I am just newly engaged and planning away. My biggest decision is whether I should make my own cake or not?

Has anyone else ever done this? I am a cake designer so can do this easily but not sure if it will be too stressful?!?

I know everyone will expect me to make it ... what do you all think?

I'm making my own as it's a budget thing and to be honest I don't think I could justify (to myself) a minimum of £200 for a 3 tier sponge plainly decorated!

Thinking of 3 tiers with the bottom tier fruit cake and the rest sponge so that the fruit one can be started soon, then I'll make the others 2 days before and ice straight away! I think it gives me enough time and it's not like I'll be able to sleep anyway lol xx

But on the plus side I now know someone that does it for a living, if you'd be kind enough to offer a bit of advice if I need it? xx

I think in your postition I would be doing it. I am however lucky enough to have a family friend in the cake business who is doing ours as a gift. So best of both worlds for me. No stress or payout

Kaz - I think you are right. It does come down to budget and I really don't think I could elsewhere ... and i will not sleep either lol!

I have uploaded some pics of cakes I have made so I might choose one of them!

I would me more than happy to help with advice if you need it. You may need help with how to stack etc... just let me know :) Remember you can also buy pre-made sponge cake / fruit cake and just ice them yourself. Even less stress :)

Kat - I think you are right! The more I think about it the more I decide I should do it! It is great being able to make them for family weddings...saves shopping for presents :)

Wow had a peek and they are amazing! Thank you, your advice would be invaluable!

I usually make birthday cakes, last week was a pirate ship for 30 people

But I've never had to stack or use pillars before, except for maybe a dowel to hold something up! lol xx

Kaz could you use one of those cake stands that have tiers built in so you dont have to worry about them sinking? Or do you not know what I mean! And the pirate ship looks awesome

Thanks hun, as far as my knowledge extends is that there are thin plastic dowels that need to be put between each layer whether you stack them or have pillars! The cake stands sound cool, I'm having butterflies spiraling up from the bottom, I'll try and draw a pic! lol xx

Your cakes are beautiful, you should definately make your own cake. I want a black and white cupcake tower for my day and I was considering making them myself (obviously cupcakes are far easier lol) I love baking and I do make very tasty treats HOWEVER I am just not great at making things as polished looking as they need to be for a wedding. So I ordered a piping kit and I cannot figure out which nozzle to use :-/ I have now found someone who will do it for £150 so I am going with that. It took me about 5 hours to make 20 cupcakes. I dread to think how long it would take to make 65!! lol!

Do you buy the wee rose decorations? Or do you make them? I've always wondered....

Ok well I know the pic isn't brill but this is my quick drawing from my wedding note book!
The black up and around is the butterflies (they will match my colour scheme) and was also going to have flowers around the sides but flat on the cake in the same colour for a bit of added interest (in royal icing) but so that they don't take over it! Will upload a better picture when I've drawn one!

I am defo going to make my own cake now after hearing about everyone else making theirs :)

Petra - I make and buy them...depends on how much time I have on my hands but usually hand make x

I make & decorate cakes for a living but I'm not doing my own. Making other brides cakes is a real honour but to do my own wouldn't feel right to me as it's my work if you like. There is enough to do in organising a wedding esp the days running up to it so to have to start baking is an absolute no no lol. I'm not taking orders for the week before or after my wedding so not gonna be doing my own lol xxx

I'm doing my own cake, purely because I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on something that might not even get eaten (some of my intended guest list are very fussy eaters) I'm doing a birdcage style cake though I'm worried that may be a little adventurous for my level of skill so I'm practicing a few times before hand which my h2b loves.
Saying that, I will probably only bake the top tier myself as I want it to be a cherry chocolate brownie cake, and I will buy the other tier(s?)

Hazel_dazzel your cakes look fab. You should definately make your own cake. I will be making my own cake, it will have handmade iced roses. I've done these before on other peoles wedding and birthday cakes, but mine don't look as presine as yours; can you tell me exactly how you make your roses?
