When looking around for ideas, i am fed up with finding that it is given that i am getting married in church, am having bridesmaids, have 2 parents, or that they may be divorced, etc etc etc. When in fact i am getting married in a registry office, i am not having bridesmaids, my father is deceased and will not be walking me down any isle nor am i young or wearing a 3 tier cake! I am happy with our arrangements and i am looking forward to our special day, but it would be nice to see more information for alternative weddings and not state "when you arrive at church" but when you arrive at your chosen venue. I feel that this is only a site for those that are having traditional weddings with all the trimmings.

I don't mind as our arrangements suit us fine, but i get sick of reading, info pages that are only geared around big church does, bridesmaids, etc. and tons of prep that doesn't relate to us at all. We are having a lovely do at the registry office and a meal afterward in another town, then after we come back from honeymoon, an evening do for peeps at home. no bridesmaids, no plans for a photographer, no best man, just a fairly simple do that is tailored to our situation. Just wish i didnt have to read through loads of irrelevent stuff to get a simple answer :)

I'm not having a church wedding. We're both christened (an excuse for a party as my mum put it) but not religious so I would never have felt right getting married in a church as it would seem fake and a bit of a lie to make promises before a god i don't believe in!
We're having the ceremony, breakfast and reception in a hotel venue and i'm really happy with it :)
I agree it seems to be harder to find things for non church weddings but it's all there.
I am still however having BMs and everything. Got a fair few people involved in the ceremony some how.

I must be crazy giving myself only 6 months!

Our day is in one venue only. We aren't religious and getting married in a church doesn't seem right to us. I always wanted to be married in a castle and we have found a small castle that suits all our needs, the only downside is we have to climb 75 steps to reach the ceremony at the top and they don't supply oxygen which I recon I will need lol. I think this is a great site and love reading about everyone's dream wedding plan's and sharing our own idea's and thoughts.

Are you kidding me? There are quite a few of us on here that have had/are having different ceremonies, you just need to have a bit more of a look through the treads, I think.
I, for one, got married in Las Vegas, with just 8 people there (it would have been less had my Grandma not died and left my mum some money which enabled her and her friend to come). None of Dave's family were there. My Dad died when I was 18 so he clearly wasn't going to walk me down the aisle and my Godfather died 3 years ago and he was supposed to be the one to do that. As a result, my mum did it, whch was weird as we're not really close and she always said she didn't want to do it!
We then had a non-religous blessing in a local park when we got back and the ceremony was conducted by Dave's old housemate and it was all about love and happiness and personal growth, so really not traditional in any sense. That day was completed with a party in a local restaurant which we hired and had a lovely buffet for our guests and a disco.
You could always start your own thread and call it something like 'non-traditional wedding thread' and then everyone can see what your plans are and everyone else that's having a non-traditional wedding can contribute too. Just a thought....

To be fair, I dont really use the rest of this website very much. I had pretty much picked everything I wanted before I joined so now I just use to forum to find things that are cheap (but mainly cos Im bored at work and want a chat lol).

Your day sounds just like the day my brother has planned for March. You should totally start a non traditional thread - I bet you'l find a few folk on with similar ideas to yourself :-)

I think that really depends on what you are looking for, because everything you have in Church you can have in a registry office or a civil venue apart from certain vows and religious songs/words. There is nothing in any rule book that states because you choose to hold your ceremony in a registry office that you cannot have the same (should you want that sort of thing), i mean, what is it you want ideas for exactly? - there are so many lovely ladies on this forum with different ideas for their wedding day - you are bound to find some thing of interest.

I won't be having a church venue, I only go to church for weddings , christenings or funerals and I would feel a tad hypocritical speaking in the eyes of God when I don't go to Church, my wedding won't be as traditional as the ideal, and also, who really has the "traditional white wedding" these days, ppl are not afriad to be different and express their love in other ways and get married in other locations.

We're gonna be in the registry office as well! Il burn if I step foot in a church! lol
My brother is gonna walk me down coz I hate my dad and I dont have the figure to carry the giant dress so mines gonna be a simple sheath type.
Oh and coz purple is my fave colour Ive invited all guests to wear it on the day!
Your wedding is about you and your H2B, bums to what anyone else thinks!

An article for a non traditional bride.

When you turn up at your chosen venue, wearing what ever you feel best in, carrying your dead flowers or sheeps skull or not, what ever way the fancy might take you.
As you (and your giver awayer, husband to be, or bridesmaids or non of the above) walk, skip, dance or bunny hop between the seats it is best to do this to some sort of music or def metal or get your guests to hum pratty flowers to you.
When you say your vows or promises or .....

Ok you get my drift and I'm not trying to be ar5ey or get your back up or anything,

But the whole point of an alternative wedding is that its not scripted isn't ?. The advise thats out there for traditional brides isn't a step by step, you have to do this or else! Its a range of examples that you can pick and choose from to make your day perfect for you and your OH. Sometimes and I guess more often for some people you have to suck it up and not take offence or umph when the world is talking about "normal".

