As the title says! I'm currently a comfortable size 16, verging on a size 14. I've already lost 2 stone since having my daughter last august, but am HOPING to be a size 8 - 10 on my wedding day in March next year. So when would be a sensible time to go dress shopping? I know you shouldn't leave it too late, but I don't want to end up needing loads of alterations.

normally a minimum of 6 months before you should be placing an order just so it can be made, shipped etc. Good luck on losing the weight and congrats on your loss so far :)

cant wait to be Mrs Evans less than 3 weeks woooo
    start weight 10st 1.5 lbs
    weight now 8st 4.5 lbs
total loss to date: 24.5 lbs now need to maintain!

well I'm about the same size as you and have lost one and half already i have been to look at dresses a few times now and have picked the one i want. The bridal shop said that the latest i could order for my July 2013 wedding is march next year its usually a good 16 weeks to get most dresses ordered in unless you go for a sample sale dress which you buy there and then the latest i would leave it is 6 to 7 months before the wedding if you get a tie back they can be made smaller or bigger and most dresses can be taken in one to 2 sizes if you lose weight between ordering and the wedding

the idea of the lace up back is good because you have a back panel that can be extended if you havent lost all of the weight you intended to lose. I have a lace up back and she said it didnt matter about my weight aslong as I dont go more than a stone heavier than I was at the time of ordering x However, mine is loose around the legs too but you can always leave it 6 months before and if losing more weight, most dresses can be taken in by ONE dress size without altering the look. Remember though it is much harder to let out so perhaps get to a comfy weight, order and take advice on how much more, if any, you can lose.

I think 6 months is the minimum, as they need time to make the dress, get it to the shop and then allow time for a couple of fittings.

I'd be very careful about looking through the terms and conditions, most places get you to sign a contract saying that you will not change your weight (up or down) by any more than one size. When I queried this they said that if you have a lot of weight loss then its just not possible to alter dresses that much, you would have to buy another dress.

i ordered my dress in october 2010! very early i know :)
i had to have it ordered in an 18 as thats what i was then. i am now a 14 and hoping to get down to a 12 and the lady in the shop said they can take the dresses in by up to 4 dress sizes but can only extend up 1 size.

Heyah I'm hoping to loose 3 dress sizes too and get back down to being a size 12. My moh doesn't finish university till July so I don't intend to try any dresses on till at least then. Gives me another 5 month to loose more weight haha. When I went to a wedding fayre I told the lady that I wanted to loose weight first and she said you can still come in whenever as you could just try on the dresses to see which shape dress u prefer and suits you. Thing I'm more worried about is suiting the dress while I'm big and then it looking totally different when I'm more slim lol. I have searched online tho for the types of dresses I like.
Just make sure that you try on dresses between 4 and 6 months time incase they need ordering in or altering :D xx

I have only just ordered my dress as i tried to leae it as late as i could. I was also told that the dress could be altered down my at least 2 dress sizes but no more as it would alter the shape of the dress too much

my dress shop also recommend going in every time i go down a dress size to try on the dress and see how i like the shape she said my dress would look as good on someone to skinny as its better for a view curves i tried on the 18 which was a size to big ideally i want to be a 12 but would be happy to order a 14 as its boned and pulls me in anyway its more my arms and shoulders i don't like in the dress

Well reading this thread has made me wonder if I was a little hasty as I have already bought my dress and it is hanging in my wardrobe and is 3 dress sizes too small! But I ordered it in that size on purpose to motivate me to loose the weight!

I went into a store that tried to tell me it didnt matter how much I lost, they'd take it in 5 dress sizes if need be with no change... lol! Put me right off ordering with them when they were willing to lie in order to secure the sale. i've ordered my dress from a shop I love, got my bm dresses from there already and I've ordered a dress that fits my boobs but is 2 inches too small on the waist and 1 inch too small on the hips... it doesnt worry me as I know I'll lose they extra inches by exercising, anymore is a bonus x
