Deffo! I'd be happy to do this...the cake isnt one of the most important things for me, luckily we get ours included with our reception package, but its plain...so we are allowed to take it away decorate it and then take it back... But If I did have to sort our own cake out, I wouldnt be going all out on it! lol x

compared to some other places that specialize in cakes, they seem quite reasonably priced. Plus I know a couple of brides that have had them and said they taste lovely - pretty sure you can order taster packs before you order too! x

I was thinking of just using fresh fruit or flowers, if I'm getting sponge cake. However, if someone convinces me to get fruit cake I'd probably get some edible flowers off the bay.

My brother had an M & S wedding cakes last year and it was lovely! I think a 4 tier cake is about £140 ish, so that's what im getting for mine. It seems pointless spending £300/£400 personally when you can order them for next to nothing. My florist is just putting together some flowers for the top x

I have been looking at cakes from a well known super market too. Ive been shocked by the prices people charge for cakes! and tbh its only going to be eaten so i dont want to waste loads of money on it.

I found a local woman that makes cakes in her spare time and said she'd make a 3 tier, plain white iced sponge cake for £70 and then my mums found a site online and were going to get some royal blue ribbon and string of diamonties to put around each tier then some edible roses for on top. Saves me a few ££££'s

I would love to but we both dont like fruit cake and plus what we are having (were having a two tier cupcake) is only costing us £100 quid so I dont think I would be allowed to spend another £140 on a cake :(

Yes I've been debating getting an m and s cake, tried to order the taster pack but have been unable to. Rang them up and said they couldn't as a new booklet thing is coming out so don't know if they are stopping doing it. Why spend so much money on something that may not all get eaten anyway. If I get one I will just be putting flowers on the top x x

i have seen some brides bought from tesco and decorate it. it is alright, no one will notice it. you can even bake your own cake and decorate it . if you have dessert at the dinner, you can cut down on cake, you can just ordered/buy one for cake cutting, people won't notice for not eating the cake

Mine is coming from one of the big stores that has both an M and an S in. My mother in law gets staff discount. Full cost is £199 and it has 1 fruit, 1 sponge, and 1 chocolate layer in it. It says it serves 190 people. I'm just gonna order cake topper/decoration to go on it.
In order to keep costs down with the wedding breakfast we have arranged with the venue to have the cake as dessert seeing as it is quite large.

I made my own 3 tier fruit cake (pictures in album somewhere) The ingredients for all 3 cakes came to well under£50 and i had plenty of cake to feed 120 with a tier left over (no need to make a christmas cake this year!) Its certainly worth a go if you are on a budget, its not that difficult and they definitely taste better than shop bought too xxx

Poulton, your cake looks fab - how did you get on icing and decorating it - had you done cake decorating before? Did you do it all yourself or did a florist do the flowers inbewtween?

We are getting our cake from marks and sparks too. You can't order the tes co ones online, I don't think, and our store hardly ever has them in. I've heard the m and s ones are quite nice and they seem quite good value, too xx

I don't know why the other big super markets don't do more of a wedding cake range - i think they'd be big sellers as cake is so expensive. I thought about it but I was put off by Tes - co only do fruit. I really think if the big green , orange and blue stores did more in their range like m s and Wait.... brides would flock to them! They'd make a packet out of it! x

lizxzylou the trick was to keep it really simple so the cakes were just plain iced.(i used marzipan and then fondant icing as i didn't think i could manage royal icing) .I then bought some lovely ribbon to pin around the cakes instead of doing fancy icing and this covered any imperfections.I made the flowers inbetween myself.it was actually very simple.I just got two polystyrene dummy cake tiers and a load of fake roses (although you could do it with fresh but i didn't want to be doing it on the morning of my wedding!) i then stuck the fake roses into the dummy tier. The flowers on the top were supplied by the florist to match my bouquet.
I have made my own christmas cake for the last 3 years but that is the extent of my experience lol!

Cake is lovely but not one of the big things of the day in my opinion

Everyone seems to be surprised that I am not making my own as I have my own cupcake business but it is so time consumming and I am quite particular that they are best eaten the day they are made or the day after at a push so that would mean up & baking the morning of the wedding (getting married at 13.00 so thats a no no)
Or doing the cake the day before
I can't deal with that stress!!!

    Don't blame her!
Its pretty stressful making them for someone else without all the time constraints and other wedding stresses that go on
I made my friends for her
70 cupcakes, 3 days after getting out of hospital from an infected dog bite to my hand
Made them single handedly if you will! lol

H2B was a star actually, he helped me so much and they looked amazing
Took over 5hrs but was worth it when she saw them

We did toy with doing our own, but want different flavours and I think sponge based cakes need to be made quite close to the wedding and didn't think I could cope with the extra stress.

Also, my mother wanted to help, and us much as I love her, her helping would no doubt mean banishing me from the kitchen whilst she scrapped all my ideas and made the sort of cake she thought I ought to have!

I agree, the cake isnt a major part of the day to me. I can't remember what other people's wedding cakes looked like at other weddings I've been too...

    Xx

I've contemplated making ours but don't think I will. We aren't having the standard cake we''re going for a strawberry cheesecake! Well excited about it but it's going to cost us a fortune. Unfortunately there's only one place u can order them from. Looked at buying from supermarkets but they just don't go big enough :( x
