Sorry to be a pain, I am so confused. We are having a Humanist ceremony in a hotel and I have contacted the registry office to ask about giving notice etc.
Now I am not sure what happens because I assume if you have a registrar they bring the marriage certificate with them? I dont know how Humanist ceremonies work but do you know if I need to get the marriage certificate when I go to give notice? Ive tried finding info on the interweb but I cant log on to humanist pages as they are blocked at my work due to being classed as "religion" which is just crazy as its the opposite of religion hahaha.
Anyone know how it works?

Humanist wedding celebrants in the BHA’s Humanist Ceremonies™ network are friendly, trained and experienced. They meet with the couple before the ceremony, to consult, answer questions, discuss ideas and to prepare a script especially tailored for the couple. They can advise on ways of handling small details that help to make such occasions a big success.
They can help prepare words to be spoken, link other people’s contributions and suggest readings and music. They will then plan and rehearse every aspect of the ceremony with the couple so they feel relaxed, confident and ready to really enjoy their special day.

Think it will be the same as what you do when you get married in a church - I have to 'give notice 3 months before then give the certificert to the church for us to sign on the day which then has to be sent back. Know when you have a registar they take everything. The fees for me for giving notice are £70 then the church on top and separate (I'm in Scotland) x

Mrs Mac Im in Scotland too. So if I pop up to the office to give notice and pay the fees and stuff they will give me the certificate to give to the humanist?
Thanks for that Brilly, we have a chap booked and he has asked us to go to meetings and stuff but every single time they have one (which doesnt seem very often) one of us is working :-( So we really need to book an appointment with him. See this is on H2B job list, however I always seem to end up chasing him up to actually complete these jobs lol. He booked him the humanist and has all the details but he hasnt arranged any kind of meeting.....so i guess Ill have to either nag him to do it or do it myself lol
rockabilly if ya type in british humanist association it explains alot of it on there i think hun i just copied the caption for u xx

Its meant to be non religious completely, we chose that kind of ceremony cos we are both athiest and it was also the cheapest option :-) Its just funny cos the whole point is its a celebration of the ceremony without religion but I cant check the page cos my works computer classes it as religion! hahaha. Dear me, Ive just read a story about guys in South America being actually nailed (with massive sharp nails) to a cross today. Seriously why? Do you think if there was a god he would want us to continually relive his sons death??? lol

That is a bit ironic alright! We had looked into humanism as well but hadn't got any further along the organisation pathway so I'm glad of this thread for a bit of info ;)

About humanism
Welcome to the website of Humanist Society Scotland (HSS). Welcome to humanism.
The Humanist Society Scotland is the Scottish charity working on behalf of non-religious people who seek to live ethical and fulfilling lives on the basis of reason and humanity.
See Scottish humanists talking about humanism.
We seek to reflect the views of the growing majority of Scots who have no religious affiliation and who want to promote a secular Scotland in which there is equal treatment in law and policy of everyone, regardless of religion or belief.

Madhen, are you in Scotland too? Its only legal in Scotland apparently but I think you can do it in england if you have a civil ceremony too.
Brilly, thanks hun. Dont worry too much - I'll check it out on the computer at home. Thanks again though :-)

In 2005, humanist weddings were declared legal in Scotland, unlike in England and Wales where you still need to carry out a civil ceremony to complete the legalities. Scotland is one of only six countries in the world where humanist ceremonies are legal and have the same legal status as religious and civil ceremonies as long as they are carried out by a Humanist Society of Scotland (HSS) Celebrant who has been authorised by the Registrar General of Scotland and performed in a place which is safe and dignified

We're thinking of having a humanist ceremony so I looked into this. You have to give notice and then go and pick the schedule up a few days before the ceremony, you then sign it on the day and return it to the registry office, hope this helps
CommentAuthorRockabilly chick
ahhh I see, ok so I have to pick up the certificate and then drop it back. I get it now :-)
Thank you :-)

If you are getting married in England or Wales your personal, unique, non-religious humanist ceremony is not yet legal, so you do need to arrange to register your marriage at your local council offices a day or two before your own wedding day.
You do not need to exchange rings at that council ceremony, merely say 32 legal words (eg I know of no reason why I cannot marry you), sign their register and receive your certificate.
Your humanist wedding ceremony can take place wherever your reception is - your family garden, an evening in a romantic barn, an art gallery, outdoors in a park etc. In Scotland Humanist Celebrants hold a Register, which is why humanist ceremonies are legal there. The British Humanist Association is campaigning for this to become the case in England and Wales too.
