I'm thinking about my guest list and wondering whether I really need to invite 'plus ones'. I plan to if the couple are engaged/married or if we know both of them, but what about if my relative/friend's other half is unknown to me? I feel they would run the risk of feeling left out while being an added cost for our budget. Am I being realistic or heartless?

you are being realistic my friend got married and only invited partners that she new and they day/night was great no one cmplained, im thinking of doing the same as ive already got people saying can i bring my friend ect,,, so im going to say only long term partners allowed otherwise you will end up with lots of people you cant afford to cater for,

they may risk feeling left out if you didnt invite them. But this is always a major delima, If you are on a tight budget i would invite if they have been togethr for a long time but not if they havent as they could split up before the day. if you just explain you have left them out due to budget they will understand.

I have done this and there was only one family who had a problem with it and they have chose not to come now, which has meant I've been able to invite 6 friends. The bottom line is, that it is extremely expensive and people should feel priviliged that they have been invited and you can't please everyone.

I have been pondering the same thing. We can only have 43 guest max and plus ones could really mean that we end up with guests that we don't know and not being able to invite people that we do. I think you only have to invite a plus one if the person concerned doesn't really know any of the other guests.

nobody is getting plus ones on our day unless they are obviously married or been together forever. We have a couple of friends that we dont know the partners and dont wnat to allocate a seat and then them not be together. Plus it means we can get out of inviting 1 friends plus 1 that we really dont want there as the rest of his friends dont get a guest either.

Forget plus ones that you don't know. If you are having one you could always say they can come to the evening do where you don't really have to cater for them, but if you haven't met them why should you buy them dinner. Essentially thats what you are doing. The only exception to this I would have made would be if the friend in question didn't know anybody else, but family know other family so no plus ones at ours. Someone was cheeky enough to ask and we said no sorry but numbers are limited.

we only invited plus ones that were married/living together or if we knew them both well and it didn't cause any problems. We explained we were tight on space/numbers. As it happened a few ppl couldn't come so we invited a few plus ones later. It was easier than bumping someone from the evening to the day.x

I am inviting partners if they have been together a long time (ie over a year) and then guests who I know wont know anyone else will get a plus one. I have two potential guests who I really want there but they really wont know anyone else at the wedding, so feel I need to give them a plus one to encourage their attendance. But generally I wont be giving plus ones.

Basically Im doing it on a guest by guest basis.

If people who are coming on their own will know someone else there, then I'm not giving a plus one. If not, then I'm giving a plus one. Hx

I think the same - my H2B is inviting friends & there plus one - but its people i dont know and i have said to him i will feel a little uncortable with people there who are strangers to both me and him - i dont mind them inviting there wifes/gf's/fiance's but i really dont want just anyone there. i want my day to be special spending it with the people i love the most :) and really good friends!! xx

We're not having plus ones to the day, i don't want to meet someone for the first time on my wedding day when there are other people i'd rather have in their place.
We are saying that there are no plus ones during the day but if they have someone they'd like to join us in the evening then they're more than welcome to. X

I have lots of friends that dont know each other but they do have partners without being married or engaged so we have invited plus one's.
We wanted our friends to be there on the day with us but we dont want them to be uncomfortable not knowing anyone but us, so we thought inviting them all was the best way to do this.......the more the merrier i say :-) (150 day -250 evening)
luckily our budget allows for them so why not?

I've got a maximum of 60 to the day, our family comes to 56, if I invite any one who isn't married or living together I won't be able to have any friends there at all!
I know it sounds callous but I'm hoping some of the family will decide it's too far to come, so I can invite some more friends, we are going to send out invites depending on distance they have to travel (so 3 months before those furthest!) so that if they decide not to come those closest to home still can be invited without everyone else saying they got their invite ages ago!
