I was wondering if this is right? I have tried to calculate the customs charge for having 4 bridesmaid dresses shipped from china. I have discovered (to my horror) that they are going to charge me the following
Total customs value: £272.11 Import duty: £32.65 Import VAT: £60.95 Total import duty & VAT due: £93.61 Total landed cost: £365.72 at USD/GBP exchange rate of 0.609
Does this look right to anyone who has had items shipped from china? On top of this is the actual shipping cost by the company which is only about £18. The dresses are about £70 each.

Seems an awful lot for 4 dresses, but not sure, I've not had anything that big shipped in! See if you can change the name of the thread to "customs charge???" and someone with a bit of know-how may see it! Best of luck xx

I say the first thing I think of!

Good idea Kaz, Can someone with the power please alter the thread title so as to attract people in the know.
I know, sbride, I thought i had got a fantastic deal and even thought that maybe it would be about £30 charge per dress or something. I'm now thinking its just not worth it. I really hope someone can get back to me and tell me i have done something wrong.
If you asked the company to send each dress separately would the value of each parcel be under the customs threshold?
Calculating the charges is really complicated because different types of goods have different commodity codes that change the rate that customs is charged on them. I think your best bet for a definitive answer would be to call the VAT, Excise and Customs helpline on 0845 010 9000, they will work it out for you.

I wondered if it might cost more because i said there were bridesmaid dresses. It said the tax on the dresses was 12% plus VAT at 20%. I didn't know there was a customs threshold so will look into that one and see if I can get some answers. Thank you for the tel number that is extremely helpful.
I also couldn't find any insurance cost so just assumed it was included it the companies shipping cost so entred £0 into that box on the calculator.

You don't have to pay customs duty on a package if the value is less than £135. You would still have to pay VAT because the threshold for that is much lower - only £18.
I am not positive but I don't think it is more because you said "bridesmaid" - I think the relevant commodity group covers all garments, so it would only be a different rate if you were ordering unworked material to have made up here in the UK. I don't think there is any kind of premium because it is a wedding/luxury item.
I ordered my wedding dress from America so I had to deal with this stuff then but it was a while ago so I'm not sure of the details and some of it might have changed - it was before the VAT increase for one thing! The helpline was very good though and they will give you the answers you need.

Thanks for that I had a quick look and I am glad you have confirmed what i thought it meant. I am thinking if I get my bms bresses sent to each individual person that will avoid the big cost of customs duty. Thanks I will give them a call 2moro.