Really really don't want to cause any offence.......maybe you could look at it more like "and the oposite of that is" make a game out of it.

    I'm now a married woman
    I have a gorgeous husband
    Whats to do now
Theres no more wedding planning to do

I didn't think there would be anything for me on this site, with me spending very little on everything but how massively wrong was I, there are so many ladies in different situations doing different things so get stuck in and show your ideas off!

I love the forums and also love to have a nose at what other ladies are doing even if it's not necessarily relevant to what I am doing :)

To be fair, most people do choose to have bridesmaids, wear a dress of some description and hold flowers. That's why most people cater to the traditional wedding. It's a massive industry, all revolving around a few key elements. Magazines, websites and blogs are more about making money by telling brides what they think they need and what they have to have for a traditional wedding. To have an alternative wedding, you shouldn't really need websites to have what you want, hence why alternative brides choose to do it their way. There are no checklists or guides for a non traditional wedding because they probably assume you threw out the Rulebook long ago!

I'm not exactly doing a traditional wedding but we do have a lot of traditional elements. I will be in a white dress, with bridesmaids and flowers etc, but the personal touches are still there.

Every wedding is special in its own way.

I always wanted to get married outside and somewhere u can guarantee a summers day, so chose Italy as the place. I wanted 2 get married on Lake Garda since I was about 5 years old, so u could say this isn't traditional for us in the UK (I can't really say if its traditional 4 the Italians).

The places where u read about how the father gives the bride away etc are traditions and most ppl would want 2 do this. However not everyone goes with tradition. I'm having my Grandmother give me away as she is the person I am most close 2.

the problem is, if u did have these advice pages talking in a non-traditional way, ppl would get offended that there is nothing about traditional weddings.

Do whatever u want 2 do 4 ur wedding. U only get 2 do it once so make sure u do what makes u happy.

    It depends where you look.
I did look at first for a forum with a less traditional community but alas couldn't find one. I'm still fairly new on here but keep discovering every day another girlie who's not going down the traditional route.

I personally find the whole wedding industry pukeworthy. It's like people losing their personalities and donning fancy dress. But that's my opinion and I admit I always had the compulsary need to be different :-)

As for our wedding - there will be traditional elements because I like them. Simple as that. I am not English, bridesmaids are a thing of the English or American culture and I am embracing it. But they don't have to fulfil all these traditional duties. I will be wearing a white dress but not a traditional long one and it will have elements of red. We're getting married in a pub and will have a hog roast type of meal afterwards - the thought of a stiff sit down meal is awful to me. Nevertheless we will have a seating plan to avoid chaos. I suppose our music is totally untraditional and I am sure the song I'll walk down the aisle to will cause raised eyebrows but it's us and it's perfect. Our devoration including caketopper is somewhat kooky but hey ho that's me or us and I think that's ultimately what a wedding should be about: the couple. Not some glitzy unindividual mainstream package deal.

Look at wedding blogs - there's a ton of alternative brides out there in the wedding blogosphere - when you look at their pics you feel like little miss boring. I do anyway.

Ours wasn't fully traditional. There's was only 19 of us in all, we went to Gretna Green for it - and we did have a pastor for the ceremony (that was at one of the wedding rooms at Gretna Hall) but the biggest decider was that he was cheaper than a registrar!! lol.

We didn't have the 'traditional' wedding car - instead we had a vw campervan. And I only had one bridesmaid (only because I was talked into it, so that someone would be there to help me get ready lol).

Our reception was a three course meal in the hotel restaurant - but in the evening we all just hit the hotel bar and stayed there til the early hours lol. Definitely not a traditional wedding!!!

we are having a 'traditional' wedding but surely it's up to the individual what makes them happy. I have chosen a church wedding because of the link with my mums family. And although my grandparents are all deceased it was special to me that we had a connection with them on our wedding day. my oh has no religious inklings of any sort at all and was happy to get married anywhere.
In fact I guess our wedding is unusual because we are getting married in a church!
I would say that most info out there is now more catered for alternative weddings cos that is the norm now! Most of the reception venues we visited suggested that - this is where you would have your ceremony so I would suggest that a non church wedding is definitely the norm! x

... i am getting married in a dessert with just 2 other people there .... we are having another ceremony 6 weeks later where we are having bridesmaids etc .... so i guess you could say that is as near tradional as you could be with out it being in a church or even a legal ceremony

I think if your not seeing the information that you want then you should start your own discussions on what you are interested in finding out about and then you'll find people giving you their ideas on a ceremony like this, as there are some out there, and even if someone is not doing the same as you they may still help you with ideas.

We're not going down the route you said. We are 37 and 38, I'm on my 2nd time round. We're having a register office. I'm walking in with my daughter, not my dad (who is my stepdad). We're getting married in the morning - and we've not invited very many family, but the people who are our special friends - then we're going home for a few hours and having a reception / party from 6 in the evening.
I have found loads of help on here and if I can't find what I want, I simply start my own thread - the mods soon pick it up if it's repeated.
I'm sorry that you're unhappy with the site. Personally, I love it.
