I know if you're getting married somewhere else you need to book the registrar and give notice etc. We're getting married in a church and there's a registrar that they provide for us (who is actually my Mummy!) but do we still need to give notice in the same way? And what's the deal with the reading of the Banns? I should know all this stuff by now but anyone with any info is massively appreciated to stop a very swamped B2B's head from exploding! x

All I know for the bann's is, I think you have to attend the church for three consecutive sunday's. Can't help with anything else. I'm having a church wedding and don't really understand it myself. xx

we are having a church wedding and we have to have our banns read in our parish church for 3 conseqetive sundays before the wedding. just contact the vicar of your parish church and ask if he can read your banns. reading of the banns is the same as giving notice, according to our vicar its cheaper than getting marriage license or something

it depends what church it is. we are getting married in a methodist church so had to go to the local register office to give notice, c of e and catholic read the banns there. if your mum is the regiatrar will she not be able to tell you? x

You dont give notice like you do with a civil ceremony. If you are getting married within you parish you have your banns read 3 consecutive weeks within 3 months of the date of the wedding. If you are marrying outside your parish you also have to have your banns read in your parish church, as well as th church you wish to marry in, then your parish church will issue you a certificate to give to the church inwhich you wish to marry. You cannot get married in a church without this taking place.

Thanks ladies, and Sbride that's brilliant. It properly never occured to me to ask Mum!!! I chew her ear off about place settings and table centerpieces but didn't think to ask her about the legalities! Will nag her in the morning. Luckily she's got the patience of a saint...and 23 years of putting up with me! Yes please Kaz - our church is Pentecostal so not sure which umbrella it comes under!

Basically you've got to meet the vicars of your parish churches (so you might need to find out which parish you belong to).
They'll give you a form which you have to fill out.
Then you're banns need to be read out- usually a month before your wedding. the banns are valid for 3 months, so after 3 months if you're not married they've got to be read again.
the bans need to be read in yours, and your h2b's parish churches and the church to intend on getting married in.
hope this helps!

We have to register that we are getting married 6 -12 months before and produce or birth certs and passports. We have to pay £20 each for the registration then £14 each for each certificate that has to be given to both people. We get our marriage schedule 14 days before the wedding. We then have to return them to the council office within 3 days after the wedding to get our marrige cert..

We've just done this. If it's not C of E, then you need to give notice. Ours is Methodist and we also don't live in the same district as we're getting married.
We had to go to the registrar in the place where we live. You have an interview with them for about half an hour and it's about £70 (just under, can't remember the exact price). They then send the forms off to the district you're getting married in, who display it on the wall for a couple of weeks for people to object if they wish! If there are no problems the forms come back to the registrar where you live and when you have your first interview you either tell them you'll collect them from them or ask them to post them to you at home. It took about three weeks to a month for ours to come back.
You then have one year to get married (so you can't do any of this til you get past the one year mark, but you're 8 months so you'll be fine).
It's only C of E that read the Banns (99% sure) so you'll have to give notice.
Hope this helps! x

Sorry to resurrect this - I am having an issue as getting married in Non-Church of England Church outside my district. My local registrar has given me a bit of jip as its not "my ususal place of worship" (quite far away). Has anyone had this / overcame this problem. Apprently I need to reside in the same district of the church for "9 clear days" and then give notice there. Has anyone else had this?

also what happens if both of us live together and have for more than 6 months, do we get them read at the same church?
