post my engagement ring to you this was my main concern.
Does my engagement ring go in any wax? My adviser said a wax copy would be made of my engagement ring then a wax copy of my wedding ring yet your email implies my engagement ring wont go in wax but a CAD design made instead?

I think im confused somehow. I very much liked Smooch but this process wasnt explained very clearly.

    Thanks xx

thanks chick, i have only had good reviews too so that doesnt worry me its just 6 weeks without my engagement ring and trusting someone else with it.... i know it sounds silly and i have to do it anywhere but i think i would feel better if i personally handed it to someone maybe?!

I think they scan your ring onto CAD then a laser cuts the wax to the CAD drawing so your ring won't go in any wax at all this is how my partner makes exact copies using CAD at his work though they don't do it into wax.

Hello again. We're really concerned that you weren't given the correct information - can you please call our customer care team and ask for Malcolm. He will explain the process correctly to you.

Your engagement ring doesn't go anywhere near wax. We scan it with a special 3D laser and this gives us a 'virtual' copy inside the computer. We then create an exact 3D copy of your ring in hard wax. We use this wax copy to check the fit of the bespoke wedding ring is perfect.

Regarding losing the ring this is EXTREMELY unlikely and has only happened 3 or 4 times in the last 12 years. When the ring is being worked on it is in a high security room with CCTV and other measures to protect it. It is locked in our vault at all times unless it is being worked on.

We haven't lost a ring for years because we have tightened our procedures up to ensure this never happens. We handle 1000's of rings every year without any problems.

Royal Mail Special Delivery is the safest and most reliable courier service BY A MILE which is why we use them. All of our rings (over 8000 a year) are sent out by this method and we absolutely trust them to deliver. If we weren't 100% confident we wouldn't use them.

As you say, in the very unlikely event that it got lost, we would produce an exact copy of the ring but it is almost impossible for us to lose a ring now. I can't remember the last time we had to do this.

We understand how precious these rings and and we do everything we can to look after them while they are in our care.

Although we say it can take up to six weeks most people get their rings back in 3 - 4 weeks.

Thanks smooch - you have made me feel much better about the whole process. I dont know if your adviser explained it incorrectly or i simply mis-understood the process but we have another appointment with the Jewlerry quarter and will then be making a decision so im going to ask our original advisor to come back and run through everything again so its 100% clear and im confident xxx

So the situation continues.... i phoned company 2 managering director today (not the kissing company) as wanted the price qualifying and also didnt apprichiate her sales rep pushy sales chat and we had a good chat for an hour about everything else apart from rings.... anyway i was quoted wrong, i thought £400 for a gold band was expensive and she has re-done the quote correctly and doing H2B ring for half price as a good will guesture and to thank for me for my feedback. So now i need a proper chat with H2B about what to do as either way i have to post my engagement ring off.... too many decisions?!
