Hi ladies, just wanted a bit of advice about dress shopping. I'm getting married at the start of August next year and im starting to psych myself up to go look and try on dresses for the first time. I've seen a lot of dresses in magazines and found 1 that i absolutely have fallen in love with. My problem is im scared to go try on dresses due to my weight. Im not the biggest in the world, but uncomfortable at a size 12/14 and 5ft 4" but plan to slim down over the next year for the big day. However im realising that ill have to try on dresses now at my current weight which is really putting me off big time!! what if my dream dress looks horrible on my larger frame or i find nothing that suits? what if everything i try on makes me look like a whale and puts me off completely? im really dreading the prospect of it-PLEASE HELP :(

Hi Gemma
i was the same im the same size as you but 2 inches smaller, like you i had my eye on a dress I LOVED IT. searched for ages for a store that supplied it, found one was over the moon, as soon as i got there i spied my dress tried it on and hated it my word of advise it to try on loads and believe me you will know the one when you try it on ( i never belived anyone when they told me that) but its true i tried on about 10 and was in floods of tears when i tried on the one. lol, and dont worry about your weight because if you try one on you love the weight you are just now just think how much more you will love it when you lose the weigh.
Have fun huni.xxx

Thanks weemindy!! I understand what your saying, think its the whole apprehensive feeling of not knowing until i try them which im really struggling with. Im so paranoid about my weight and find it difficult to lose weight sometimes that im panicking incase i dont lose any for the big day which will really upset me!

Hey Gemma.
I remember my first time i didnt really know where to start! i had looked through magazines and found a dress i thought i loved! I tracked it down to a local shop & went and tried it on and it looked awful on! really didnt suit me at all. Ive been in a handful of shops to try dresses on - trust me you'll know when you find "the one".
Im the same size as you and im currently trying to loose some weight for the big day too, but i didnt really feel confident about my size and was worried about trying dresses on too but when i found the one i felt a million dollars!
Theres soooo many types of dresses around im sure youll have no problem finding a style you like :)
Don't worry about it at all, I'm a size bigger than you, really uncomfortable with how I look at the moment as I have put on a lot of weight very quickly and I was terrified about trying dresses on but loved every moment of it! The dresses are so flattering, they made me feel so much better already and even if you have to order your dress to be made a little bigger than you intend to be most can be taken in up to 3 dress sizes once they arrive!!x

I'm getting married next June and I'm like you, I haven't been to try on dresses yet because I feel really self conscious. I think my biggest problem is that my sister is coming and I've always been the dumpy one compared to her. It's not at all that I'm big but she's 5'5" and I'm 5'1" and she always looks better in clothes than me. I had a nightmare recently that I found my perfect dress and then she asked to try it and everyone was crying at how beautiful she looked. I don't know where this insecurity has come from but it's really bugging me. I feel guilty when I see my sister because she's been so lovely about the wedding. I guess we're all feeling insecure about "the dress" because I keep reading these posts, it's good to see I'm not the only one. X
I can't wait until 29/06/2013
The day I marry the man of my dreams!

I suggest trying on dresses in every different silhouette, fabric, design (lace, bling of varying degrees) because you will find something that suits your figure and style. Then you know what suits you so that any shops you go to after you know what to try and what not to bother with. I promise you will find something you're comfortable in. Don't forget, you have 12 months so you don't really need to commit to any dress for another 3-6 months before it gets critical if you are going to order one. Enjoy the experience! xx

Thanks ladies for the advice! InDreamland-Is it really time enough in 3-6 months though?? everyone keeps telling me i need to get on the ball with the dress now as it can take a while to have it ordered in and then may need alterations?
CommentAuthorInDreamland
Starting trying on now hun but in terms of needing to actually order a dress most stores/designers say you need 6-9 months before the wedding. Alterations should only take a max of 2 weeks in my experience of my sisters wedding dress which had tonnes of lace and bling on it and my BM dress. xx

Oh my gosh Gemma, you literally wrote that post for me!!! I'm the same height as you and same size, alos the same level of self-concious & uncomfortable!!! Im also finding myself quite daunted by the whole prospect of walking in and straight away, there are hundreds of dresses staring at you
Where the hell do you start?! Being smaller on top to bottom is also awkward for getting dresses to fit me properly
Just not looking foward to it when I really should be :-(

Elle23, i am the exact same. Feel very overwhelm with the whole prospect of the dress shopping, especially when most women seem to look forward to this part of the wedding planning the most, i find myself secretly terrified and finding it all very daunting!! But i suppose as the ladies recommend we just need to try on as many dresses as possible to find the one that suits our shape and size best. There are so many dresses out there that we are bound to find something special that we love??? well fingers crossed anyway!!!
