Me and H2B have been talking about budgeting for a wedding etc and we came up with an idea and i was wondering if anyone else has done/or is thinking of doing the same and does it work?

We're going to grab a jar and put 'Wedding Money' on it and every week or so put a max of £10 each in and not touch it. Its like a joint bank account with less hassle, but i dont know if it will be 'Oh, i just need £5, i'll grab it from the jar!' - has anyone else done it, or done something similar to start saving for a wedding?

i think theres too much temptaion if it's there... it would for us 2 anyway, we'd just dip into it, i hardly ever cary cash, so when i need to pay dinner money on a monday, id be taking a tenner out, and id probably not bother putting it back

I don't see why it can't work for you though, we have a joint savings account, and i suppose its just as easy to dip into that, it's just if its there, the temptation to take money out here and there so i dont have to trek to the cash machine would be too much for me lol

would you just leave the jar there accumulating...? im tempted to just say set up a savings acount, its a pin in the neck waiting for all the passwords and things to come through, but once its sorted you can just forget about iot. plus you can accrue interest...

Actually thinking about it, realiscally youre gunna need to save up several grand, so i dont think id recommend it

Sorry if i sound like a stick in the mud!!

We were given two terra mundi jars with wedding fund on them for our engagement. We have one filled already and are half way through the other, just by putting every bit of spare change in it (except coppers). I know we will have £500 at least in the first one as we had about £300 in £2 coins to put in it. We havent counted the jar money in to our savings at all,we are also saving seperate and have nearly saved up the wedding already doing it this way so anything in the jars is a bonus at the end and can probably go towards our honeymoon!

we have a jar for 1P 2P 5P 10P 20P coins which we put in at the end of every day after emptying purse/pockets and thats really adding up now only been doing it about a month and there over fifty pound in there so far! we have another one for pound coins which we both put a certain amount in each week, and these jars are going to be going towards our honey moon. we havent dipped into it yet i think because we know its for our honey moon its stopped us from using it x

Velco - my mum said she'd 'look after' it for us, so it wasnt just laying around for us to dip into now and again. It wouldnt be to save for a whole wedding, but it would be something to put towards it.

I like the idea of a Terra Mundi Jar, might have to have a browse for one! :)

we have a demijohn jar and have put everything from 1ps to twenty pound notes in it. we have dipped into it a couple of times out of desperation for essentials from the shop but i thnk it's all about having will power and helping eachother not to touch. just think, the more you dip in the less you have for your wedding. we have this jar but its litterally been for us to save for last minute stuff. we've paid as we've gone with everything else. in total we managed to save nearly £300 in our demijohn. now the weddings paid for it going for savings for the next family holiday. good luck with your savings hun however you do it xx

We have a great big tin that you need to open with a tin opener which is nearly 30 cms high.

I tell I lie. Me and h2b did have one each, but I opened mine early (still had a couple of hundred though) to go to the races lol.

H2b still has his though, I think they are good to save up for bits like thank you presents etc

    Xx

The terra mundi jar's are amazing. You get wedding fund "pot of dreams" from tesco they're only about £6.50 and if you fill them with ONLY £2 coins you get about £1000 in each jar. Easiest way to do that is head to the bank with the money you've intended on saving anyway (eg the £10 a week) and get it changed to the £2 coins. On top of that save every £2 coin you get in between then and you'll soon start mounting up the cash.

A normal jar is a fab idea for coppers and 5ps though as with small amount coins you feel less tempted to dip into it when you're skint lol

The jars are great if you can be controlled and not tempted to dip into it for anything un-wedding related ;)

All my wedding savings are in the bank as are H2B's.

My h2b is in charge of all the savings but I have a tips tin in work that I will use to pay for my hair and make-up etc. I bought a tin that you have to open with a tin opener. You can't open it without ruining it, it's the only way I've found to stop myself dipping into it.

We have a large plastic 'bottle' that we put loose change in. It's so big though, that we've been saving in it for over a year now and still only managed to fill the bottom quarter lol.

The metal money tins from the pound shop are a good idea as well, as you can't get into them without a can opener (so no temptation lol).

I put £100 each month into a bank account in h2b name but I keep the card.
We both put loose change in a money box as we get it then once a month I count and bank it.

Ahhh but Mym the problem with the tins are that they cost just £1 and can be compromised with a tin opener LOL... Terra mundi's cost more and you have to smash them so you begrudge actually swiping from them LOL

but in all seriousness the tins ARE actually handy too

I've had two terramundi pots. Got/opened them before I got engaged. I only put £2 coins in both of them. One came to about £800, the other was about £550. Being hand made, they're all slightly different shapes. And I opened the 2nd one a little early, as the reason I was saving happened faster than expected.
I would get another one, as I know it's a really good way for me to save, however, I don't get anywhere near as much cash as I used to, not being a waitress any more, so it just wouldn't fill as fast as it used to :(
