Ok, so we are having a discussion about this at the moment...
would it be ok to make a batch of cd's up, take a hi fi system to the reception, and put someone in charge of changing the cd's over once in a while? (we have someone with a player that teks 6 cd's)
or do you think it would best to push the buget that teeeny bit extra and have a dj?

I've been having the same debate! My venue has a built in sound system thing (not anything massive, presumably normally just used for background music) so I'm thinking of just setting up a playlist on the laptop or an ipod and plugging it into that and letting one of the ushers be in charge of it on the day.
None of us are dancers and I cant imagine anyone getting up having a boogie so it seems a bit daft having a full blown DJ.

I think c.d's are perfectly fine, its still music and those who want to dance still can.
see now i am showing my age and how un techie i am.... never thought of using the laptop or an i pod! I would love it if everyone had a dance at some point but my oh says hardly any of her family will dance... (they might after a few voddies though!)

I depends how many guests you have too.. you cant really have a dj and only like 20 people. Well you could but it'd look a little odd :) Also depends on your budget and if you can splash out. A dj i think is a minor detail that wont be missed if you didnt have :D x

We are using an iPod and a set of portable speakers to do our music. My portable ones have a remote, but they are a bit tinny sounding so I may ask for some nice ones for my birthday (next month) so that I can use them. :)

We're blowing the budget on a comedy caberet act and a ceilidh band so are most likely going to get a CD mix put together and blast it out later in the evening. I was also thinking about having some CD backing music during the meal; what do you think about that?.
Does anybody on here happen to know anything about sound systems and what equipment I would need to make enough noise in a pretty large ballroom with 120 people? A hefty percentage will be gay men loudly singing Beyonce and Kylie so it neads to be pretty loud hehe

Price some DJ's up or see if your venue has a resident DJ, some do extra entertainment such as singing etc. If its beyond your budget stick with doing it yourself.

If you give the list to the dj they can arrange to have all/majority of them if they are any good. My stepdad has previously bought a full album in order to have 1 single that was requested for a wedding first dance :)

we are planning on using the ipod. a friend is a dj and willing to provide us all the kit (and set it up himself) without the £150 charge of him being there! We also thought when we send the invites we would put a separate bit where the guests can nominate a couple of songs they would like to hear. That way everyone will have at least one song they like and saves you from having to think of enough songs to fill the evening :) xx

There was around 20 of us for our reception so spent the night in the hotel bar and got the staff behind the bar to play our compilation CD's that we put together - but for our evening reception back home we had around 60-70 and it would have looked odd with just music playing so we got a DJ for the night.

we are doing exactly this! We're having an iPod on shuffle and plugged into an iPod dock/pa system, which the reception venue are lending us. Much cheaper than hiring a DJ, though I can fully understand the flip side of the debate.:-)

We are using our ipod and speakers, its just an afternoon reception, no evening do. so we have compiled a playlist of 50s style songs ......

I think for back ground music an iPod is great but for the evening dancing i'd just make sure you had lots of playlists and know your guests well (like the idea of getting them to provide song lists) We went to a wedding where they did this and there were long periods where no one danced as they didn't like the music and then a period with no music whilst they tried to sort out a new playlist . A good dj should respond to the crowd so you shouldn't end up with a situation like that

I have also thought about this nicsquared.....just in case the ipod messes up, we are also taking the CDs along too, and the venue is supplying us with a CD player. Hopefully we wont need to use it but its there just in case. Nothing would be worse than that deathly silence, with everybody waiting for the music to come back on while we struggle to see what's gone wrong.

We're doing it, not only for cheapness, but we won't have the added worry of a third party (namely a DJ) not playing the songs we wanted. We're ripping our CD collection into our mac, picking the songs we want, and it goes wrong, then Liz and I can't shout at anyone but ourselves!;-)
