What is the best way to save for a wedding, when you are already saving for a flat?

Like Sussie said, best is to allocate savings to both! but it can take time.

i would concentrate on one thing at a time too but if you are doing both a good way to save for both is have 2 savings accounts so you can have all your savings seperate or if your like me & rubbish at saving start buying things early so you have no choice but to pay money towards whatever you buy each month, iv done this with lots of things for the wedding & it really helps :-) x

We both have different bank accounts but we are saving for a house as well as the wedding and we have just changed our car. So we are just putting away the max that we can. We have both been saving for about 10 months now and we have close to £15k now but we want to put £20k for the house the house prices are mad near us at the minute.

We have already paid for our venue as that was the whole deposit we only had to pay £50 deposit for the flowers but our photographer was £500.

I would do a budget spreadsheet with everything on it and speak to your suppliers and find out if you can pay for things monthly as sometimes it works out easier.

WOW £15k in 10 months is blinking good, well done.............and 3 times our budget hehehe

We are (trying) saving in a seperate account as well as buying little bits as we go like jewellery, favour boxes etc
One of the reasons we postponed to a far off date is because were doing it all ourselfs and dont want to go into debt because of one day!

I set up a separate ISA specifically for the wedding, and I pay into that each month. Every 3 months H2B transfers across his equivalent portion and all wedding related payments come out of our combined wedding fund. We're lucky enough that we can afford to put away £18.5k over 14 months but we used our saving level to plan how far away we wanted to plan the wedding - most of our suppliers only wanted deposits to secure bookings etc and all want to be paid off about a month before the wedding, so we have time to stockpile the funds. After the wedding we want to carry on saving the same amount so within a year we have a house deposit all ready - but if I were you I'd set up 2 savings accounts if you want to save for both, and set up a standing order each month so it automatically transfers out. You may want to decrease how much you're currently putting into your house fund to cover the wedding etc. We've had to cut down on treats, weekend breaks and have been using discount voucher sites for meals out etc but it gets to a point where you don't miss that so much anymore :-)

It works out to be 700 a month each - but I'm fortunate in that I was already saving 300 a month anyway, and my car and student loan was paid off last year so the 450 I was paying for that got added to the savings pot :-)

There are lots of brides on here doing weddings for a lot less, we're having a fairly large wedding as I come from a big family etc - so you may just want to put aside say 300 a month for now, between both of you then within 12 months you'd have £7200 (plus any interest) - within 15 months till your wedding date you'd have £9000 (and I've seen threads where people are doing weddings for £1-2k so you could technically still pay for your house etc!) - also when planning your wedding, negotiate loads on everything - I told my uncle's girlfriend to haggle by paying up front for her wedding dress - she did that last week and got £400 knocked off the store price! Never know till you ask!

Thats pretty good going miss! :)

After ive paid all my rent and bills i have £450 a month left. So im able to save £100 a month for wedding & £100 for house in future. and i live off the £250 left each month,Which i guess is better than some people! :)

Everyone seems to be doing really well in saving £750 a month and my H2B is putting in just over £1k that's the only reason why.

Bridalmiss is right haggle with everything we did that for our photographer and we got our pre wedding pic for free so that has saved us over £300 quid which is great. Our florist is new and she has only done about 6 weddings do far but we love what she does and she is doing all our centre pieces we have 10 tables and it's costing £350 but all our flowers are cost £550 which is great my friend is a hairdresser and another friend is a make up artist and she does beauty treatments.

Make sure you set up a standing order so it comes out the same day as you get paid

Right, haggle on everything. If you struggled to discipline your self and spend the money set up a standing orde from your current account to your various savings accounts to make sure you actually do save x

I have to move the funds myself as I don't get paid the same day every month. And I don't put the money into my savings account as its connected to my current account on my online banking so too easy to move back when feeling Skint. Our savings go into his savings accountbthat neither of us know the pin to (so he has to go into the branch) and i keep hold of the card.
I empty the money box as soon as there is enough to fill a money bag and deposit it as soon as possible.
Don't use those machines in supermarkets people they charge you 7-9p per pound they count.
