Mine is 3 tier with each tier a different flavour sponge and fully decorated, delivered for only £250. I don't know where she has got the £1000 from but call a few places and get quotes. £400 should be plenty x

our is £420 for a 3 tier cake, bottom tier - chocolate, middle tier - lemon sponge and top tier carrot cake. Ours has a lot of intricate detailing, we're not paying so it doesn't matter really but i though it was a good price. (cake below but only a 3 tier)

Ours is four tiers of all different flavours as neither of us like fruit cake and we want to use as dessert so need a choice.

My friend is making it for FREE cause she loves me and i designed it.......when i gave her the design she said she would normally charge between £300- 350 for something like it(details are in the show off your cake thread so do a search if you wish to see) so i feel very very lucky having her as a friend :-)

Are you wanting white chocolate wrapped around it rather than icing? That will up the price a bit as thats trickier and more expensive to do, but I still think £1000 is way too high (unless you are going to the chocolate cake shop off the telly show!), I would probably take about £355. If you wanted hand made white chocolate roses or whatever on it the price would go up but certainly wouldnt be any higher than £450! I think you need to contact a few designers (people working from home are generally cheaper - just check they have a current health and safety certificate) and find out if they have experience of working with chocolate and how much they would charge.

I was discussing the cost differences between cakes with our cake lady, she said some charge more for having a tier separated cake because of the work involved of balancing out the tiers with spaces!

Ours if £300 for 4 tiers (fruit, carrot, lemon and chocolate) including delivery, set up and hire of the cake stand, and I think that is pretty good value for me. Only having simple decoration of piped icing dots and ribbon round the base of each tier. My florist is doing flowers for the top and one separator tier.

Reckon £1000 might be a bit much, unless you're getting your cake from LVCC or Peggy Porschen! Shop around and get some different quotes. Also the bakers might have an idea of how to achieve your vision within your budget that you might not have thought of before.

most 3 tier cakes, including chocolate are 200-600 depending on the detail involved, Dont know where she got 1000 from unless she was looking at designer cakes. And we shopped around loads so you will be fine. I think most brides spend around 350-400 but be prepared to go up to the 600 if you want more than moderate detailing.

mine would have cost £300 (in my photo album) but luckily i won a comp. and thats saved me £250 off the cost of it.

Although cakes can be dear i wouldn't think it would cost over £400 for a 3 tier cake - esp if you shop about.

I make cakes so I'm doing my own, 3 tiers with pillars, but putting a dusting of colour on it, to match and butterflies around!
Found a great supplier who makes these rice paper butterflies, so something similar to this:-

Their lovely Kaz, i had wanted similar as mine, ut my oh put his fot in my plans thus i have the cake i am having. Iagree with the comment made above about the cakes being dearer for seperate cakes. They charged me £25 so they can get the glass seperators, i could have bout them for £5, but thought i have enough on my plate and left them to it.

We're having cheese! Need to find a supplier, but will do that closer to the time, even if we get it from Tesco it shouldn't cost us more than £100 we recon. I think you're friend is pricing it way to high - I'd have a google and go on gumtree and find local people who could make what you want. xx

Yep! So just going to have wheels of cheese instead of cake. We get pudding as part of our venue deal and we both LOVE cheese, so thought it would be nice to have something different and have it with the evening guests so that it's part of the evening buffet :-)

Your lucky you can make your own - we were toying with that idea, although that was going to be giant scones as we both love them as well! But I didn't want the stress of doing it in case I messed it up (which is a very real possibility!) The butterflies look lovely though :-) xx

Can you not make it and freeze it so that you only have to decorate it? Or does it not taste too good when you do it like that?

Don't think it tastes as good, it's quite simple though, roll out sugar paste the lot and then I've bought some powder colour to brush on so each layer will start dark on the top and then light at the bottom to match my scheme and then butterflies curving up around (in the space between layers we're trying to either attached the butterflies to nylon thread or cover netting in them!

Zoe, the sponge will go off quicker than in a shop because I won't be adding loads of preservatives (as H2B's allergic and reason I've got to do it) if I did fruit cake I could make it tomorrow for eating next June!!!

Well we've just today put down a deposit for our cake and it's a three tiered, three flavoured sponge, very simple design and it will be £300 including delivery to our venue. We are using a local cake shop, so I reckon you should try local places first. And like the other ladies I will be gobsmacked if it actually costs you £1000.

We wanted something a bit different to a traditional wedding cake - so we're having a large one tier open book (pic on profile). We saw the perfect one whilst in Blackpool for the day so booked it from 'Elegance' there. It's only costing us £117 which includes all ribbons and cake toppers as well. The shop does most things that people want and has won awards sp we're happy.

my cake is chocolate, and lemon sponge, so i will have around 40 pieces of each flavour.I really dont like fruit cake and so decided not to go for it

If you want a fairly simple cake, ask a baker to back you a plain sponge square cake @ 14 inch, and ask another to do the same but 12 inch. Say to each it is for a birthday.
Get them home the day before the wedding, put a ribbon around the bottom, or any other decorations you wont on them , and you could more than likely get them at half the price of a "wedding cake".

Just remember to stack them properly.

Great idea mcewan, if you want to save money its a great idea, another is if you want a fruit layer get one uniced from a supermarket and ice it yourself, often cheaper than buying all the fruit yourself!

mym, love that design, there's a shop I used that hires out that cake tin but haven't used it yet, also seen in done as a fairytale book, like at the beginning of Shrek! lol
